If any of you are not already aware of it Jason is not only one of the best song-writers in America today, he is also one of the best guitarists, check out some of his work with his former band Drive-By Truckers. This man can rock & roll HARD when he wants to
Like you fellas I'm a black man raised in the 80's and 90's who loves hip-hop and r&b. But also love good music no matter the genre. I first heard Jason Isbell watching an episode of Austin City Limits on PBS. So I must hear you brothas review the song that blew my mind... and lead me to dig deeper into this man. Please review Jason Isbell's Austin City Limits video singing "Cover Me Up". He goes IN on that song.
As an almost 70 year old woman, those 40 years have come and gone. But those years I will likely spend alone are very real to me. Just driving down the road listening to Sirius this song came on and shook me to my soul. I love it.
Little background here: The girl singing backup is Jason’s wife Amanda Shires, who also plays violin in the band (she is also a great solo artist who is worthy of a reaction). So, the other thing is before Jason’s album Southeastern and during his time with the band DriveBy Truckers, Jason was a raging alcoholic! I mean the guy had a big bottle of Jack Daniels on stage at all times. The guy was gonna die. I hung out with him a few times during this period, it was declining pretty rapidly. Checkout the drive by truckers song “goddamn lonely love”. It’s just as brilliant, but you can see he is in a different place...... So, meeting Amanda basically saved his life, he got sober. He basically wrote that Southeastern album to his wife . Checkout the song “cover me up”. It’s amazing
yea he lost the original guitarist in the 400 unit Browan Lollar because of his antics.. who moved on to play with st paul and the broken bones I like vaden tho think he's honest a better fit
I've been married for 21 years and these lyrics just kill me. "Knowing one of us will have to spend some days alone" is sheer poetry and always brings a little tear to my eye every time I hear it!
My grandpa passed away in January after being married to my grandma for 68 years. This song had always been one of my favorites, but I couldn't share it with my dad until today because of how perfectly this represented their relationship. My dad called me within 4 minutes of sending the link, and I could that the song had shook him like it shakes me. "You know I could never share that with your grandma, she wouldn't make it through." were his first words.Turns out my parents' 40 year anniversary was last summer and it hit extra hard. Jason Isbell's writing is on another level.
Im not gonna lie...I seen this reaction as a patron already. but I love this song and yalls reaction. great job guys. I think yall will enjoy "Cover me up" by Jason Isbel.
You're appreciation of the writing here reveals a wealth of understanding. As someone who lost his wife of 43 years, 3 years ago, the layers to these lyrics are really brought home. There are very few lines ever written that are as personal or truthful.
Jason Isbell is on fire right now. Everything he touches turns to gold. You should check out his first band Drive-By Truckers. They're one of the greatest rocks bands of the last 20 years. "Sink Hole" is great & it's themes are just as timely now as when it was released.
Watch him perform it live when she joins their shows. He sings it looking in to her eyes. How they don't both just burst in to tears is beyond me. Check out Cover Me Up too. Another song he wrote for her. In concert it will give you goosebumps.
You guys are awesome, and truly genuine. Jason Isbell is one of the greatest songwriters of our generation and by far my favorite artist currently performing. If you ever get to see him live you are in for a treat. He really cranks it up and rocks out live. Two more Jason Isbell song suggestions for you. Speedtrap Town and Cover Me Up are both great songs to check out and Hudson Commodore is another favorite of mine that showcases a little different style.
I'm a rocker/metal head through and through but I'm beginning to get a soft spot for this type of music as well and Jason Isbell can write some beautiful and amazing songs, loved it for sure. Here's a rock/metal request for a duet The Promise by In This Moment and for some more music like this check out a dude named Shawn James
I don't even listen to much country, but his songwriting is undeniable. I also love how his band does some pretty killer soloing when they play live. You can do amazing lyrics *and* you can shred? That's nuts.
Mostly into rock and metal myself, but I do enjoy some country. Particularly 50's, 60's, and 70's. But there are a few gems out there today. This is a great song. I'm just not a fan of the "pop" country that gets played on the radio.
Yes! Jason Isbell pours his heart out in almost every sentence he writes, and I think it's amazing that through you, there are gonna be more fans of his music. I'd suggest Drive-by Truckers - Goddamn Lonely Love or Jason Isbell's Cover Me Up, two of my favorites from Isbell's catalogue.
delanguus his song dress blues kills me...I never knew my great uncle Antonio Orozco but learning about how he was killed in Vietnam at the Age of 20 makes that song hit me hard
delanguus Goddamn Lonely Love got me through a lot of long nights, sitting on a dock with my feet in the river, trying to sort through a surprise divorce. It's amazing how so many of his songs hit you in so many ways.
To whomever may find it interesting, 'The 400 Unit' refers to the psychiatric ward of ECM hospital (aka Eliza Coffee Memorial) in Jason Isbell's hometown of Florence, Alabama. It's called the 400 Unit because it is a separate building located on the 400 block of the same street. Whereas, ECM is located on the 200 block. I know because it is also my hometown. Although, to be specific, Jason Isbell is from Greenhill, AL. A small community just outside Florence.
He and his wife are actually singing to each other on this little diddy. Y'all should check out either Speed Trap Town or Live Oak.. some more phenomenal songwriting from him. Or if you'd like to hear his Southern Rock roots, check out the live version of "Decoration Day" with the 400 Unit. Different type of subject matter but really shows off his versatility in songwriting
