One of the best things about all of Matt's videos, they are clearly marked with stuff like "FULL DISCLOSURE: Porsche flew me to Portugal, fed me, and put me in the Intercontinental Hotel Estoril for this review." Kudos to that Matt, that's pretty cool. Also Cool Video.
+luimarco How bout a video on Blaha's newly discovered white supremacist past, reptilian lies etc.? guaranteed to drive some traffic to your channel kpsutbi
The first thing that comes to mind is that this is the first iteration of the 718. At the end of it's lifetime it will be even more bonkers fast. Think about it - this is as fast or faster than 911s of ONE generation ago. 4 cylinder or not, this is a serious sports car. Great review Matt.
I think Porsche got exactly the video they hoped for from you. Good choice on flying you out there. They knew you wouldn't be overly nostalgic about the 6-cylinder and judge the turbo-4 for what it is and give the car an honest review.
+Ethan Gee we just love to walk long distances on foot under the sun no really, we do. I can't understand why everyone does it, its almost as if people don't have jobs that wear down their legs to moosh
did you shoot any one takes on some of the local modified cars from lisbon or was it just the boxters? Hope ypu enjoyed your stay, greetings from Lisbon.
+André Ameixas That would be cool, but the logistics of it would mean Matt would have to arrange hotel, a rental and then have the people take their cars to him. It's not as simple as it is in the states
I'm so glad you aren't focusing on how it isn't a flat-six. Great job not being biased, and actually having fun with it! So many other people are acting like that flat-four is the work of satan or something. Awesome one-take, that thing looks seriously rapid!
I bought the 718 Cayman S PDK. The car is amazing--acceleration, handling, hill-climbing authority, sound--super car performance for $100,000 with all of the sport gear, the lowered chassis, 20" wheels, etc. It's unflappable. The car runs a 3.6 second 0-60 (Car & Driver testing) and hits 186 mph (Automobile Mag-Autobahn run). Sorry 911 enthusiasts, but its the best new car to buy for the quintessential Porsche experience. It's also faster than the 911, 911 GTS and ties the 911 S in acceleration metrics. It is probably one of the best handling cars in the world. I give it a strong buy recommendation.
Sounds really good actually, especially for a turbo 4 banger. But that said, I'm a sucker for WRX/STI exhaust notes, so I'm biased. Could be way worse all things considered.
matt, you all were totally on track yesterday on your podcast. I eat my morning breakfast every morning at 7 to your one takes. IT IS like my morning show. My day feel incomplete without it! lol. thanks for the great content!
thanks for getting out and giving it a blast so i can hear the engine in action... verdict sounds much better than I expected, still cant shake the lack of 6 feeling though
Matt, Oh yeah, So happy to see you invited to a Porsche Launch event. This is the best review I have seen so far of the new 718 ! It looks awesome, handles awesome and sounds.... well, it sounds ok for a Posche if I am honest. I do feel better about the sound after watching and hearing it on your one take. In some other vids I wanted to cry after hearing it. As a Porsche enthusiast I love most things porsche does and I am a loyal customer for life. I like to see Porsche being successful, making awesome new cars and winning races. With that said, I do feel bitter sweet about some of the "progress". I love what they are doing with the new bodies and interiors, but the Character of Porsche engines has changed a LOT with the introduction of a mostly turbocharged line up in all of their cars. I guess the air-cooled guys said the same about changing to the water-cooled motors! There is something to be admired and said about the new "turbo torque", no doubt about it and it's awesome to have the pull down low, but I will miss the screaming wail of Porsche's Past. Makes me a little sad because now my purchasing options for the newer cars is limited. I am not sure if I want to switch from screaming naturally aspirated flat 6s to turbo engines just yet.. I guess that's just me getting old and set in my ways, but thank God there are still plenty of naturally aspirated used Porsches to buy in the future, so that is still a good thing. Onward and faster is the name of the game. Go Porsche!
