+anotherone10 Porsche should have used a turbo V4 like the one in the 919 Hybrid LMP endurance racecar. That would have made it sound unique and special and it would have had racing pedegree.
The way the Porsche logo is done on the back is gorgeous. Really like this car. Sad to see the 6's go but such is the cost of continued progress in the face of stricter and stricter emissions requirements.
looks good.....n being a Porsche, wud drive like no other....however what surprises me is the engine note inspite of being Turbocharged, it sounds rather good
+N1GHT5 It was (because of the VW Beetle). But shortly afterwards, the Porsche 912 (4 cylinder engine) did not sell well compared to the original 911. More cylinders were and are superior. And even if I had the money, I could not bring myself to spend so much money on just 4 cylinders and a bit of a turbo...
+N1GHT5 You're not wrong, but the flat-six is the Porsche engine that has mattered most throughout its history. It is integral to the 911. I don't have strong feelings about it in the Boxster though. Whatever works for the car.
+X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X Actually in the earlier years of the 911/912 series, the 912 significantly outsold the 911 from 1965 to 1967, which then after that the 912 became more expensive for Porsche to build, decreasing interest in the 912. In response to this, Porsche ceased production of the 912 in 1969 and gave way to the new 914 in 1970, only for it to cease production in 1976 & for a short time in the U.S. market be replaced by the 912E (a '76 911S with the 914 2.0L flat-four engine) before then being replaced by the 924 in 1977, and that ends the story of the 912.
+Sabroe Huracan natural aspirated V10 sounds and is beast. Havent heard the V12 of the Aventador in real life yet but I heard it was beast too and great performance.
+Malc180s Hey sure! That's definitely a fun way to identify yourself as an uneducated tosser who gives a crap about other languages and brand names so he can ramble on with his brainless mates while he dreams of owning a proper car. Now go on and be a good Geordie and hop in your "Foxhole Astra" will ya? Cheers mate...
+Roy Robson Tell me, do you pronounce the capitol of France as Paris or Pari, with a silent S? There are many words we all pronounce DIFFERENTLY. Unless you are perfect, which is highly unlikely... don't correct other people.
Honestly this is great. Most people won't track this & it'll be a fun car around town. The Miata is a 4 banger & ppl rave about it. I think Porsche is making a smart move here & I trust they'll make this thing just as fun if not more than the previous gen.
Loved my 3.2 boxster S. Super throttle response and sound. The taster here suggest sounds best on the overrun! Will be a cracking drive, like to see it against the Focus RS 2.3 turbo 345bhp? Which will be the most playful?
It wouldn't hurt to smile a little, Hunter! You're doing great, just relax. You want people to watch YOUR videos just as much as the cars you're reviewing.
Ah it sounds ok, just stick a better exhaust on it. I just ordered a Cayman. Apparently they all sound better in the flesh and they're much much faster than anything in the same bracket 40-50k
4:00 - I know it would needlessly add weight but those brakes need to be larger for the sake of the looks of the car. It reminds me of the beloved Volvo 850Rs that had 18" rims and some of the smallest rear discs you could imagine.
At 1:38, he says Porsche decided to keep the side scoops "despite the fact that the motor is turbocharged". I would have thought they'd be there ESPECIALLY if it were turbocharged.
To think a clean, 2900lbs, 300-325HP, flat 6, 6-speed, 996 can be had for $17-25k... I think the value on those will soon climb as well as they are fantastic cars once sorted and the sound is on the money.
as a 986 2.7 owner i see this car has come a long way. i don't think the 4cyl sound is too bad, i like subarus and the toyota 86 though so i might be a bit forgiving about that. this is a great car, the buildquality is outstanding at that pricepoint. the base car is 46.000€ less than a base 911, but i don't think i feels like being that much cheaper.
I'm actually surprised of how good this little 4 banger sounds. Not as impressive as the old flat 6, but doesn't sound too much like a basic Golf. It kinda suits the philosophy of the car. The read end looks stunning too, even tho the front is a little boring... Can't wait to see how this performs against previous Boxster S.
Flat 4 sounds fantastic, now if only they had reduced the overall proportions of the car down to the around the same size as the original Boxster from 1997 and had the weight down to around ~1200 kilos, this car would be such a joy to drive!.
Im having the worst time deciding what car to get the choice is between the cayman or the boxter and I dont know what color to get either. The question is eating at my soul and I have only a week to decide before I place my order for one.
This car is gorgeous. Great video and b-roll. The presenting is a tiny bit dull but perfectly understandable. The noise this car makes leaves a bit left to be desired but most 4-cylinder engines don't sound that exciting.
Sounds sporty and deep, nice popping and crackling sounds by throttle lift off too! (although it is probable fake..) Nothing wrong with a 4-banger, that's how Porsche started after all (356, 550 Spyder, 912, 914 etc.) Love it! :-)
The Boxster/Cayman has always been about sublime handling balance for the price and I'm sure that's improved even further here. It's a shame about the 4cyl engines, but Porsche had to do something- aside from emissions, too many 911 buyers were stepping down
Any hot hatch on the market sounds better. I was hopping the sound would be more boxer than that. Sounds almost like an ordinary in line 4. Hope to see a flatsix in some hot version.
+marsmunky orky Nope! Porsche won't succumb to the inefficiencies of unequal length headers for some rumble. Even Subaru is going towards equal length headers. Say goodbye to boxer rumble.
"They managed to keep the side intakes even though it's now turbo charged" - well, surely you need them even more now in order to feed the side mounted intercoolers.
+Mubble Mann i was confused by that line too. It is litterally how the engine gets air into the combustion chamber. It wouldnt function without them lol.
I like this design a little bit better than the 991 but I just wish they had a turboed flat 6 version. If they made a 718 Boxter GT3, hell ya I'd buy it
I didn't get what he said. Because it's now turbocharged, Porsche could have removed the side air intakes? And those brake discs though... they look very tiny and out of proportions to the massive wheels!
I'm a potential owner but I have to say the sound or lack of could be the deciding factor. It sounds awful in every video I've seen. The base model doesn't come with the PSE option either.
Yes they're different cars with different talents, but 0-62 on the 911 is 4.6 while the 911 S is 4.3. 0-62 is not everything but usually quite a significant measure of a sports car's talents.
Faris Ali Look at Nürburgring times - these “baby” Porsche’s beat Ferrari’s, Audi R8 and the beloved 911 GR3 RS because of sublime handling paired with a stonking engine!
For a four pot it doesn't sound too bad, I like the boxer rumble. But its no match for the flat 6.
Sti and Eco sound "not so bad" for a four-pot. This though, it sounds numb and dumb. Crap
+anotherone10 Porsche should have used a turbo V4 like the one in the 919 Hybrid LMP endurance racecar. That would have made it sound unique and special and it would have had racing pedegree.
+jfv65 Only problem with that is that the Boxster name is derived from the fact that the car is a roadster & has a boxer engine layout.
+jfv65 a V4? it's been like 50 years since a cars had a V4
+jfv65 V4's are complicated and aren't used in cars anymore. Wouldn't make sense in this car...
The way the Porsche logo is done on the back is gorgeous. Really like this car. Sad to see the 6's go but such is the cost of continued progress in the face of stricter and stricter emissions requirements.

