1. Pikoach Nefesh (to save a life), one can break Shabbos. 2. Shabbos ends when 3 stars come out. Not sunset. ;) Shabbat Shalom PS...yes yes, we suspend disbelief here. :)
I can't find a clip of one of the best scenes from the movie, on RUclips... where you find out why the rabbi is upset... it's not because he killed a man, but because he cared about a book more than his friend's life. Even that book. Personally, I think God would appreciate his anguish.
One of my all time favorite movies. I first saw it on HBO way back then probably 1980 at a relatives place. Some years ago I bought the DVD. I will watch it again some day. It shows the antisemitism and disrespect of the Jew ✡️ but also the kindness at the same time, overall a really fun movie to watch.
For much of its history, the Jewish religion was administered by priests, a class of Jewish citizens who were given social, economic, and political power far beyond that of just performing the sacred rites of the people. They were second in power only to the kings;[2] when the Romans took over, it was the priestly class that they were most worried about. Abraham is considered the first Jewish priest, though the line formally began with his great-grandson, Levi. Of course, no women were allowed to be priests 4,000 years ago.
If you were to read the Torah, then you would say that Abraham was the first Hebrew, and the first of three forefathers. His son was Isaac, and his grandson was Jacob, the third forefather, whose name was also Israel (Yisrael in the Hebrew pronunciation). Israel, son of Isaac, had twelve sons, one of whom was Levi. It was only hundreds of years later, when the Israelites, or "Sons of Israel," left Egypt, that a descendant of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Israel, i became the first high priest, that is, his function was to conduct rituals in the Tabernacle. Aaron, older brother of Moses, descendant of Levi, was the first high priest, in Hebrew, a Cohen. Through the generations, Jewish families remember their designations as a Cohen, Levi, or Israelite. In day-to-day-life there is no significance for these names, but it is a tradition that the Cohens do say a special blessing over the congregation on the Sabbath and holidays.
Does every son "go into the family business"? And the adopted son? A branch may be broken off, and another branch grafted in. The Lord Jesus is sometimes called The Branch, or The Vine. Fruit is born towards the end of a branch rather than at the root. A man's seed is his child. "If you were a tree, what kind of a tree would you be?" - Barbara Walters.
I imagine you are joking, but....the majority of Jews now live in Israel. Do you imagine that we are drafted into tthe army 36 month and risk our lives for MONEY? In my days 1971-1974 we got enough money for 30 packs of cigarettes a month. My son got a about $200 a month and no, we didn't get afterwards free medical, college education, etc. Do the Jews who work the factories here loe money? Do the bank tellers, post office tellers, postman love money. Do YOU NOT love money? We tend to be more idealistic here in Israel, or if not, we'd be in America winning it from the gentiles?
Of course ! And not all jews were money lenders or representatives of the village or estate Duke. many worked in Jewish industry such as scribes of Torah scrolls, mezzuza, tefilin. Many learned Torah and had jobs such as water carriers, hide tanners, craftsmen, physicians, etc.
You are right and wrong - there is something in Judaism called "Pikuach Nefesh" - If someone's life is in danger you can override any restriction to save him/her - but that's not case here. His life was not in Immediate danger (he wasn't drowning or deadly wounded).
I have heard it as "when the sun hides behind the Earth," which was technically the mountain was Earth. Then again I heard it from a Rabbi in a village not far from my host's home.
Movies rarely show Jewish life accurately and this one's no exception. Those of us who know better just roll our eyes and say "I wish they'd gotten a technical advisor". At least it's funny and not anti-Semitic.
Shabas is not a suicide pact. In a life and death situation you can break the rule. Also Shabas ends an hour after sundown. The oxymoronic cult jews for Jesus wouldn't know that.
Malachi 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. Matthew 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Luke 13:15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?
Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford are Classic, and Wilder is probably the only white man in America's history who could do⚫face(Silver Streak)and get away with it😮!!!
Matthew 25:3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Jude 1:15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. Revelation 6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. To be ignorant is to be foolish the way God Almighty Himself sees it. Ignorant is what the Jewish Hebrew man Saul of Tarsus was like before he was converted by Jesus Christ the Son of God Himself back in the book of Acts.
Luke Chapter 13 14And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. 15The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? 16And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? 17And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
God does not respect persons, but He loves them who love Him. It is not genetic heritage that commends a man to Him, or condemns a man before Him, but his behaviour. It is mere correlation that many Jews are religiously observant, keep the law of Moses, and that many gentiles do not keep the law of Moses, choosing not to be Jews. They are Christians, who having received of His Spirit, walk not after the flesh, and they are Jews who keep the law of Moses. And some, do both - for example, they eat that which is kosher, without lusting after it. Love versus lust of the flesh - can you really eat a hot dog without lust being present? "Soo good". Can you eat that which tastes good, but lust not? Can you hear pleasant music without dancing? But whether one is able to interpret Scripture correctly or not, one should not question another's love for The Word of God, assuming they recognize it as such. "Umm, that's a copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.." You need both Truth and Love. .. the right answer is.. x=8 ? Does everybody desire what he needs? It is not wise to give holy things to dogs. .. pigs, however, they will eat anything, it seems. You have to wait until there’s three stars visible in the sky anyway.
As if a person should learn halacha from Hollywood!
Indiana Jones and the Rabbi Willy Wonka

The movie is worth seeing again for that scene as well. Thanks for the memory!

@@UsIsr Aaron, brother of Moses, was the first High Priest.
@Al Mendelsohn In Aharon's lifetime, the only other priests were his own sons, and they were more like assistants.
Harrison Ford is Jewish too.

Also, the Sabbath doesn't end at sundown. It never did and it never will. It's amazing how that myth stays with us so strongly.
I'm leaving, who is asking u to stay? Funny