I drive a 981 GTS. I am happy to have the 6-cylinders. I don't need the extra power, it's more that enjoy the machine while driving. The sound of the 6-cylinder is "wow". And now I can say "it still has the 6-cylinders"... like the air-cooled aficionados don't like the water-cooled machines :-) Turbos and 4-cylinders are the present and future. So I keep my car.
+Pedro Costa i'm from france and i can vouch for roads in spain. i was driving up in the hills in spain and when i crossed the spain/france border, the road turned into shit. spain got the best roads
Just got the 718 S Boxster. It's a cruise missile with leather seats and four wheels. Replaced my beloved 2008 Cayman 2.7. Certainly a different sound....but a totally different class of performance. Better ride. And hard to believe, but better handling and steering too. The interior gets an A. The electronics a solid B (maybe an A once I figure all the crap out).
Sounds VERY close to an STI... Awesome car though, but I'd have to agree with some other people here in the comments. Used 911 over a new Boxter any day of the week. That being said i've only driven a couple 997's and a 964 Turbo, never a Boxter.
For me it's the other way around, but i never drove a 911, only a boxster. But even before that drive, I liked the boxster more, in fact it's my favorite car, so I'm looking forward to buy one in the future.
Very rarely do I get the impression that someone actually loves the car that they're reviewing. That is exactly what comes across to me in this review. Great job Matt!
+TheSmokingTire Hi Matt, I'm from Portugal. I've been following your channel because I love cars and alslo because your videos about cars are so well done that makes me watch them over and over again. I'm not from Lisbon, I'm from the north, so I didn't met you personaly, but just the fact that you were invited by Porsche to 'reveal' and review their new car on your channel and also in the country where I live makes me feel like I have met you personaly! I'll be here to watch more videos like this one! Bye
If I was paying Porsche prices, I'd want proper Porsche flat-6 goodness. It's cute that Porsche is offering this, but that MSRP needs to go down. But seeing as most people buy these for the badge now-adays, I don't think they really care.
Going to have to disagree with Matt on the 'progress' comment. The sound of the car is its heart and soul. The 6 cylinder porsches are plenty fast enough for a sports car; to sacrifice that beautiful porsche sound in the name of extra 'performance'... I'm not for it. Give me the slower car that is more engaging, communicative, and soulful.
I love the ruggedness and efficiency of four cylinder high performance motors. I've driven a vintage Porsche 912 and a 4 cylinder BMW 3 series for years, wonderful and simple to drive and maintain. Carbon reduction and therefore efficiency is the mode of the age, so this new Boxster is all good. Thanks for the review, very fair and unbiased!
+Dre2383 He said right in the beginning that this was paid for by Porsche. I mean, as long as it's not some underhanded advertisement with shitty content, what's the problem with stuff like this?
I like how Porsche flew you out, your in Portugal, and this still feels like a true one take. Keep it up Matt! I don't see how you don't have 3 times the number of subs...
I just test drove one and it felt fantastic. without sport exhaust it only sounded "okay" but with the sport exhaust I think it would sound very decent. it felt very sporty and buttoned down through the on/off ramps and quick but not extremely fast. I originally was thinking I wanted a 911 so I could have back seats for my kids... after reconsidering, the back seats are not useful enough to warrant the 911 even though it did feel great to drive (991.2 Carrera), I think I'll grab a Cayman or Boxster S (hopefully a GTS when i'm ready to buy) and still have money left over for a 4 door BMW 340i or something. Pleasant driving experience!
Nice video in that it reflects the fun drive that the 718 S is. So much better than the 981 and to my humble view, ticks more boxes for me than the 911 (and yes, i have owned a 911). The 718 stands on its own now and is no longer a poor mans porsche and i love it.
9:40 It's a cultivator with a trailer... very popular all over Europe (and Asia too I think). They often use similar engine from mower. There's plenty of brands, including Honda, Iseki, Kubota, Staub, Husqvarna, Stihl, Viking, etc...
+BXRchampion1993 I'm a fan of good gas mileage and torque that comes in at low rpm and keeps on all the way to peak rpm. The engine performs better in every aspect.
