Don’t forget to do some fishing. Enjoy where you are, the work will always be there tomorrow. Videos of you hiking, fishing and exploring are equally as appealing to us old guys. Of course bring Lando, and be safe.
Wonderful news that you are also going to start your own homestead. How much fun is it going to be fulfilling your dream. I will be a faithful follower for sure. There is nothing more fun and rewarding than taking care of animals and providing food for our table. Blessings to you and hoping your dreams come true quickly. Barb
Great video Dan. Im pausing here, the large can with the pipe looks like an old fuel drum and the pipe would have had a hand pump attached to pump out fuel as needed. We used such things in 1940's - 50's. I am all for 'the ascetic' but I earnestly advise you to haul them all away, empty them, hose them out first, them apply a preservative to the outer parts to show them off. Or take a nice photo of them artfully arranged, frame the photo in the new shed and dump the cans. Saves you lots of work. You are a good story teller, as well as videographer, like your brother and parents. Keep it up. Thanks for your good work.
Looking forward to this rebuild, it’s probably lamp oil or kerosene in those round metal containers. I have two similar jerrycans from the 1950’s. Both needed new gaskets and one I had to reseal it’s interior with POR 15, it’s been holding for two years now.
I know I will sound like an old person here, but please consider wearing safety goggles as you do a lot of these types of projects. Believe me you do not want some of those wood chips, etc hitting your eye. That happened to me at my cabin and I had a lot of problems with that eye for over a year. Eventually the eye dr had to basically rei-injure my eye, jabbing it numerous times with a needle to allow it to heal properly. All that could have been avoided if I’d just worn safety goggles. I learned my lesson!!!
Great video Dan. One thought is to move those fuel/oil storage containers off island to a recycling facility if available. At some point they will start leaking and you don't want that leaching into the ground on the island or anywhere for that matter. Clean up and keep the containers as you can and want to. So glad you're restoring that storage shed. Most would tear it down without trying to keep the 40+ year charm. Keep up the great work and videos. You're definitely on the right track. All the Best to you and your awesome family for North Carolina, USA.
I agree that he'd doing great with these videos. And, that safely recycling the old "oil" is the necessary to keep the fluids from contaminating the ground water.
In construction, it is far more difficult to tie into existing than build from new. To modify that saying to your project.. have you considered dismantling it completely, salvaging what you can, and then re-build, including a proper foundation.. especially is this may become your blacksmith forge shop? As always, enjoyed the video Dan.. keep 'em coming 🙂
Eek I worry about Lando walking on all that debris…nails etc…and you without gloves on sometimes. Call me a mother hen worry wart! Lol 🥰 can’t wait to see this little shop/shed get restored! Thanks for preserving everything you can!
I looked at Lando when the noise started he was off. I Can't wait to see the stages you do. I would love to see the finished workshop. You come up with some interesting ideas. CHEERS 😊
Dan, makes me feel bad just watching you work so hard. You seem to enjoy doing that kind of stuff, hard to find young guys who work like you. I enjoy your videos so much. I would come help but it’s a long way from Virginia… lol… you would kill me anyway at my age.
Would it not be easier to take it “apart” and salvage whatever logs you can then find a good location for a foundation and design your own cabin. With a good foundation you will build a cabin that will last for years.
You remind me of myself at your age. My friend we all have limited energy and time on earth. Choose what and how you spend your energy and time on. Make good Choices. In my opinion if this is a structure you need and value, then completely dismantle and use what is salvageable. Build a good foundation and move forward. If this structure plays no role In Your needs, your waisting time money and energy of which your all limited on. Make good choices
Hey Dan, Strangely enough, vlogs are somewhat new to me but very interesting too. I don’t follow a lot of vlogs but yours I look forward to. You seem so at ease before the camera. Don’t know if you answer questions but I’m going to pose a couple: 1. Is your cabin a family cabin or exclusively yours? 2. Do you live in the cabin full-time or work at a mainline occupation? 3. How did your talents for “fixing” things come about? I look forward to your weekly vlogs. Follow your dreams, Dan. At a young age you emanate serenity! Dave
Not positive but that barrel and the two smaller valves tanks remind me of a still for making moonshine but hard to tell from just video but that’s what they make me think of when I saw them.
The workshop has many windows facing the lake which is only about 4 feet away from it, the old storage shed I’m rebuilding right now can also see the water from the door but there are no windows.
Nothing like tearing into something old and making it new again! Looking forward to the finished product, Dan!
Great video and great work. Wonderful that you are preserving this history! I enjoyed watching!
Glad you enjoyed it thanks!
Great video Dan your dreams are our dreams too
Really Fun video looking forward to the next seeing the roof off. Go Dan!!!
Very cool that you are restoring, and repairing these cabins! I love watching you work on them, and being home.
Glad you like them! I enjoy doing it!

Sounds good with me, thanks! I’m planning doing more of that in the future videos. 👍🏻
Good onya! Keep up with the projects!
Thanks, will do!

Make sure you lift the remaining logs and put either ground treated lumber or stone under your logs for stabilization and rot prevention.

You live in a perfect place, a private island in God’s paradise. Enjoy and make the most of it!
Dan.. you can check with your father... if any of the wood that you are burning can be used to make Charcoal.
In this case most of it is too punky and rotten. Good suggestion though. 👍🏻

Kohler makes all kinds of things for kitchen, bathroom (toilets, sinks, faucets, lighting) and they also make generators.
Very interesting thanks for the information!
Dan, those rotten logs would make a good base layer to build yourself a hugelkultur garden!
Great idea thanks!
That’s a lot of work! Looking forward to see what you do with it I’m sure it will be awesome !

Hey, I love this project! I personally hope you make it a forge. It would be exciting to follow your metallurgical adventures!

Good morning congratulations Dan.
Thank you!
If you use the Shou sugi ban of Japanese wood burning to preserve the wood, cabins would last so much longer.
I’ll look into that thanks for the information!

Oil drum probably had a hand pump on it,the other cans might have oil or other fuel
Oh cool! Thanks for the information!
10000x👍🕊
😍😍👍👍👍👍
10k + subs. Congratulations!
Thanks!

That looks like a still to me. 😂
I was going to say! 😂
Got to say that I think it would be better to start from new with a timber frame building
P.S. Is the workshop going to have a view of the water??
The workshop has many windows facing the lake which is only about 4 feet away from it, the old storage shed I’m rebuilding right now can also see the water from the door but there are no windows.
I would put a metal peak roof on It,be careful of old rusty nails
Do you find that you mentally explain what your are doing at times, even when not filming?
Hazmat
Yeah, I’m definitely not going to disturb the contents.
Chào bạn yêu ❤❤
Are you gonna get help from your family?
🤍💙❤️💖💝😇💜❣️♥️
Please wear gloves when you work, I saw so many exposed nails
Looks like he has sone on they are leather
😘👍👋💪🫶