Master Vol speed trap town is my favorite! But if they wanna get into before he fell in love with Amanda, my favorite is “goddamn lonely love” by Drive-By Truckers!
@@LRogers2806 I'd have to add 'Cover Me Up' to this list.... 4 great songs.... but this week I fell in love with 'Pale Fire' which they wrote together ....
I love this song so much. It makes me think of my parents - they had 40 years before my dad passed, and my mother is spending these days alone. Makes me cry like a freakin' baby.
Jason has such an incredible gift for poetry. In my mind, he has the greatest "pen" out there right now, doesn't matter the genre. Match that with the slightly dusty, world-weary tone of his voice and it's pure magic.
So stoked to have found your channel tonight. You guys are epic, deep and on point in analysis and chill with the grooves no matter the genre... Found you first through Ghost though! :) Thank you.
I remember the first time I heard this song it came on an alternative rock station as I was driving to work. I was in a bad mood and i wanted some punk/angry music and I was pissed when the guitar part started. Can you imagine being pissed at that guitar part? I was in a bad place at that moment. By the end of the song I was crying.
I can't love you guys enough. I'm a former music journalist and love your insights and reactions to the songs you review. It's obvious you two are true music lovers who really pay attention to the song as you play it and you guys have a great chemistry with each other. Would love to go to a concert with ya! Keep up the great work!
I've been dieing to see y'all take on this song. This song is about his wife who plays the violin in the band. He was a severe alcoholic and she brought him around to being sober and turning his life around.
We need more Jason Isbell!!!!!!!!!! “Cover Me Up” “Speed Trap Town” “In a Razor Town” (Live from Alabama) “Outfit” (Live from Alabama) “Something More Than Free” “The Life You Chose” “Dress Blues” “Alabama Pines”
James Adkisson I agree! I’m sure they will love Roundabout for its genius writing and for the undeniable “groove” it has. Also, I feel like they should give Aqualung a listen, it’s a great song as well! I’d like to see them branch into Molly Hatchet, Skynyrd, Living Colour, or even the Doors; their take on music is so genuine!
My daddy only lasted a few months after my mama passed, they had many years together, he couldn’t live without her. I believe they’re together again, and I’ll see them both someday.
You guys should listen to Sufjan Stevens. He has some the most beautiful lyricism I've ever heard. Casimir Pulaski Day, Death With Dignity, and The Mistress Witch from McClure are some of his best.
Pretty new subscriber from Kentucky. Love it that y’all are reacting to my favorite musicians and shedding a little light on them. I have also been watching your other videos and expanding my playlist. Keep it up.
Just straight beautiful and from the heart as well, great reaction almost got a tear out of George. Anyway y’all already know what I’m gonna request is Alan Jackson’s “Here in the Real World” and “Remember When” Have a bless night #freethinkers
I love the way they alternate in the chorus. 'One day I'll be gone.' 'One day you'll be gone'. and one of them cuts out on the second line. That drives it home, hard.
I'm sure that they've been recommended to you before, but you should check out a band that Jason Isbell used to be a part of, Drive-By Truckers. He wrote some great songs with them and the band has some other great songwriters, as well.
Hey dudes I noticed you guys are really into groove and rhythm when it comes to rock music. I strongly suggests listening to Kyuss, especially the song "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop". These guys are one of the pioneers of the genre "Desert Rock" (or stoner rock) and are basically the embodiment of groove.
Relatively Easy or White Mans World are really good “perspective” songs from Jason Isbell. The dude is one of the greatest wordsmiths we’ve ever seen. Not every day play list music, but quiet night, having a few cocktails music for sure.
This is such a beautiful song. Great writing and wonderfully sung. And great review! If you want another song i recommend "Last of my Kind" from the same album, where he deals with social change moving to a big City from his small hometown. Or "Chaos and Clothes" which In which he offers his friend help dealing with his divorce. That whole Album has many gems i often come back to. "Anxiety" and "White Mans World" (where he tries to deal with how to raise his daughter in a world with many privileges and disadvantages that race, gender or status bring) stand out too.
I simply have a hard time listening to this song without fighting back tears. If there was one song in my life that I wish I would have written, this would be the song. His lyrics stick with you and you cannot shake them. And having Amanda adding background on his music adds to this masterpiece...
I’m so happy you guys did this song, it’s one of my favorites. Next you absolutely need to listen to some Zac Brown Band, they’re considered a country band but they’re capable of anything (just listen to their album Jekyll and Hyde). I would recommend you guys listen to Goodbye In Her Eyes, it’s a very heavy song but you’ll love it.
Thanks a lot guys it's 4:30 in the morning and I'm bawling uncontrollably..... I'm calling in sick and taking a personal day....Great Song great channel love yall!
I love that you guys unlike some reaction videos where they just re quote the lyrics, y’all actually break the lyrics down and paint the picture of the song. It’s so annoying when people just quote the song and say how good the song is. Instead of breaking it down how you hear it and interpret it!
Another great choice! I think 'If We Were Vampires' was probably the best written song of 2017.
Arguably the best written song of all time. Isbell is a savant.
Grady Smith love your channel man!
Grady Smith at least play the whole song
Isbell always hits the nail on the head.
'Cover Me Up' was me and my wife's first dance at our wedding.
He ain't lying!!!!
Preach brother !!!
We must have seen the same show. Just a wow moment.
Great song choice. I would also suggest: white mans world and last of my kind.