+hdidane00 The GT4 and R are so very similar, but the GT4 takes the R's lunch money every day of the week. The Mercede's GT is just too expensive to be considered part of this "club". So for me it has to either be the 718 or the GT4. If you have the money, you get the more expensive GT4, if you don't have the money then you get the 718. In real life I'd wait for the 4cyl turbo cayman because I hate convertibles so I'd end up with a 2.5 turbo Cayman S.
Matt i´ve been a follower for quite a while now,, unaware that you were in my country, but also in my hometown, i came to now figure out that you actually passed by me driving that lovely boxster s! I'm sure you loved Portugal and Cascais as much as my North American friends! keep up the great work and videos! Greetings from Portugal, Alvaro.
A Subaru is a flat 4, not an inline 4. Well, arguably it's a boxer 4, but that makes very little difference in sound at 4 cylinders compared to the flat 4.
+Veyronp87 would sound way better naturally aspirated. but yeah...no sound to fall in love with, you want to hear singing and all you are getting are 'sweet nothings' whispered in your ear. ugh
The flat four is very impressive, but let's remember that Porsche is introducing these engines because they need to meet CAFE and C02 emission standards...not because they want to. I know that this engine beats the 3.4 flat six in numbers, but I'll take the H6 engine over the H4 every time.
Sure the H6 sounds way better, but it's not as though the only benefit of the H4 is economy. The on-paper numbers like power and torque are one thing, but the powerband is just huge now (peak torque at 1900rpm and peak power at 6800) The 718s sacrifice noise and in return get every other bonus.
mattn5160 No! What they want is a cheaper modular engine to make more money of. All manufacturers do this and porsche has jumped on the wagon. People seems to accept that crap and gladly pays for it. The same engine with different software settings and different pricetags. Would you pay extra for different softwares in your mobile phone? No, the hardware is why you pay the extra $. Fool me once... During my lifetime there's plenty of slightly used performance cars to enjoy!
Yes serious smile per mile value with these. A stage 2 tune gets these pulling harder then a gt3 over the quarter! Wtf talk about g8 performance for $$ 🚗💨✔️
I don't mind the new sound at all. It sounds exotic and motor-y. I'll be honest, this might be the Porsche I'd be most likely to buy. The convertible would be a nice match for SoCal.
I wouldn't say it sounds like "sti" it's just that sti and this cars both have a flat 4. So you should say it sounds like flat 4. Like you say cars sounds like v8 but not the name of the brand.
It's great ? The sound takes some getting use to ? I got to get on board with Porsche on this one ? That doesn't sound convincing at all . If this is progress then Porsche should put the flat four in the 911 funny right. . Poor Boxter , Poor Cayman . Engineering Marvels being held back ..
+Andreas Breslawski That's the problem!! This car closes an eye to the Z4 and the TT cabrio. But all the truly great cars cannot be placed in a segment and they create a segment. In which segment did the first boxster belong when it appeared? Which car was the competitor of the 1978 Porsche 928, 1989 Nissan R32 GT-R or the 1994 Impreza WRX STi ???(the EVO became really competitive later on).
My only thought is that Porsche decided to differentiate the Boxster /Cayman to justify the extra price of the 911. But when the first boxster appeared, the slogan was "no more 4-cylinders", young guys don't know that but I am old enough to remember it.
I don't blame him for not criticizing it, it is hard to when they fly you somewhere nice and I appreciate that he disclosed that, and I like the video because I learn't more about it. But that is not a sports car sound, that is a mellow growl reminiscent of dump truck. The only way you could truly think that it sounded good was if you were a Porsche fanboy or had very low standards. Of course the logical thing to have done (in isolation) would have been to just turbo-charge a 6 cyclinder, but of course they didn't want to do that because the car would then be too good compared to the more expensive 911. Especially with the superior mid engine layout versus a rear engine. The old Boxster/Cayman was frequently getting better reviews than 911s. All the decision makers at Porsche have probably got a GT4, 911R and GT3s, so they don't care, in fact they want to keep their cars EXCLUSIVE and from depreciating and are leaving the scraps (boxer 4) for 'normal' customers. Their model lineup is kind of screwed.
