Heard this for the first time, delivering pizza, on a busy Saturday night. Had to pull over to the side of the road, cause I couldn't drive any more, couldn't see the road. Once the music was over, and I could contain myself, I delivered the rest of the food, but the customers had to wonder what had the pizza guy been crying about... Saddest song I ever heard. No wonder why I love NPR, and this radio show. Amazing.
I had a similar experience with "A Little Bit of Everything" by Dawes on NPR years ago. Really moving stuff. I wish there was more real radio and more real listeners. On Demand everything is very limiting.
To me, it’s a happy song (while still being sad). It’s pretty much saying we are lucky to not live forever because it limits our ability to take each other for granted, so make the most of it. Listen to Elephant by Isbell...it’s SO sad.
While it seems sad, it is a true love song for it combines the reality of life with the eternity of life. What we experience here may span years, but when we meet that connecting soul, then even after we are gone, we live on.
@@Jaewhitfield When you're on the other side of 60, as my husband and I are, this is very sad. Makes me bawl everytime. You begin to think about your lifetime and how much time you wasted with the dumbest things.
I had that same exact kind of experience at work one morning north central Kansas, hungover, traveling work, in a desolate lonely unfamiliar place, my work 4 wheeler STUCK in the mud and then it started raining on me again. So theres my excuse I was already pretty vulnerable.. Then ELEPHANT came through on my earbuds while streaming Spotify and I frickin lost it man. Bawled my eyes out. Granted I listen almost exclusively to instrumentals.. Never had a song hit so hard I wanted to play it again but I put my soul in front of the mirror and said don't. you. dare. NOT NOW. Isbell is a real contender among the greats from all time!
I’m sure I’m just one of many but this song hits hard. I’m 50 now and it’s been 7 years since losing my wife to cancer and I remember having conversations of how life would be without her. Sadly, it’s been worse than I imagined. There are dead people roaming this earth, I’m living proof.
Samuel Fink Lost my soulmate 17 months ago. I’m the one ‘spending some days alone.’ You don’t get over it or get through it. But the tears I shed now are worth the joy we shared during the years we had together. Well worth it.
You should watch the live youtube stream of Live from Here (it's only when they're in certain locations), it does the same thing for me! And I always learn something about music from the commentors.
Not to mention that this might be one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, this video probably contains THE most tasteful mandolin solo ever. It's amazing to hear a virtuoso like Chris Thile, who's able to play like 400 notes in one bar, entirely putting his skills in the service of the song. What a genius!
Yes indeed, the mandolin part, not in other versions, brings something brand new to what is, indeed, the most beautiful love song by a male songwriter I have ever hand.
The ACL video of this is still my favourite, especially as there he is onstage with his wife, but this variant is great too. It is quite simply the most beautiful love song by a male songwriter I have ever heard. I almost died a few months ago, leaving a child and his mother behind. This song destroys me every time.
Not only is this one of the best songs ever written by one of the best modern country artists but it also features the world's greatest mandolin player This is beautiful
This song for me just gives me hope and makes me smile there is a girl I have been in love with for two years and this song always make imagine putting a ring on her finger and having 2 kids running around and just living the perfect life. It always inspires me to try harder and make my life more full. This song is also my favourite one to do for open mic and really means a lot to me.
We were there, so lucky to have found 3rd row seats a couple days before the show, perhaps unused friends/family tix. The proximity added to the power of this remarkable song, and the exquisite (quiet) musicianship. One of the coolest things was watching Jason subtle but obvious joy as the Chris' added their ideas. The room was rapt, and I was one of many visibly moved by the gift of sharing this moment.
A uniquely beautiful song to with which both Chris T. and Chris E. bring an element within that really adds to the vibe that pulls your heartstrings! Takes my breath away! Thank You!
Love you Jason, Amanda and the 400 unit. Been to see you sooo many times. Actually saw you in a tiny theater in Ga..The "Gem". Since then, about 11 times between Nashville, Chattanooga, and Atlanta. And hopefully many many more. ❤❤

Keep strong
Lost my lover of twenty eight years to a motorcycle accident in July. One day here and next just gone. Never had a chance to say goodbye.
This comment was a tear jerker. Hang in there and stay strong:)
It's the price we pay for love...
The only RUclips comments section I have ever read and felt better about humanity. Jason really can bring out the good in folks.

Well, when you put out material like this it’s kinda hard to draw heat out of people lol even the man on the moon knows this song is great.
Means even more when you get to the age that you can see the finish line.
And change the lyrics to "maybe we'll get 10 years together "
Mark Bassett 40 years wasn’t long enough...not nearly enough...I’m the one spending the days alone.
Lili Marlene I’m so sorry. I pray strength and grace for you.
Amen
I am with you brother. God yes.

Greatest song writer of the 21st century meets the greatest musician of the 21st century. What a great gift. Thanks guys!

This is beautiful
One of the most beautiful and emotional songs I've ever heard. What a talent.
"Maybe time running out is a gift."
I always tear up when I hear this song.
It hits deeper than a knife ever could.
Heard this live on the radio last night. Absolutely blew me away.
yvl grrl if you’ve not heard his other stuff, you should. Jason is phenomenal.

Yes sir.

This is one of the greatest love songs I've ever heard. Wow
I sent to my dear friend who has terminal cancer. I love you Stacey 💜
Chris and his mandolin adds so much to this song.. So so great
I can’t think of another songwriter where you are so hooked listening to. I never know what line is coming next. What a talent.
An amazing song about what true love feels like. I wish I could give more time than I have to my love!
I dont know why that statement made me cry ....
The most brutal love song which is so perfect for couples who have lived there lives together!
Guys, you just made me shed quite some tears. But crying rarely felt so good.
A uniquely beautiful song to with which both Chris T. and Chris E. bring an element within that really adds to the vibe that pulls your heartstrings! Takes my breath away! Thank You!
Such a beautiful song.
Absolutely Beautiful ❤️
Most brutally beautiful love sing of all damn time..I So miss my girl. Why'd she have to die? Oh God Why?
I'm here from a random imgur comment. Damn this song is beautiful. I can't follow the lyrics that well (not English native) but I can FEEL it.
Try to get someone to provide you with as close as possible an accurate translation. You will feel it even more.
Probably the greatest Love song ever written
this touches me so much.
Just so beautiful
Just passed the forty year mark. Don`t know if I can go on by myself.
I was inadvertently exposed to this while casually listening to my favourite cast...
Thank you DJ Lou and the Pete & Sebastian Show
Loving Jason's nod to Critter at the end. "Nailed it!"
I’m balling my eyes out!
I just love it 🥰
I just love his voice.
Best wishes on your birthday. Keep on rocking on.

Well, now I have proof that npr's "live from here" sucks. They even make jason isbell sound average.
