    Nobby Nic tires are known for feeling squirmy. In a straight line on mundane trail, they feel like a dream. They make small bump compliance feel smoother than a brand new Fox 36. But...try pushing them in the corners, or riding them over anything rough, and they roll over faster than your aunt martha's weiner dog wanting a belly rub. Unless you're just tooling round on pure XC terrain and not pushing it anywhere, I would never recommend those tires to anyone. Oh...and the sidewalls, even with snakeskin, are just itching to tear.

    Not a fan of the Nobby Nics that came with my bike. They may be light but not great for durability and grip. Replaced them after the front got a sidewall slash with Maxxis Minions and liking them though heavier and slower on climbing and flats but the grip on descents has been terrific.

    I rode 27.5 x 3.0 tires in 2015 and didn't like them, and then rode a few different bikes over the last year with 27.5 x 2.8 and loved them. I think 3 inch is fatbike cumbersome, but 2.6-2.8 is good stuff. (The Rekon+ 2.8 tires are really only about 65mm wide, and they are barely wider than my 2.35 Hans Dampfs, so maybe 2.6 is the width I really like.) Also, those plus tires take about 3 pumps to change 1 psi, and I've had some where 20 psi felt horrible, 18 psi wanted to come off the rim, and 19 was magical.

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  6 лет назад

      +NoBrakes23 I used to exclusively Run 3 inch tires on my ragley hardtail. When I moved to the sb5+ I learned to appreciate 2.8. With my chromag hardtail borrowing the wheels for my Yeti, I wanted to have a 3 inch tire in the back to help soften up the trails.
      I'm hopeful that after a few more rides, and maybe using a digital tire gauge, I can get the tires dialed in.

    My favourite shorts which cost me a small fortune 'were' (I hint at what happened to them)..Troy Lee Skyline. Left probably on the roof of my car as that seems to be the place I leave stuff just before driving off; Garmins, gopros, bottles and a Fox 34 fork 15mm skewer that stayed on the roof from Cardiff to Forest Of Dean (UK) that's about 50 miles. Great, creative video edit. Always a litle jealous at the weather you folks have compared to the cold, bog-fest of Wales.

    Funny story, I️ saw the entrance to that trail and thought to myself ‘Ice 100% seen this before’ and when you said it connects to a lot of the Greenbelt Trails it clicked, my dad and I️ got lost there one time like 3 years and accidentally ended up near that specs haha. It was a fun trail tho, and took us WAY too long to get back to the greenbelt (it was our first time there). But those switchbacks were super fun.

    I didn't like the Nobby Nic in the rear either. At your weight, you should run around 15 psi. But.. I noticed terrible rolling resistance with that tire in the rear so I replaced it with a Specialized ground control. I actually had more climbing grip with a less aggressive tread

      +Shane Kweens used to have maxxis Rekon 27x2.8 front and rear. This was a 2.8 specialized slaughter front, and 3" nobby nic rear.
      I ran my rekons at ~19-18psi, so only going to ~18-17 on the 3" was still a bit too high for slow tech. 16-15.5 will hopefully get me where I want to be.

    I've noticed too that the Fox ranger shorts seem pretty thin. The Altitudes have better durability but also cost a little more too. They seem to compliment knee pads better as well if you ever want to give them a shot. But just know that Black = Gray according to Fox.

    I've noticed as you switch plus tire brands you really need to adjust your compression/rebound damping since the tires act as their own suspension too. They all need to work together, not against each other. And yea, probably less psi than you think.

    A few cheap pairs of walmart cargo shorts in rotation with chamis underneath have worked for me just fine for the last year. I've destroyed one, only out like 10 bucks. Any practical reason why they wouldn't work in place of what you bought here? Jerseys I can see spending some money on as they breath and wick where cheap cotton shirts wont. I guess I look at the shorts as somewhat disposable and know they're gonna take a beating so I don't want to spend much.

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  6 лет назад

      +Brad B For me it's about comfort, breathability, and longevity. Especially breathability in the Austin Summers.
      If the Walmart cargo shorts work for you, then I say Rock'em. I used to wear basketball shorts, but unfortunately they were too baggy and would often get caught on the seat. This would sometimes result in very awkward situations on the trail...
      Nothing like accidentally mooning the person behind you on a crunchy descent. 😳