Matt you should make a video of all the best moments from your one takes, favorite cars, favorite moments i.e. people in the road with the m4 or the tree stump and the huracan
Hard-Edge Painting I mean the car would be as good with an updated old engine; plus you will have the NA feel and the noise. With this new engine; its just fast...that's it. Might as well go electric...*shudder*.
TheSmokingTire Im sure with Porsche's boffins, they could achieve it if they wanted to. Maybe not exactly the same numbers, but ballpark figures with increased displacement or techno wizardry. And you get to keep the noise and feel as well. The problem is the EU emissions which is destroying fun cars. Honestly, watching your video; I couldn't care less if it was electric now. Almost every other reviewer is lamenting the demise of the 6 cylinder. The new car just doesn't seem to have the excitement anymore. At least, the type you want from a Porsche. That engine would be perfect in the new STI though. But in a Porsche; it has to have the X factor.
+engared I don't really care what others say. I drove the car 400 miles, twice as much as any other journalist (I had my own car; didn't have to share) and I loved it.
The all-new Porsche Boxster STI. People are gonna modify these to hell in the next few years. OH I forgot to mention. Matt is *clearly hinting* that he's been tipped off in this video AND in the description box ("Porsche flew me to Portugal, fed me, and put me in the Intercontinental Hotel Estoril for this review"). So *take what he says with a pinch of scepticism*. 718 is a great car, but we all know the 981 (older Cayman Boxster gen) was the true hero.
Why d'you have to go with Porsche on this teeny tiny engine? It's all for global warming hysteria which is based on highly dubious science and the European car manufacturers are only downsizing their engines because the bureaucrats in the EU make it law. Hopefully, it looks like the EU's days are numbered and once it crumbles, this nonsense of downsizing will END. While I like the car, the engine sounds terrible.
+lapamful Yeah, I know and its crazy that the entire scientific community is on board with the dubious science with only a fringe group of scientists who have the correct answer.
No it isn't. How is carbon dioxide, the air we breathe out - which feeds plants - pollution or warms the earth's atmosphere? It isn't a consensus, that is a claim made with skewed statistics. It is 8% of scientists that believe in man made global warming. Do some research before turning your jobs over to China and India.
So Technically this Car is Faster than the Cayman GT4 although it did 7:42 vs the GT4's 7:40 cause the GT4 is on Aggressive Cup2 Tires
Beeeeeep!
I salute your car enthusiasm on s daily!
+luimarco How bout a video on Blaha's newly discovered white supremacist past, reptilian lies etc.? guaranteed to drive some traffic to your channel kpsutbi
+luimarco Good spot Lui. Car knowledge on the dayleee.
Went from watching your video to this, only to see this comment. If the fans don't go to Lui, Lui goes and finds the fans!

Yeah you can call this thing a secretary's car all you want but chances are it will kick your car's ass! Great job Matt and Porsche 👍
Light, tight, and fast. Just the way I like 'em.
Challenge for you-will they sound good again?
+ARMYTRIX can you guys make it sound like a sti? lol
Balo657 it is already sounding 90% like a STI, should be easy.
I think Porsche got exactly the video they hoped for from you. Good choice on flying you out there. They knew you wouldn't be overly nostalgic about the 6-cylinder and judge the turbo-4 for what it is and give the car an honest review.
Is Portugal full of people who just keep appearing out of the bushes?
Google 'Dogging'.
Based on the rally footage I have seen from there, yes.

did you shoot any one takes on some of the local modified cars from lisbon or was it just the boxters? Hope ypu enjoyed your stay, greetings from Lisbon.
This was a press launch I was in Portugal for 24
Hours
TheSmokingTire hopefully you come back some time theres alot of cars around lisbon and further north that would be good for 1 takes
+André Ameixas :)
+André Ameixas That would be cool, but the logistics of it would mean Matt would have to arrange hotel, a rental and then have the people take their cars to him. It's not as simple as it is in the states
+Groundskeeper Willie unfortunatly your right, but knowing the guys out here if the oportunity presented itself guys would be down for it.