George, that's Jason's wife Amanda Shires! I'm guessing if you knew that, you wouldn't be able to hold back the tears! :P
Joel Rodely my favorite line in that song is "or the mercy in your sense of right or wrong" small nod to their kiddo Mercy
This is also pertinent information for Cover Me Up and Molotov (among others).
I've been married for 21 years and these lyrics just kill me. "Knowing one of us will have to spend some days alone" is sheer poetry and always brings a little tear to my eye every time I hear it!
And Mercy is their daughter’s name.
Jeff Storey wow, didn’t know that 👍🏼
This song always gives me chills. His wife singing backup just seals the deal. Jason Isbell is life. Thank you.
Jason Isbell is the greatest songwriter of this century without a shadow of doubt. He saved my life.
Guys check out Anxiety off the same album.
he's my friend
He saved mine as well. A truly beautiful soul.
I FEEL LIKE HE SAVED A FRIEND OF MINE AS WELL!!
zoso frodo Watch the fall and rise of Jason Isbell. Much love.
My grandpa passed away in January after being married to my grandma for 68 years. Rhonda Roo agreed, another earnest, authentic love song. He's amazing.
That song live is ridiculous. He does a big build up into it with a different instrument entering the song. It's incredible.
i would love to see him live. ❤
I like Speed Trap town
He is AMAZING live...and I see a ton of shows. He is one of the best.
He sings that with his wife, who is an amazing fiddle player, and helped him beat his addictions. Thank you for these videos!
As someone else said, his wife Amanda Shires is accompanying him on vocals. She is also an artist and incredible fiddle player.
I’ve heard Jason Isbell say he had a hard time even singing this song without breaking down
justzanin He’s been quoted as saying it took him 4 attempts to sing it to her before he could finally get through the entire song. ❤️
Heard the same thing. He wrote it and tried to sing it to his wife but it took him a few tries.
You can hear his voice quiver when he says "and hope it isn't me who's left behind". Very emotional!
To me Jason Isbell is one of the best writers in music and he puts on one hell of a live show
You're appreciation of the writing here reveals a wealth of understanding. As someone who lost his wife of 43 years, 3 years ago, the layers to these lyrics are really brought home. There are very few lines ever written that are as personal or truthful.

