I feel like there's a huge exception when it comes to buying skill and that's red dots.... Shot irons for around 4 years and got good enough to feel satisfied with myself..... Almost a year ago I decided to purchase a Walther 4.5 " PDP to actually try out red dots on my own instead of trying others at the range here and there. Literally in just 1 days time the skill wall I was stationary at was completely broken and it was like I finally seen the light! It was like I was using cheat codes in real life and was actually a breath of fresh air that gave me the motivation to practice more and more and start attending training.

The Steyr M9a2 is awesome to shot if u get used to the trapeziod sights. Very high grip and the slide is kinda flat, so you even notice the recoil less / can manage it even better. My brother is owning one, i got myself a glock 17 gen4+. We are both from austria so we have to go with austrian pistols for your first ones. =P
You could Steve become much more comfortable halfway through which is great to see. All in all great Q&A. All this knowledge given I think I’m going with an XD lmao ;)
I disagree with Tritium. What I have noticed is when doing night shooting, if I use tritium sights with a weapon light, once I cut the light off, I can pick up my sights almost immediately after where it takes a good bit longer to pick up regular sights once I cut the white light off. It is a more limited use however I still prefer to pick my sights back up right away.
I bought a glock 23 gen 5. I put 50 tritium sights on it, and a talon grip. The gun is now good to go. The thing about pistol flashlight is it gives your assailant a place to shoot at. Where as if i hand hold a light i will hold it out and away from my and my body and head. This is prolly oldschool technique that my grandfather taught me. You do this because if theres a light on your pistol it provides a good target to shoot at if youre a bad guy. However I see the benefits of not having to hold the pistol one handed and shine a light and do 2 things at once. Ive been thinking of a compact light and laser on my pistol.
You don't need a laser. Modern high-candela pistol lights are so bright that the bad guy will hardly be able to look at them, much less aim at them. Skip the laser, get an X300 Turbo
I didn't realize how bad my grip was until I put a red dot on my pistol and couldn't find the damn dot without spinning the gun around fishing for the dot. I quickly discovered that my grip sucked. Since working on my grip finding the dot became easier and consistent along with my accuracy.
My duty weapon: G19 with an APEX trigger which is not that special other than having a more robust trigger safety tang. Trigger pull is still 6lbs. Brownells slide with Holosun HS507C circle dot. PERFECT fit. Blacked out suppressor height sights. Viridian Green laser and 100 lumen light module...optional strobe function. Not a cheap item at $350. Have had it for years. Robust. Lone Wolf Alpha Wolf fluted, nitrided barrel. Love it. Also: Safariland ALS drop leg holster modded to fit the HS507C My mod that actually helps me shoot better is the green laser because at my age shooting really WELL with irons is really hard. Astigmatism and 2.75 reading power. Just getting used to the red dot which is designed as my back up sight. Viridian laser is my Primary. I need to lighten the trigger to 4.5 to 5 llbs. Hot tip: BED your RDS with Tef Gel. BUY and install SS screws to mount your RDS on Amazon. The black oxide coated mild steel screws will rust from rain and sweat in a couple months. Use PURPLE low strength Loctite with the Gen 1 HS507C. You need to be able to remove your RDS with OUT a heat gun. Blue Loctite is only OK for Gen 2 HS507C which has the battery in a tray.
I would like to always keep irons on my handgun, glass and break, even 10 years from now, irons still don't take up too much space at all on a handgun and I would prefer not to have built-in red dots on a handgun, my 2 cents.
From my experience. With my glock 45 build, i put in a timney trigger, stainless steel rival arms guide rod and meprolight adjustable night sights. All those upgrades really did help with accuracy (still had to practice though) but the cross armory mag catch and slide stop help with functionality. Shooting idpa, all those parts were an advantage over the oem parts.
