STORMING THE BASTILLE!

  • Back with some more BITFA and today we're doing the most iconic battle during the French Revolution of 1789. I should have assigned a Guard regiment in blue uniforms to defend the Fort instead of the regular white/grey line infantry for realism purposes, but whatever. I hope you all enjoy this battle! I really want to make more pre-Napoleonic battles and perhaps the elimination of the Swiss Guard in 1792, that could also be really cool. Let me know what you want to see! Ciao.

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
    When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
    Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
    Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
    When tomorrow comes!
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
    The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
    When tomorrow comes!
i know its not the same revolution but it fits dosent it?

There weren't many prisoners in the Bastille simply because there weren't many there at that time. One of the prisoners called out to the people outside and said they were executing prisoners even though they weren't, which made them storm the place. So basically a guy lied, got the place stormed because of it, and that kicked off the revolution.

Dos g Have you heard of these people known as Germans? They have soldiers that have been the envy throughout time. Not to say the French are bad by any regards, the previous is merely a joke at there expense, but Germany has produced a breed of soldier so great that nearly every other army has tried to copy them at one time or another. This of course has gone back and forth with France since the preconception of both countries. I'm not trying to play them up too much but when the British hire your mercenaries and treat them better than their own men in some regards. You might have some good soldiers.

I would actually play the fuck out of a MoW game based around the Napoleonic Era (perhaps Green Jackets?) with cavalry, and line infantry. With missions like surviving the Indian Mutiny with limited ammo, and deciding where to stockpile it, place cannons and hold the line against massed armies etc. or the farmhouse at Waterloo.
This looks like a lot of fun, is there a mod download for these types of maps?

The mod can be found on both Mowas2 and Call to arms, its called BITFA, its a huge mod, but sadly the Napoleonic factions just aren't very historically accurate in terms on models, but overall its good indepth mod. Very soon Diplex will upload a huge Waterloo battle video including both farmhouses : D

To start off with, in French history "La Prise de la Bastille" is an event that occurred on the 14th July 1789 in the East of Paris consisting off the people of Paris and the French Royal Army both storming the strategic prison of La Bastille which represented the French Royalty. Taking this prison would show the weakness of Louis XVI's power but unlike a lot of films and games indicate THERE NEVER WAS ANY CONFLICT OR CASUALTIES since the French Army helped the Revolutionnaires by opening the gate of la Bastille.... The famous painting by Jean-Pierre Houël representing canon fire coming from La Bastille didn't represent an attack but a sign that la Bastille had been taken. After the taking of la Bastille the Revolutionnary forces looted all of it's armoury from guns and gunpowder and blew down la Bastille leaving it to dust. Today in Paris, la Place de la Bastille shows the outline of big spheres which represent where the towers once stood.

I hope they would make 18th or 19th century Men of War game. Mods are not good enough because they don't have proper unit control or melee combat, both of which were very important before invention of machine guns. During Napoleonic wars, you could make succesful melee charge without suffering any losses. And line tactics and massed units were used because they worked better. They all did have skirmishers who fought like more modern soldiers, but those were not nearly effective enough.

  • @RicardoRs1990

Ok, first and foremost, prease don't take the following comment as criticism, it's just the real story of the invasion of the Bastille, more precisely, the short version of it.
As usual, loved the video, it was a pretty epic firefight, as expected!
So, the takeover of the Bastille was really not that heated. Early in the morning the revolutionaries stormed the Hôtel des Invalides (a military hospital) with the intel that the facility held something in between 29.000 to 32.000 muskets. The commander of the hospital believed that it would be prudent not to keep the shot and gunpowder together with the muskets stockpile, so he had it moved to the Bastille earlier that day, so the attack on the Bastille was actually a follow-up to the storming of the Hôtel des Invalides.
As to the invasion itself, the outer coutyard of the fort was turned into a public space, so the walls around it where no longer occupied, and since the place had only 7 prisioners it was run by a skeleton crew, slightly over 80 defenders, of wich many where wounded veterans unfit for duty. The revolutionaries, wich numbered slightly under 1.000, tried to negotiate, but as the negociations dragged on the crowd became impatient and stormed the outer courtyard, and by climbing on nearby buildings, managed to climb the prision walls and destroy the chains holding the drawnbridge, the firefight actually began as they stormed the first inner courtyard and it lasted from 1:30PM to 5:30PM, when the commander of the prision surrendered to the revolutionaries.
After his surrender he was lynched all the way to the Hôtel des Invalies and there he was killed, decapitated and had his head put on a stake and paraded across town.

Nice video Diplex but I have to say that there are 2 historical inaccuracies: • La Marseillaise in the background which wasn’t invented yet
    • the French flag that we know today wasn’t invented at the time.
But I guess you already knew that and don’t really care as you just want to have fun so whatever.
    Anyway nice video Diplex

Heh, your storming of the Bastille is much more gruesome and larger in scale than in RL... I believe in reality there was just about a few dozen men at most that actually defended the Bastille, afterall it was used as a Prison for some smaller offenders, for example the Marquis de Sade.
I believe if I recall correctly the Storming of the Bastille went fairly quick and none of the garrison survived, getting butchered by the Mob who then looted all the weapons, money and ammunitions that they could get their hands on.

The reason there were so few prisoners in the Bastille is that by the time of the revolution it was mainly used as a temporary lockup by the city police with only a few longer term prisoners to important to be sent to places like Toulon. It's one of the reasons they had room to store the gunpowder there is that there were only an average of around 20 prisoners a year.

There were not many prisoners because it was a state prison where the king would lock up opponents to his absolute power who were part of the aristocracy or the bourgeoisie. So prisons conditions were pretty good but it was a symbol of royal power