sunnydaleclassof99 cottonseed is my favorite DBT song. They have a lot of great tunes
Lonely Love is an amazing song by him in the Drive-By Truckers.
Where The Devil Don't Stay and Zip City are the most amazing DBT songs imo, but I do have a Cooley bias.
That and decoration day
The day John Henry died is my personal favorite.
Jason Isbell - Cover Me Up, Live Oak, Different Days, or Relatively Easy
Tyler Childers - Nose On The Grindstone, Harlan Road
always great reviews though you guys!! One of the best reaction channels to happen
I’m mainly subscribed for hip hop, but I like widening my taste, and I really liked this.
Watch him perform it live when she joins their shows. He sings it looking in to her eyes. How they don't both just burst in to tears is beyond me. Check out Cover Me Up too. Another song he wrote for her. In concert it will give you goosebumps.
He said in an interview that it took him six tries to play it to her when he first wrote it. He'd start crying and couldn't get through it.
Awww…

+1 shawn james
His songwriting is so good I don't know how he isn't more well known.
ruclips.net/video/yZ3I_x6TgjY/видео.html - Jason also knows how to rock - give it a chance

Terrific review. You guys should check out another song by Jason Isbell, called 24 Frames.
also, "the mercy in your sense of right and wrong" -- Mercy is their young daughter's name

Greenhill has several people doing pretty good in the music industry.
Been to Florence and it's a FANTASTIC town!

Live Oak is songwriting perfection.
Master Vol speed trap town is my favorite! But if they wanna get into before he fell in love with Amanda, my favorite is “goddamn lonely love” by Drive-By Truckers!
Live Oak, Vampires, and Elephant are three of the best songs ever written.

You guys should check out Jason Isbell - "White Man's World" -- Definitely a wortwhile listen in today's political climate.
Even more so now... 2 years later.
yes.
I love this song so much. It makes me think of my parents - they had 40 years before my dad passed, and my mother is spending these days alone. Makes me cry like a freakin' baby.
Thank you guys for doing this specific song. Incredible writing. Brutal truth about our limited time.
Just putting in another vote for Jason’s “Decoration Day” when he was with the Drive-By Truckers.
That guitar meltdown at the end. All these years later I still break out in a grin when it kicks in.
Such an amazing song!
Decoration Day could be a movie!
Jason has such an incredible gift for poetry. In my mind, he has the greatest "pen" out there right now, doesn't matter the genre. Match that with the slightly dusty, world-weary tone of his voice and it's pure magic.
Cody Jinks: We Get By
Like it up folks
Lucas Sullenbarger anything by cody jinks
I'd love to see John Moreland - You Don't Care for Me Enough to Cry. For my money him and Jason Isbell are the two best songwriters of today.
This or Hang Me in the Tulsa County Stars, also by John Moreland, please.
I totally agree
I second this!
In the throes is one of my favorite albums my favs by him are gospel nobody gives a damn about songs anymore Blacklist your spell and 3 59 am
Jason Isbell layers his songs like fee others have. He condenses a novel into 3 minutes. He's an American treasure.
Ray Lamontagne and Jason Isbell are magicians with words !

You guys should do Jason’s song “White Man’s World”. I’d LOVE to hear your analysis of it!
Don’t need politics here. I downloaded the album and delegated this song
Shawn Melvin Why?
Music is political.
Tyler C. Tuszynski that song is about the reality of life. If that doesn’t inform your politics, you’re missing the point of being alive.
Everyone should listen to White Man's World.
We need more Jason Isbell!!!!!!!!!!
“Cover Me Up”

These guys would loose it over some Yes!
Clay Rose Yeeesss!!!
Best bass line ever!
Clay Rose AMEN! I have requested Heart of the Sunrise. But Roundabout would be dope as well.

