Your videos are truly beyond extraordinary. I received an offer from an MBB firm a couple of weeks ago and the amount of mental and practical preparation I've gotten from your videos is astounding. Thank you Heinrich! Best, a grateful viewer.
Hi Andrew, first of all big congrats for the offer - great achievement! Super happy to hear the videos have been helpful :) All the best to you! Heinrich
Thanks. Problem solving took the smallest share in this video; in my firm, it’s the most important factor (and the most stressful IMO) for levels below SM/PL/EM.
0:00 things to face: feedback session, evaluation process, and up-or-out principal. tough. pressure. half a year or sometimes even every quarter: a formal evaluation. people will think themselves, how did this person perform? 1:20 three criteria: 1:25 what a good vs. great consultant does different. 1. analytical ability how good to structure and solving problems. working with data and get insights from it. for junior, it means excel. 2:15 you're debating a problem. 2:40 what a good vs. great consultant does different. when answering a question, by providing an analysis: good: do exactly to a clean and nice analysis. great: one step further. in the middle of doing, he realizes, might need other data (might from client) to get a great conclusion. so do the action and finalize the result. 2. team ability 3:45 how do you contribute the overall success of a team. lone wolf or team player. to a positive and inclusive team atmosphere. don't complain on bad clients and work late. 4:40 are you reliable and get things done? 5:30 what a good vs. great consultant does different. good: will complete clean and do what team lead to ask you help the colleagues. great: one step further and do things proactively. 3. client ability lead client meeting, interview. also the documents shared during is evaluated. 6:50 build a trust relationship: makes clients want to work with you, trusted advisor, sparring partner. 7:50 build a relationship that both parties benefit, even till end of project. that new project and clients are be in future. 8:30 pick a person from a client side that you really would build a friendship further. write to this client six months or so.
It also depends on the culture imo. I worked in the UK for 3 years, now I have relocated to Germany in the same company but I would safely conclude that Germans are more demanding than British and sometimes it gets near to impossible to hit the target manager sets for you here in Germany 😁
Hi Yasemin, sorry to hear you made these experiences. This will of course also heavily depend on the culture of the business you work for.. Best! Heinrich
Hi Heinrich, another great video and lots of very useful tips. Have you considered writing a book that details all of the advice on being a great consultant? It would certainly be at the top of my reading list.
Hi Derran, thanks for the cool suggestion :) Actually already started writing one in the past, but then decided to create the RUclips channel instead ;) Best! Heinrich
Hi Moritz, usually the project lead will provide lots of input on that. Of course, partners will see you usually at least 1x per week as well and will also form their opinions. Visibility is important for sure. Best! Heinrich
Hi Heinrich - great vid, as always! Would you say you need to be "great" across all 3 of these metrics in order to get promoted at MBB firms? Thanks, really appreciate your thoughts on this 😀
Hi Ellie, thanks for watching and commenting on the video! In order to get promoted it is necessary to show growth and development across the firms evaluation criteria! I hope that this is helpful!
Hi, hope you're doing well! I have an option of changing my service line in my consulting firm. What are the parameters I should look at before opting and how can I make that look good till evaluations?
Hi Chhaya, the most important thing will be people. Do you already know the people from the new service line? Any chance to already connect with them beforehand and build your network? This will be key! Best, Heinrich
Hi Heinrich, can you please share your experience on how to ensure data is available in proper chart when client needs it? What are tricks to manage this chart type data? How regular would someone should refresh it? Guess a video would be good for this. This is helpful especially for anyone who needs to present regular data in periodic basis. Hope you can consider this suggestion. Anyhow, you make great impact on how I work. Thanks
About this video: very helful. Thanks for sharing. I surely will sharpen this all three abilities especially the team players’ abilities. Thanks Heinrich. Great video and great recommendations 👌🏼👌🏼
Thanks Fadira! You mean how to present data in a chart in the most effective way? Love the topic! Already created a video on creating great charts. Might do a follow-up in the future talking more about the different chart types. Stay tuned! Best, Heinrich
All jobs require the development of adequate technical skills to advance up the ranks. However, if the time to acquire these skills is absurdly long then one could always consider transitioning into a different job or industry! Thanks for watching!
I think being branded as a failing employee is very bad for someone’s confidence and wellbeing. Probably views on performance management depend a lot on what rating a person is given.

Could you recommend some certifications for a job in healthcare consulting?
Hi! Frankly do not know enough about healthcare to recommend certifications about the sector. Lots of success to you!! Heinrich
What if boss holds your promotion off because of technical capabilities which will take years to improve?
All jobs require the development of adequate technical skills to advance up the ranks. However, if the time to acquire these skills is absurdly long then one could always consider transitioning into a different job or industry! Thanks for watching!
