Sheldon's questions about the half sandwich are perfectly reasonable. We do need to get these things properly defined. A "half sandwich" is not a true half sandwich, but a "faux half sandwich". Sheldon would not yet be able to properly recognize this particular case, except possibly after some time in his relationship with Amy, which was yet to come. To be clear, a "faux half sandwich" gets to be called a "half sandwich" for the sake of brevity. But, it does exist. The justification for the use of "half" is that it involves a single slice of bread that has been _cut in half,_ and then formed into a conventional sized "half sandwich."