Speaking of FMJ and barriers: I was a final year dental student at the largest dental school in Africa (UWC in Cape Town, RSA) assisting a maxillo-facial surgeon registrar with a 14 y.o. male patient who got shot in the shoulder and jaw. He was referred to us from the hospital next door. Judging by the shitty hand tattoos he's probably in a Cape flats street gang. His story was that he was riding in a mini bus taxi with his friends to somewhere when a rival gang member shot at them. Probably a Norinco Type 54 model 213, they're very common here. The 9mm FMJ rounds went through the corner frame of the windshield of the mini bus and struck him in the shoulder/high chest area and in the jaw. Both bullets were intact without much deformation. The chest shot went through completely. The entry hole and exit holes looked pretty discreet. The one that struck his jaw was perfectly parallel to the inferior alveolar nerve canal on the left hand side of his mandible, resting just below the root apices of his teeth, stuck tightly in the alveolar bone (probably acted like a sponge/force absorber). We accessed the bullet by making an incision in the buccal sulcus and exposed the underlying bone, after which we rotated the bullet out using a Warwick James elevator, sutured him up and wired his maxilla and mandible together with the IMF technique. The force of the bullet, after passing through a vehicle frame, was adequate enough to fracture the angle of his mandible as the bone absorbed its force.
First thing I upgraded on my Glock 45 was the sights. Threw some ameriglo hackathorns on there. That’s what I recommend for most people. (I got tritium night sights bc I couldn’t afford a wml yet.)
My 50 yr old eyes appreciate a red dot. Right around 40 yrs old, I noticed it was more difficult to focus on my front sight. Also I feel like I can be more aware of the threat looking through a red dot, than I can staring at front sight.
I’m 42. Accepted the red dots on pistols with open arms lol. I’m military, so I’ll still have to train and qualify on the M18 with irons as well as sustainment training since I’m a firearms instructor, so I have no choice to stay proficient with them which is a good thing. On my personal firearms I have a RMR and a Delta Point Pro. I do a lot of drawing and dry fire practice at home with the red dots though to stay proficient with them as well, it took some practice at first to immediately pick up the dot, but second nature with enough practice.
Training with a milled optic gun will get you better at overall shooting faster than training with just irons. So many guys have trouble finding the dot when coming from irons. That just means they suck and can’t actually aim. Irons are blocky, slow, and not as accurate. It takes more time to decipher a decent sight picture than a red dot. When dry firing, someone with a red dot can get ample more reps in in the same amount of time because of the instant verification of the red dot over doing guesstimated eyeball measurements to ensure the front sight post is perfectly aligned right between the rear sight posts. Simply put you get faster and more accurate yourself because the dot is more simplistic and forces you to be more accurate.
I spent a lot of time dryfiring irons and making sure I had a perfect sight picture, once I started shooting red dots I had no problem finding the red dot and shooting with it. in my opinion if you have a good sight picture with irons then you can be equally as fast if not better with a red dot.
Tritium night sights with fiber optics are definitely very easy to see with a light on. I night shoot all the time, and if anything the weapon light amplifies the glow because of the open ports for the fiber optics. They end up capturing light from your flashlight and it’s a very nice combo. So if you want night sights, get tritium fiber optic combo! They’re great! Half life is also rated 12 years, not five.
I love fiber optics so so much. When it comes to the iron sight platform as a whole they are vastly superior to anything out..... But there's one thing DRASTICALLY holding them back and that's durability. I've wanted to transition fibers into my edc and defensive use firearms but sadly I've yet to come across "duty" worthy fiber optics. Fiber optics have a home only on the range toys sadly.
Red dot for older students. I attended a P.O.S.T. instructor course earlier this year where I was the oldest student, at about the same age as the head instructor. The small department where I work the lead instructor has been an “iron sights” only guy. I’m an above average shooter with good basic fundamentals and I performed well enough during qualifications to become selected as an apprentice instructor. While in the instructor course, it became apparent my eyes are getting worse as I no longer have clear front sight focus as all my sights and the target are a slight blur, even with prescription glasses. The head instructor of the school recommended a red dot due to my aging eyes. My lead instructor was attending the same course, as a refresher, and the head instructor of the class finally convinced my lead instructor older officers may need to transition to a red dot. My long winded way of saying transitioning to red dot may be out of necessity for older people, but you must continue to practice good basic fundamentals. Thanks for the video!
Massad Ayoob recommends against trigger modifications. Before I watched a video of him talking about it, I really coveted and wanted to get a new trigger system, "hair trigger", and all that but he said that can get you in a lot of trouble in a self defense shooting. So any gun that you're going to carry or could possibly use as self defense, probably best to stay away from that. For competition guns and all that that's fine
In most courts, they probably won't know what they're looking at anyway. If they do, it's on you to be able to articulate why each modification was made.