Should have given that guy a ride
+S Miller but...but Matt isnt a gay
+S Miller The guy walking in the beggining or the guy driving an engine?
***** The guy walking who was getting all excited about the car
These videos get better each time.
This car looks & sounds 10/10 especially for a 4cyl.
Sounds really good actually, especially for a turbo 4 banger. But that said, I'm a sucker for WRX/STI exhaust notes, so I'm biased. Could be way worse all things considered.

Because you country and roads are beautiful! :)

The older N/A Boxter's and Cayman's are gonna appriciate in money a lot because of the green engine in this :(

+hampstershat123 I wasn't being sarcastic about that...
Dre2383
Cool sorry for misunderstanding then.. you have to understand sarcasm isn't the easiest thing to detect on the internet.
I like how Porsche flew you out, your in Portugal, and this still feels like a true one take. Keep it up Matt! I don't see how you don't have 3 times the number of subs...
The other important Porsche 4cyl -- the 356...
+Michael Brown And the 718, 550, 904 ...
The list is long, and I only got about half of them in the video
+TheSmokingTire Great videos. Keep up the good work.

thought you'd pickup that kid to take him up and down the road once for the time of his life.
Awesome review thanks. Subscribed 😊
The Boxster should have been a four all along. That would have helped the 911 & Boxster be more distinctive.
audio sounds good dude keep this new setup its much clearer and louder than previous onetake vids keep up the excellent work
Setup is exactly the same as its been for the last 4 months
Portugal
Hope you had a great time here in Portugal. Bem-vindo!
I think it sounds pretty good, at least compared to most 4-cylinder cars, but I also think the same of Subaru's.
holy hell I don't think I've ever seen such high res and clean footage on my phone. nice camera!
You mean to say it sounding like a STi is a bad thing? Psh that makes it way better :D
Best of both worlds haha
Spot on review. Own and drive mine everyday and just cant get enough of it. 10/10 porsche, well done! 👊
get that engine installed into a type 2 splitty bus. :)
Congratulations, Matt. I would say Porsche flying you over and hosting you means you have finally made it.
Car looks good. Porsche can't really do anything wrong to me. Just not to hot on that turbo 4 cylinder noise, but mehh.
+BXRchampion1993
I'm a fan of good gas mileage and torque that comes in at low rpm and keeps on all the way to peak rpm. The engine performs better in every aspect.

so which one would you pick guys a cayman GT4, cayman R, boxter 718, or a Mercedes GTs. kids not concerned.

+hdidane00
GT4.
It's excellent.
+hdidane00 Mercedes for a day, then 718 for a daily
I need a bib when I watch these videos on the new Porsches, can't stop drooling on myself.
I don't like the sound of it.. Looks is very good, but the sound is a bit of a shame.
It sounds EXACTLY like an STi...
I'm pretty sure somebody will make equal length headers for it and make it sound like BRZ turbo.
inline 6 and flat 6 sound differently and so do inline 4 and flat 4 though.
A Subaru is a flat 4, not an inline 4. Well, arguably it's a boxer 4, but that makes very little difference in sound at 4 cylinders compared to the flat 4.
And with the right header a Lotus Elan sounds just like a pinto...do you hear Lotus owners complain? I think not!
It's awesome to see Matt in Portugal, we're sorry our roads are crap for sports cars...but I hope you enjoyed the rest of the country.
little disappointed with the sound, but a great car.
People seems to
accept that crap and gladly pays for it.
The same engine with different software settings and different pricetags. Would you pay
extra for different softwares in your mobile phone? No, the hardware is why you pay the extra
$.
Fool me once... During my lifetime there's plenty of slightly used performance cars to enjoy!
Peter Ökvist nothing you said is correct
I like everything about the new car except the black bar across the back hatch.
+Sam Smith I think thats their because its the resting place for the active wing maybe, thats what it looks like to me.
I saw it at an autoshow. The black bar looks better in person.
Yes serious smile per mile value with these. A stage 2 tune gets these pulling harder then a gt3 over the quarter! Wtf talk about g8 performance for $$ 🚗💨✔️
Do yo u need a 3rd radiator w stage 2?
