Interesting...I wonder why she doesn't wet and stretch paper, and tape it down, before painting. Probably it changes distribution of sizing in paper, so it doesn't take paint exactly as it would without pre-stretching. Probably wouldn't make a huge difference...but a technical artist would notice. Anybody have the answer?
The final touch - the stretching after painting, and that tip with the window glass - it quite a revelation to me. I always see people recomending stretching as a first step ( which I've tried and done, without getting the point of it because I'd get buckled paper anyway). Beautiful process to watch. Amazing technique and precision. Hats off! ❤
Wow, did you create your color charts that are first shown at about 6:13? Or are they something that can be obtained from the company? Or do you sell them? They're beautiful and would be so helpful and inspiring!!
yes colour charts are simple to do, if time consuming. Doing separate charts for each painting, if your flower is likely to die mid process, is very practical and is obviously only used for your own painting subject. In other words, no point buying someone elses colour charts.
Thank you for producing such a beautiful video. Art of this type is of the highest order and as a photographer, I am moved to witness the level of attention to detail and skill applied to creating such a work. It is very special to stand before artworks like these and now to have some insight into what goes into making them, I will have a deeper appreciation. Many thanks! David
Biological and medical illustration will always supercede photography with its exquisite sensitivity and detail...art meets science. That particular specimen of a Norfolk Island Pine is exquisite. If you're ever in San Francisco's Castro district there is a noble Norfolk within view of the Castro Muni Station if you're curious to see one in person
Please, does anybody know, what brush she uses at 8:45? I mean which brand and series brush is that? I'd really appreciate some feedback.Thank's in advance
What a wonderful video! Soothing effect of the voice over throughout the video is really good. How I wished to use the apparatus used by the artist so carefully. Great patience and lovely botanical painting. Thanks for sharing.
I am inspired by you to have a go at Botanical Art. Your entire process, from collection of specimen to taping work on glass is the most enlightening watercolour video I have ever seen. Thank you & please do more videos.
Finalmente alguém foi sincero sobre o tempo gasto para realizar um trabalho lindo como este. 200 horas...pelo que entendi. E também mostrou a técnica realizada de maneira honesta. Maravilhoso vídeo. Gratitude.
Perfect. I've always wanted to see one of these types of drawings done start to finish. I wish the artist could have shown how she keeps her specimen alive long enough to sketch it, though
Your illustrations are as beautiful as Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707-1788) illustrations. My father had some of them, and my sister and I inherited them.
Sadly, many people don’t realise they are doing it. When a ‘suggested’ video pops up in their feed, they tap Not Interested, are asked Why, and tap I Don’t Like The Video, which then applies a thumbs down. They do it thinking it will filter away similar videos, or those on the same topic, from their feed. It’s only a couple/three years since YT took away the Topic options, and this is the result - unwarranted thumbs down ☹️
Wonderful! Great video, thank you. I would be so worried at the stretching of the paper after all that work has been done. I have never seen it done "afterwards". I guess the watercolors don't bleed if you are putting water on the back. I just would be so scared to loose all that work. But it obviously works for you. I will have to try it. I never thought to use my window to "stretch" my paper on. Very interesting video. Hugs!
i am guessing she is working on very heavy paper, 300 gsm - so the thickness should preserve the painting from being disturbed by water layer lightly brushed on the reverse side. My guess anyway....
UN-Believable! Ohhh I wish. I can't imagine a more fun job-plants and painting...although I guess really I'd probably have more fun growing them which is what I'm more passionate about, but even to have one hundredth of her skill would make some nice little paintings for my walls. I'd love to paint new species and awarded plants and do commissions for people who wanted a painting of one of their plants and stuff.
I believe the way an artist paints really mirrors that artist's personality, I applaud this lady who has such a diligent and an elegant way of working, that sort of art requires considerable amount of patience and as someone who loves to paint with the moment rather than taking long times to plan out my piece I'm thoroughly impressed. I thrive to be more diligent the way I work and this has inspired me to work for that goal even more.
That is a very nice comment. I am a botanical illustrator and paint in a very detailed way. I have received comments over the years that I should “loosen up”. as if this style of painting is somehow undesirable. Every one has their own style and what is tight for them.
always be excited....i like you and greetings friends, i'm from indonesia... i like the videos you show, i feel entertained watching it, i pray, may you live long and stay healthy always, so that you stay healthy make new videos,,, and because I have many shortcomings, I ask for your support and guidance my friend... I hope for your guidance my friend.
Amazing and beautiful. I so wished I had what it takes to do something like this. Maybe not on such a grand size, but something that represents our Southeast Deserts in Arizona, USA. Thank you for your time and talent.
I understand almost all that you have said the part I don’t understand is wetting the paper to stretch it . If you generously wet the back doesn’t it make the paint on the front bleed.
So a painting of this size and complexity requires at least 200 hours of work, that's 25 days of 8 hours everyday, assuming she works non-stop through all weekends. Assuming also that she charges $35 per hour in Australia, that's $7,000 for her time, plus an extra amount for the materials, transport and misc costs. She loves the job so that's priceless.
Most of the very good miniaturists working in great detail I have seen (contemporary and throughout history) are women. It has to do with having a very analytical mind. So much for the myth of the male analytical mind.
I think your work is exceptional and this video truly inspirational. I am also a botanical artist, but not in your league. I was in Sydney for a few days earlier this year and spent some time in the Royal Botanic Gardens. I may even have seen the very Norfolk Pine from which you collected your specimen. I wish I could have seen your work in person rather than mediated by video. Perhaps next time. Thank you so much for making and posting this video.