IMHO, the most important gun accessories one can have are a range pass and ammo to practice with. Without trigger time it doesn't matter what you put on/in your gun.
I became a good shooter when I was a teenager, I had a lot of trigger time. Now I got Excellent Muzzle Control, because the last thing you need is an Accidental Discharge 😁👍🏻
Never take for granted the fact that you can work with your brothers and cool, like minded individuals. I'm an only child and I work in healthcare.... I slide into work on liberal tears.
So I usually side with T-REX on most things in general but for me the order of OP's should be #1.reliable pistol #2.get 50-100rds of ball run thru it all then 25-50rds of hollows&repeat #3 get. As many GOOD MAGS that you can afford 🚫ETS BS😅 #4. Good nite/day hard sights #5. Ad grip texture/slight under cut/radius the magwell mouth...bonus pts #6. Replace all controls with better pieces from simple vickers/zev/strike industries all the way to full on titanium race parts lol
learning from the bottom and starting with the basics and stock OEM parts and master that and learn how to make the gun control function clearing and safty montions and habbits built and make using the weapon second nature so much your dont have to think about it and know how that fire arm functions. then start playing with your weapong by try sticking to one thing at a time and do them slowly so you can learn the new toys. plus it allows you to be able to enjoy the hobby more and longer and see more and understand more and have first hand experience.
I'm glad you're talking about this topic. I went cheap on optics, lights and other things and my biggest problem was destroying them on my AK. I stepped up the quality of my attachments and have had no failures. I run Stream Lights on all my AR's, AK's and pistols. The lights are Streamlight TLR-1 HL. Slings for all my rifles are Blue Force Gear 3 point. all my AR mags are PMags to no surprise. Magpul grips for the rifles and Locar for my pistols. For grips are ITach. I hate pressure pads! thay could get caught up in something then my light fails! I hope this comment helps other shooters. We are all in this together. If SHTF happens I need to know you have the right gear to cover my six!! I know I do! Do you?
Good video, I have one handgun with a dot and it took me about 500 rounds maybe a bit more to get comfortable with it . I was so frustrated! Lol I could hit better and faster with my irons out to 20 yards ,now I can hit faster and further targets with my dot practice, practice practice
36:06 Definitely get your eyes checked if the dot takes up the whole glass at max brightness. That shouldn’t be the case. Sounds like astigmatism issues
Been wondering about the opposite eye dominance. Good to hear we have the same right handed left eye dominant system. Thanks for the info! Going to watch your other vid about it.
The Steyr does have an aggressive grip angle and Triangle sights. But man do they shoot nice/flat. The sights are awesome once you get used to them. Do yourself a favor and try one.
One thing not brought up for red dots is sometimes irons are easier/better for people with astigmatism. I left the red dot behind awhile ago because with everyone I've tried it see three washed out dots(with every illumination level).
Streamlights are usually a better value for dollar than Surefires. Streamlight has more low end options Surefire and their high end options are less expensive than equivalent Surefire and of equal quality.
For my glocks, I just clean up/polish the stock trigger/striker so that it pulls smoothly and maybe just a tiny bit lighter, but mostly just smoothly. Grease it up and run the chit out of it.

Tactics are tactics, efficiency is efficiency, cover/concealment are cover/concealment, and angles are angles... Plenty of good instructors who have never been in the military. I've done a lot of classes with various ex Mil\LE members, but I'd 100% take instruction from Lucas any day
That would be sick!! Having a red dot built into a glock slide. You could make it where the recital is replaceable and drop in so you could still upgrade and adjust the elevation and windage but the frame of the red dot is all part of the frame for strength and durability.
This kid had convinced In his strong opinions but I can tell he had learned a lot for experience but u can’t discredit something with out a good reason, u do not have to spend $300 on a flashlight for your gun a O-light will get the job done perfectly, now if you have daddy’s money sure put surefire on everything u run!!!

I still don’t see a need for a light on my edc pistol. A light is used to identify your target, but you don’t draw your concealed handgun unless you’re ready to shoot it which means you’ve already identified the threat. Unless it’s your job to clear rooms in the dark like law enforcement I don’t see the need. If it’s a SHTF scenario then you would likely have your rifle out. If the only gun you have is the handgun and it’s your go to in the middle of the night by the bed then yes get a light.

Nice. Thanks for the info.
