  • @DOMDZ90911
    @DOMDZ90911 5 месяцев назад +22

    Dips with appropriate form and range of motion do not hurt your shoulders. But if you have an existing or prior shoulder injury, dips will expose them. I tweaked my left shoulder doing heavy benching, and doing dips made it hurt more. The dips didnt cause the injury but it can cause discomfort. So be careful when doing them, dont go to extreme range of motion. Upper arms parallel to the floor is enough ROM.

    ChatG PT here. No, dips usually don't injure shoulders if performed correctly. When done with proper form, controlled motion, and within a safe range of motion, dips are a safe and effective exercise for strengthening the chest, triceps, and shoulders. However, it's important to avoid overextending or going too deep, which could place unnecessary stress on the shoulders. As long as you use good technique and listen to your body, dips are unlikely to cause shoulder injuries.
    To perform dips safely:
    1. Grip parallel bars, arms straight, core engaged.
    2. Keep chest up, shoulders back, and elbows close.
    3. Lower yourself slowly until your upper arms are parallel to the ground.
    4. Push back up, maintaining control.
    5. Inhale as you lower, exhale as you push up.
    Start with 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps. Warm up beforehand, avoid going too deep, and progress slowly. Focus on good form to protect your shoulders and build strength effectively.

  • @michaelcoppola7523
    @michaelcoppola7523 5 месяцев назад +56

    This is absolutely correct. My shoulders are riddled with dumb injuries, including multiple dislocations, and once i took the time to train for dips the right way (with bands for assistance) and started going deep, my shoulders have become rock solid. The more range of motion you get under load (the key being an APPROPRIATE load…) the better. Indisputable. So rest assured, you can most likely get your shoulders back in the game if you train smart and have patience.

    If you fear for your shoulders here are some tips:
    1. Train with shoulder specific exercises focusing on eccentric for 4-6 weeks prior to start doing dips (kind of borring things like front and lateral rises)
    2. Train your traps
    3. Warm up with: 2 sets of pushups + 1 set of pike pushups
    4. Control the eccentric phase of the dip
    Now you are ready to go as deep as you want

    Ive been doing weighted dips and overhead press over an year, mu shoulders are flexible and strong without any dangerous signs, a heavy Deadlift is more dangerous than a bodyweight exercise

    • @sauceman2saucyboogaloo530
      @sauceman2saucyboogaloo530 5 месяцев назад

      That's a curious way to word that, from what information I've gathered there is no specific form that is inherently dangerous, what is dangerous is exceeding the work capacity of the structures in your body, and some forms put more stress on the joints than others, but that doesn't make the form unsafe, just that the work capacity will be lower comparatively. That work capacity can be increased over time through graded exposure and regular backing off of the training volume. This matches my injury history as I've blown my back out jumping in to maximum effort 5x5 quarter squat sessions with a flat back, but I've had zero back discomfort when I built up gradually with deadlifts, despite deadlifting with a rounded spine.
      No disrespect my man, but I think it's not entirely true to say bodyweight exercises are inherently safer, it's just far harder to exceed the work capacity of your body with only your bodyweight.

    • @yewtewbstew547
      @yewtewbstew547 5 месяцев назад

      @@sauceman2saucyboogaloo530 _"what is dangerous is exceeding the work capacity of the structures in your body"_
      This is it. Pretty much any movement can injure you if your muscles, connective tissues and joints are too weak to support you through said movement. And a big part of resistance training is to address and prevent exactly that, so the last thing people should be doing is shying away from entire ranges of motion. All that will do is keep you weak and injury prone.
      With something like deep dips, if you're experiencing pain in the stretch position I think the solution is to just back off until you find a ROM that doesn't hurt, but then continue to try and gradually lower yourself more and more over subsequent sessions. As you get stronger, that point where the pain kicks in will become lower, until eventually it is just gone altogether.

    PTA here. Dips aren’t bad. I believe the thought process comes from learning about advantageous positions and disadvantages positions of the joint and confusing it with being bad or good. I remember asking my professor about upright rows and he said that he loved them despite the ‘elevation w/ internal rotation’ stigma.
    There were two levels of understanding to it. The “I won’t train it because it’s hard on the joint.” Then graduating to “I WILL train it because it’s hard on the joint.” It just makes you that much stronger.
    My elderly/injured patients don’t play by the same rules when I’m working on them because they often have very compromised stability but I’ve had those who were ready to graduate to a high level of training.

If you have joint impingement do not do dips, you likely have shoulder impingement if your body makes an angle instead of hanging straight down when doing chinups/hanging from a bar, or if you have to use excessive arch in your back to ohp. Dont find out that dips arent for you by training until you have an injury, access the range of motion in your shoulders first, if its not good then dont do them. Ignore at your own peril.

My surgeon even commented that dips probably was the reason my shoulders worked as long as they did ( started partially, then fully dislocating)
    My favourite thing to fully finish a workout ( I do weighted dips earlier in the workout) then go to the assisted dip machine. I flip up the pad to put legs on up, do free dips, then flip pad down and go straight into max weight pushdowns. 4 sets of those and I am done 😂

What I ended up doing that really helped was focusing more on the stabilizers, I did Dips on Rings, and ever since, my shoulders have massively improved. Id suggest working on slowly lowering yourself as deep as possible, and don't even worry about pushing yourself up at first, just keep slowly moving deep into the stretch, then step down, and repeat until you build confidence.
