All Alone in the Eastern Sierra

  • Winter hiking in the Eastern Sierra is a hiker's paradise! On a chilly winter morning in Bishop driving down Highway 395 we decided to take the Kearsarge Pass trail up to the stunningly beautiful Matlock Lake. With a high wind advisory and a fresh snowfall, the trail was completely deserted, making it one magical winter hike.
    Note - The Eastern Sierra got a MASSIVE dump of fresh snowfall the evening/days after we did this hike, so attempting this same trail with current conditions is not advised and may not be possible with seasonal road closures.

    Yay - more Eastern Sierra hiking :-) This trail was one of the first I did many years back. If I recall it was June after a huge snow year so the trail was covered shortly after the Onion Valley trailhead. I probably didn't make it very far before losing the trail and post-holing to frustration. I made it back there that fall and hiked up to the Pass. The view into Kings Canyon was _amazing_ and I've been chasing the feeling ever since. Your video is a quick reminder I need to get back there sooner rather than later. That view of Matlock Lake - breathtaking. Thanks for brightening my Thursday :)

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад +1

      That's a great memory, Tom! And a good reminder of what we're going to be getting into soon now that even more snow has fallen. Adam loathes post-holing but loves the adventure and solitude of breaking the trail, so we always have a love-hate relationship with being the first ones out after a big snow. And it's never a bad idea to get back into the Sierra -- we're so freaking lucky to live close to it! ❤️

You can if you want. Up Carillion Creek at Whitney is tough haul but if you go to the top epic view of iceberg lake and Whitney. Lone Pine creek is route to ice berg. Carillon is sweet if you push up to top. You can go higher than crest. Stay right out of creek initially. Very tough with pack. Gear. Easy is Kearsarge. Mono behind Tom's Cabin. But Mono's road is long way back and over 7400 feet. Independence is best winter area/Lone Pine. Roads right up to THs to walk on. High passes. Biggest mountains.

      This is fantastic info as always, Dan -- you're like a Sierra encyclopedia! ❤️

    They finally picked a trail that I can do 😅

      Haha yes!! This trail is totally doable, and soooo beautiful. Highly recommend it (though after the most recent snowfall you might want snow shoes!). ❤

      Mono pass is as easy. But up to Matlock is easier. Just meander. Not sure where sign is but it's just past the huge rock Adam is on uptrail to left. The beach where Elise is first is first stop. You can walk up to other lakes. Takes 3 hours to wander entire area. University is not a scramble. Gould is. Choose wisely.

    How long did it take to hike? I would like to try it in February before skiing in Mammoth. When did you go? Website says "The road is usually open from May to November, depending on snow conditions".

      We did it two weeks ago, Carol, right before the first really big snow. So maybe the road is already closed, but hopefully not because wow, what a hike! We've heard that it can be a really great show shoe adventure as well. The hiking part didn't take long, under four hours total and that's with a LOT of filming and snack breaks. Probably plan on 2-3 hours of hiking time, depending how fast you normally hike. ❤️

    Frozen lakes, snowy trails and Elise with bare arms? How do you do it? Are you impervious to the cold?

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  Год назад

      Haha it's all in the layers, Maurice! When we're in the sun and hiking up hill I de-layer so I don't get sweaty, but then as soon as we stop, or the sun goes behind the clouds, or we start hiking downhill, I add layers immediately. The Sierra is crazy like that -- sometimes you're adding or subtracting a layer about every 10 minutes!

    Are those the lakes that house the high Sierra golden trout??

      Yes! This is right up above Independence, very near the lake that is actually named "Golden Trout Lake." ❤️

      Haha! I brought my swimsuit but the wind chill was just too fierce to justify hiking all the way back to the car as a frozen popsicle. One day I will be brave enough. Would you have gone in?!