You are the "First" - Botanical Artist, that has a huge name in this Artistry!!! Yours is the "accolade" of Botanical Art!!!
Stunning, every intricate tiny detail, it's alive with the essence of the plant. Pulls together into a strident, powerful tribute. Artistic genius and excellent. Perfect. Thank you for this beauty and inspiration 🙏🏼
Kolinsky sable may have USED to be the best. But there are many brands now that mimic it almost exactly without innocent animals having their fur ripped off of them ^_^ Rosemary and Co has a great synthetic line.
yes Rosemary and Co in England has a great reputation among fine artists. I have their catalogue: nothing like handmade brushes... if you can afford them! maybe one day....
@@pipfox7834 hello! I forgot about this comment lol it was 8 months ago. Some of the rosemary brushes are super affordable! Like $5 to $8 each and if you are low on funds I recommend just buying 3 of them. A size 4, 6 and 8 round. You can do sooooo much with just those 3 brushes. The Red Dot pointed rounds start at just $2
Why do you not stretch the paper first? You can stretch it on the glass first just as you did here. Once stretched, which is soooo much easier on glass as you demonstrated here, you can then start on your botanical. You can do a lot of background things while the paper is being wet stretched. Beautiful painting! 200 hours😱
This 13 minute video taught me a lot of techniques rather than the 1hr ones available online.

This is seriously fascinating!
What a masterpiece! Thank you for sharing this beautiful art.
Her nice voice is an invitation to contemplate her wonderful illustrations. I love it.
This was so mesmerizing to watch, she is a master artist. Incredible work!

Beautiful. Just makes me cry because of its beauty. Just beautiful.
This is the magic that attracts me to watercolor
Fantastic.
Brilliant.
Images of God, echoing divine creation in two dimensions.

She has definitely made that - and you can make one too! Plenty of youtube clips of how to pick a colour palette and paint a colour chart

Amazing. Love how she stretched her piece at the end.

Beautiful! I'd love to be able to paint in such detail. Great skill!
Beautiful work, and thank you for sharing your talent with us.
I can't get "enough" of the knowledge this woman offers to the Botanical World! I have watched this episode for somewhat like 6 to 8 times now!
I love so much this kind of illustrations
Interesting! She stretches it after she's painting it.
SMASHING !! ....You are absolutely the best watercolor artist that I've ever seen !! There just isn't words grand enough to describe your talent.

Absolutely beautiful. Very inspiring.
good film, needs editing. A better opening scene would be the scene with the mature Norfolk Pine, then to the studio. Thanks for uploading
Ohhh..so brilliant painting... superb 👍
The most scientific, accurate and superbly detailed botanical artwork what I've ever seen. Just amazing.
Very informative, thank you for sharing :)
Wow! Really amazing
You are so patient and extremely talented 👏👏👏

You remind me of my "sister" - Aurora! She also is a dedicated woman!
literally my dream job tbh, but with herbal plants in the pacific northwest

I admire you.

Amazing art work and craftsmanship! What a beautiful way to appreciate nature and help preserving it (on paper and hopefully also in the field).
So wonderful to watch your amazing artistic talent and allowing us to enjoy the intricate details of the Norfolk pine and cone…..thankyou from Pauline
your painting is absolutely stunning and you are inspiring!

Awesome! So much helpful info
Very informative video. Thanks for sharing. Whole bundle of talent Heidi Willis, Susan H and many more are you all having a club in Australia :) ?
There's so much care and work put into it. I'm overwhelmed just trying to think about taking on even a tenth of the work.
It’s a labor of love.
Hermoso!
Qué líquido aplica en parte trasera de la hoja al acabar ? Es agua?
oh wow.. where can i buy one of these?

Did she say she cuts it from the glass after its stretch? Oh I understand she means trim from the paper. 😓
where can i find her paint pallete?
This was very helpful. All my watercolor experience is in portraits but I've really been wanting to start botanical art.
Beautiful! Instagram: @aspiranteabiologa

i think she said she stretched it twice, so once before she started and again when she finished the painting.
@@pipfox7834 I'll have to go back and watch the video again. I don't remember that, but I probably missed it. Thank you for your help. 🙂