WOW! Subaru finally made a proper sports car!
+William Seroyer I don't get your joke
Wroxster
+William Seroyer Subaru Coxster Spyder STI
+alex b subaru Subaru have always been making a boxer 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine since the 90s
+Patthon Sirilim I sold mine Subaru wrc Spider in 80s
I actually love the look and sound of it. Nice work Porsche. Moving with the times and it hits 100 in 4 seconds! Can't complain.
It's funny how people think this is not the proper motor for Porsche.
Flat-4 was THE first Porsche engine!
+N1GHT5 It was (because of the VW Beetle). But shortly afterwards, the Porsche 912 (4 cylinder engine) did not sell well compared to the original 911. More cylinders were and are superior.

Name of the song?
That is one gorgeous Porsche and the color is so stunning.
It sounds OK. Is the weight balance any better?
All I can say is that I'm very happy that I have the previous generation.
Great video as always!
That car is jaw-dropingly gorgeous.
what song is playing on this video???
First they turbo the base 911 and now this... Guess i won't be dreaming of a Porsche anymore.
+Sabroe what choice do you have - all manufacturers are doing the same...
+Sabroe 10 years later you might be saying first they make the engines smaller(1.5 Litre) and they add electric motor what is this Tesla or Porsche
Buy a Ducati ;)
+Sabroe Huracan natural aspirated V10 sounds and is beast. Havent heard the V12 of the Aventador in real life yet but I heard it was beast too and great performance.
Graham Tricker Yeah you're right, and it sucks. It's taking the charm away from cars.
So what's the mpg now? That's the whole point of the engine change isn't it (more Eco friendly) but I failed to see it mentioned at all.
What's the song in the beginning?

it is much better fuel consumption with much more torque and power. Good job...

Worst sounding boxster.
Such a fucking shame.
Nothing a good exhaust can't fix.

Beauty = Perfection with a little unavoidable Drawback.
that was 4.09 seconds 0-100kmh pretty fast!
Lots of great improvements! However, I'm sure the once used to be "affordabe" Boxter now commands $90k optioned out.
How does it sound? Strange, and lackluster. Much like the guy in this video.
I thought this was an april fools joke.
it's the 80s all over again 2.0 liter turbos what a devolution . i'd much prefer to see the rise of electric sports cars with 1000miles range.
Can't wait for them to put te 2.5 turbo in the Cayman.

Very pretty car.
"...and there is also an optional sports exhaust which you can hear now..."
Sorry, did I miss something?
I like the lines and the colour, looks lively just sitting there. Sort of car that begs to be driven and enjoyed. I'd stick with the manual.
I actually kinda like the noise...
looks decent enough
CAR THROTTLE: the 718 boxster S is faster than the BMW M4, Audi R8 V10, and Ferrari 599 GTB around Nurburgring
Sounds artificial like all the 4 Zylinder Turbos
Anyone with manual naturally aspirated Porsches, hang onto them !
Hopefully Porsche keeps the flat 6 in GTS.
