Napoleon III had a very successful reign. He brought much prosperity to France and was the leading European monarch for two decades. Had France not list the Franco-Prussian War, the Bonaparte Family would probably still be reigning in France.

Napoleon I is always misinterpreted as some kind of war-monger, whereas in fact he was a liberal-minded 'reformer' who sought to get rid of all the ancient, corrupt hierarchies and dynasties - Venice, for example. He thought the only way to do this was by revolution and military conquest of territory. In short, he was an 'ends justify the means' person. He met his Waterloo because the 'old orders' he'd tried to vanquish did everything they could to re-assert their hegemony, and THEY were lucky. He was not.

Not true -he lost the Prussian War but earlier on he joined Britain in the Crimean war against Russia and won and then he helped the Italian kingdom of Sardinia defeat the Austrians in several battles like Magenta and Solferino. Solferino was the famous battle which inspired Dunant to found the Red Cross. As a result of Napoleon III helping Sardinia defeat the Austrians and unifying Italy the Sardinians had to give France Nice and other beautiful areas o-in the Provence/Riviera area and also the Savoy region in the mountains.

he wasn't terrible at war, he just got outplayed in geopolitics by none other than bismarck, one of the goats. he actually had no chance to win a 1 on 1 war against all the german states brought together, his army was literally 2 times smaller. the real incompetence there was his inability to secure even a single ally for that war. what he should have done was probably not count on britain in the long run, and try to buddy up with autria right before austro-prussian war (this one was a complete short sighted idiocy, he continued to antagonize austria over what was essentially an adventure in italy), or not destroy all prospects of a russian alliance against the germans by going into the crimean war (allthough you could forgive him for that since it was a whole decade before prussia started looking really really scary)
