There is actually an instrument that is made in a similar, but more professional, method, and it also has the same concept as this. For anyone that is interested, its called a Cuica or Monkey Drum. Very fun instrument in my opinion.
Here's a better one-way louder! More real!! Red Solo Cup. Hole in middle. Tie gut string, or waxed string, like for tying up turkey before cooking. Go to junk car, rip out foam piece from seat. Tie to end of string. (for storage). Get it wet, curl it around string, pull at different speeds!! This was so real, it brought feral cats running towards me at night, heading for the sound, to stalk and kill what they thought was a live chicken!!
I remember making these when I was a kid. Except no paperclip. We would put two holes in the cup about half an inch apart and loop the string though both holes so it was tied to the part of the cup between the two holes. Then we would tie a piece of foam to the other end of the string, at the oposite end of the cup, instead of using a paper towel. We'd use a yellow cup and decorate it like a chicken, glueing pieces of felt shaped like a beak and a comb to it. Adding googly eyes.