Since y'all were wondering who the duet partner was: his wife. Which makes it 10X more beautiful
My daddy only lasted a few months after my mama passed, they had many years together, he couldn’t live without her. I believe they’re together again, and I’ll see them both someday.
Yes you will ❤️
I wish they'd known going into this song that he's singing w/ his wife. It adds another level of gravity that they'd already picked up on right away.
Listen to “Freebird 2” by Parquet Courts. Modern indie with some punk/country/70s influence and a killer baseline
I want to see them review Total Football and read the lyrics for that.
It was his wife doing the harmonizing. First time my wife and I listened to this we just sat quietly. Isbell is the man.
I love the way that these guys appreciate amazing songs.
my wedding song!!! awesome job guys! Thats his wife singing with him Amanda Shire.
Cover Me Up by Jason Isbell is amazing
You guys should listen to Sufjan Stevens. He has some the most beautiful lyricism I've ever heard. Casimir Pulaski Day, Death With Dignity, and The Mistress Witch from McClure are some of his best.
Isbell is such an amazing writer.
Pretty new subscriber from Kentucky. Love it that y’all are reacting to my favorite musicians and shedding a little light on them. I have also been watching your other videos and expanding my playlist. Keep it up.
As an Irish subscriber I also suggest Thin Lizzy - Dancing in the Moonlight. It will make you feel like 16 or 17.
You need to react to Margo Price, Lindi Ortega, Cody Jinks, Atmosphere and Colter Wall. You'll be smiling!
Just straight beautiful and from the heart as well, great reaction almost got a tear out of George. Anyway y’all already know what I’m gonna request is Alan Jackson’s “Here in the Real World” and “Remember When” Have a bless night #freethinkers

Like to see a reaction to that thanks
... Also, definitely agree that you should watch "Cover Me Up" on ACL with the same perspective. Powerful and gorgeous.
Openly weeping right now. Thanks George and Ryan! I needed to feel that deeply. Just gorgeous. And we all want to go first. So beautiful. 😭😭😭
I love the way they alternate in the chorus. 'One day I'll be gone.' 'One day you'll be gone'. and one of them cuts out on the second line. That drives it home, hard.
This is a genius song, and you guys 'get it'.
Replica by Fear Factory
Pull Me Under by Dream Theater
You guys have to listen to Guy Clark
Jason’s amazing. Cover me up is the best song EVER.
LOVE that song as well.
I'm sure that they've been recommended to you before, but you should check out a band that Jason Isbell used to be a part of, Drive-By Truckers. He wrote some great songs with them and the band has some other great songwriters, as well.
"Space City" by Drive-By Truckers (one of Mike Cooley's songs) is another great song with a similar sentiment.

Amanda Shires is the female vocalist and I highly recommend her solo stuff- "Bulletproof" for example.
Keith Whitley Dont close your eyes!
Texas Proud oh God yes
You guys should check out Coheed & Cambria's newest track 'The Dark Sentencer'. First single in their upcoming pentalogy.
I simply have a hard time listening to this song without fighting back tears. If there was one song in my life that I wish I would have written, this would be the song. His lyrics stick with you and you cannot shake them. And having Amanda adding background on his music adds to this masterpiece...
The women singing harmony is actually his wife, Amanda Shires!!!! knowing that adds another dimension, right?
I’m so happy you guys did this song, it’s one of my favorites. Next you absolutely need to listen to some Zac Brown Band, they’re considered a country band but they’re capable of anything (just listen to their album Jekyll and Hyde). I would recommend you guys listen to Goodbye In Her Eyes, it’s a very heavy song but you’ll love it.
Thanks a lot guys it's 4:30 in the morning and I'm bawling uncontrollably..... I'm calling in sick and taking a personal day....Great Song great channel love yall!
If you liked this song, and it made you feel something...react to "No Hard Feelings" by The Avett Brothers!
Joel Rodely the highlight of my year is the 3day Avett Brothers event at our House of Blues here in myrtle beach!
:59 seconds....LOL you laughin now, but you will be weeping soon.....
Fantastic! Great review.
Through those Alabama Pines🎶🎵 🌲🌲🌲🌲
“Don’t Look Back” by the band Boston
I love that you guys unlike some reaction videos where they just re quote the lyrics, y’all actually break the lyrics down and paint the picture of the song. It’s so annoying when people just quote the song and say how good the song is. Instead of breaking it down how you hear it and interpret it!
WHISKEY LULLABY! PLEASE!
Seconded
I want to see one of them start crying
They did it for patreon subscribers. I assume they'll post it publicly eventually.
I hope they reacted to the video, because it really completes the gut punch
You guys really need to do Jason’s Cover Me Up from the Live At the Ryman album
It's not a "country" request, but its in the realm:
"Hello, I'm in Delaware" by City & Colour
Suggesting Speed Trap Town, Flagship, and White man's world by Jason
Cro-Mags - Eyes Of Tomorrow
More Jason Isbell! Please!
Please do "Ænema" by Tool.
Why haven’t you reacted to more of him!!!!!
Cody jinks - David
I’d be interested to see a reaction to Jason Isbell’s “White Man’s World”