@@arr0gant1 stage 2 no stage 3 yes
I like that....I like that...
+Big Boss saying "it sounds like flat 4" seems a little redundant, seeing as it is one.
Great audio in this video Matt considering you're in a convertible. Better than some videos when you have a roof. New tech?
I thought Porsche didn't compromise? That four cylinder sounds like a compromise to me.
It makes more power and gets better fuel economy. The Germans would say that's not a compromise.
More power, better on gas, so this is more of an advance.
12:40 that's not STi, that's classic Porsche 616 (356 and 912)!
Matt I think this is the most I've ever seen you genuinely smile in a video! Cheers man great review
that sounds STI all the way
all the suby guys are gonna be like lets go drive our porsches
Hahaha for reals 😂
taylor wagneers Porsche and STI should never be used in the same sentence.
right over your pinhead
taylor wagneers Who are you calling a pin head?
Wow, Portugal is beautiful. And, I like that Boxster.
I don't like the direction Porsche goes lately. Good engineers keep up high the quality but the concept is flawed.
It really shows how fast and how easy with comfort the driver hits over 100 miles beautifully done great super dun cat Porsche Boxster S
Should have taken the thumbs up kid for a ride.
+Mortalomena Thought the exact same thing.
But the question is: would you let an unknown/possibly grubby kid in a brand new Porsche that isn't yours?
Hard-Edge Painting Even more so if its a press car lol
Mortalomena
That's why you and I aren't press. ;)
I haven't previously been a fan of the look of the Boxster, but this one looks great!
And you forgot about the 356.
Have it and it is a keeper!
lol this guy at 7:50
I don't blame him for not criticizing it, it is hard to when they fly you somewhere nice and I appreciate that he disclosed that, and I like the video because I learn't more about it.
Sounds like a Subaru
Porsche made flat-four engines before subaru
Double jealous on this one. The car and the place. Yes please.
I dont normally comment, but +68k for a 2 seater 4 cylinder? How about no.
+BranPSU13 why noT?
Its a nice weekend car.
Matt you should make a video of all the best moments from your one takes, favorite cars, favorite moments i.e. people in the road with the m4 or the tree stump and the huracan
terrible sounding car...
After going up that road for the third time I was just thinking - go right, please go right I want to see what's along the other way.
Sounds like poop
+SDD525 the 2.0 in the new Camaro sounds better
+SDD525 Which isn't saying much.
you have fans in Portugal also, nice to see you here
IMO the STI sounds better than this. This thing sounds like a lawn mower with a fart can exhaust on it. FLAT 6 NA ALL DAY LONG.
Salutes from Portugal Matt! I was hyped to know you where here!
Yuck with that engine.
+engared
Liked when he said: "Does it sound like an STI?" *turns engine on*
I answered: Yes! XD
Hard-Edge Painting I mean the car would be as good with an updated old engine; plus you will have the NA feel and the noise. With this new engine; its just fast...that's it.
Might as well go electric...*shudder*.
+engared it makes 35 more horsepower, 43 more lb/ft, and gets 15% better fuel economy at the same time. Not possible with the 6
TheSmokingTire Im sure with Porsche's boffins, they could achieve it if they wanted to.
Great vid Matt. People just have to trust Porsche. Their smarter than us.
4 bangers are for peasants.
+Shadow Hamster Yeah man that $80k car sure is for peasants only.
+BBDSmint yeah wtf is he doing with a $80k car? What a peasant....
if a 'peasant' has won the World Endurance Championship and LeMans the last 2 years...sign me up
The all-new Porsche Boxster STI.
Um. I'm pretty happy with a turbo 4 cylinder. Its not really that small.
+lapamful
Yeah, I know and its crazy that the entire scientific community is on board with the dubious science with only a fringe group of scientists who have the correct answer.
Global warming is real man .-. I don't understand how people deny it!
+lapamful we dont breath carbon dioxide...
If the 919 racecar is any indication, Porsche can make a mean 4 cylinder engine. Wouldn't be surprised if they eventually put out a V4 in the future.
