  • Landing a Falcon 9 in Spaceflight Simulator. After about half a dozen rapid, unplanned disassemblies, this is fairly reliable. Not the best landing of all the attempts, but it got down without crashing. But that's why you separate and try to land with 20% of the fuel remaining -- though if you stick the landing first time, you can do it with 16-17% remaining.
    The key is keeping the booster below 2-300 m/s to avoid burning up quickly, and then below 10 m/s for the landing, which is the tolerance for the landing legs. The Hawk engine is powerful enough to do this quickly, so it really can freefall until about 100 m from the surface.
