  • Obtaining cultures and understanding the culture and sensitivity reports are essential when a person is suspected of having a bacterial or fungal infection. Gram staining the micro-organism and finding out if the bacteria is Gram-positive or Gram-negative can rapidly aid medical professionals in determining the proper course of treatment. Cultures and antibiotic susceptibility testing can help clinicians identify the offending organism and tailor an effective antibiotic regimen. Join me this week as I discuss the essentials of understanding and interpreting culture and sensitivity reports. #lifewithavent #infections #gramstaining

Thank you so much. I have been trying to understand CNS reports compared to Wound Sequencing-PCR. This information was very detailed and easy to understand.

This was really interesting! Just my opinion, but I’d enjoy more videos like this that dig into biology and physiology.

Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it. I would do more videos like this, but they do not do well on my channel. I created this video specifically for a few people who have had questions about how to interpret culture reports.

Do you know by chance if Hospitals are doing MCI with Gram Stanining with various medical conditions? Unfortunately Surgeons and Medical Team are not allowing this to happen where the person is even getting cultures done to see if any infections has grown since the last time they were in the Hosptial. Hospitals are not Going over lab work from past surgeries that shows any fungus which is a vey serious infection to the person who has a serious medical conditions. Doctors are not going over any medical records of the person who has a serious fungus infections from a past surgery. No Follow up appointments with Surgeons and Medical Team do not even do testing on the urine and sputum to see if any infection would happen to cause a relapse. Thank You So Very Much for your incrediable knowledge on this video.

Hello. Doctors only run cultures if there is a suspicion of an infection. They do not run cultures for routine surveillance. In the absence of a possible infection, running a culture may only show contamination and false positive results. This may lead to treating a non-existent infection. I am sorry there were no follow-ups. However, once an infection is treated, usually no additional testing is done.
(For reference, I get frequent infections. However, in the absence of infection symptoms, my sputum (or urine or blood) is not tested. Once I have been discharged home from the hospital and have recovered from the infection, no follow-up is done.)

Thank you for your comment. Do you mean the culture and sensitivity reports can be completed by robots? If so, yes, that is true. They are testing ways to automate the system. I did not include it in the video as I thought it was beyond the scope of the material presented.