Hi! Im Brazilian and would like to say to congrats your videos and your job. Are the most professionals in RUclips. Tks!
I believe you would really like the M&P 2.0 compact. I have 2 of them. 1 is over 6k in rounds and the other just under 2k. They run well and you can find then for around $400 or less.
Heyo Lucas. Let's have a sleepover and play COD.
Chill, perv
That's not creepy...
Wtf
Pillow fort
Yikes the homophobic commenters need to chill.
I mean no disrespect when I say this but I truly respect the man to the right for clearing a new introduced handgun if not for himself or the camera man at least gives positive reinforcement to the public to always clear your gear
I love that these are all an hour plus, watching Lucas' behavior shift as he consumes more Reign is quality entertainment.
Got any thoughts on Target brand (Goodfella's) skinny jeans? I find they are great for concealed carry because the slight amount of stretch they have.
He’s so anxious that it’s hard to watch
dude stop wearing skinny pants. You're making us all look bad.
I haven't worn skinny jeans since 2009
The Steyr M9a2 is awesome to shot if u get used to the trapeziod sights.
When you buy a pistol, look for one that is red dot ready so you don't have to pay to get it milled later.
Wrong
@@Danefrak how
@@squidy4082 milling is better you get a lower red dot. Easier to cowitness without your sights being miles above the bore
@@Danefrak I agree but it’s not that noticeable , milling takes a lot of money and time also
Wrong.
It is always better to have a pocket milled for the particular optic vs using an MOS type option.
This is a very good point. In most circumstances, you will have enough ambient light that you should be able to see well enough.
I could see this being a valid technique back when flashlights were not much brighter than a candle
You don't need a laser. Modern high-candela pistol lights are so bright that the bad guy will hardly be able to look at them, much less aim at them.
Skip the laser, get an X300 Turbo
Please build the M&P 2.0 or Shields that would be huge!
I didn't realize how bad my grip was until I put a red dot on my pistol and couldn't find the damn dot without spinning the gun around fishing for the dot. I quickly discovered that my grip sucked. Since working on my grip finding the dot became easier and consistent along with my accuracy.
How to shoot a handgun in 10 mins is a great video :) gave me some good tips thanks.
Love it.
Also: Safariland ALS drop leg holster modded to fit the HS507C
My mod that actually helps me shoot better is the green laser because at my age shooting really WELL with irons is really hard.
I dont see the overwhelming advantage of red dots. Irons all the way!
@@damageace Irons on pistols should always be a thing
Fascinating write-up. Thanks!
Vary cool story, but now I am never going to get that out of my head when I go to the dentist
Cool story bro.
First thing I upgraded on my Glock 45 was the sights. Threw some ameriglo hackathorns on there. That’s what I recommend for most people. (I got tritium night sights bc I couldn’t afford a wml yet.)
This was a great video. Bummed I missed it live. I’d enjoy a pistol red dot comparison
My 50 yr old eyes appreciate a red dot. Right around 40 yrs old, I noticed it was more difficult to focus on my front sight. Also I feel like I can be more aware of the threat looking through a red dot, than I can staring at front sight.
I use aftermarket irons on my Shield Plus that are made specifically to lower 1/3 co-witness with my swampfox sentinel.
I spent a lot of time dryfiring irons and making sure I had a perfect sight picture, once I started shooting red dots I had no problem finding the red dot and shooting with it. in my opinion if you have a good sight picture with irons then you can be equally as fast if not better with a red dot.
just got my glock 18c and was cleaning iit and adding accceasories an kozt my spring
I liked the face of the guy to the right, when he checked a pistol that was on the table...and he saw live ammo in the mag...
The gun shop near me is selling m&p shields with sights on them already brand new from factory
Ameriglo Hackathorn sights. Blackout rear with narrow fronts for me made a huge difference in target shooting.
Fiber optics always break
He does indeed, and with his experience as a professional witness I am 100% happy to take his guidance on the matter.
In most courts, they probably won't know what they're looking at anyway. If they do, it's on you to be able to articulate why each modification was made.
IMHO, the most important gun accessories one can have are a range pass and ammo to practice with. Without trigger time it doesn't matter what you put on/in your gun.
Lol a range pass.
Would suck to not have infinite great places to just go shoot, close to home.
I love where I live lol
this video's making me want to go to my bag to get my Reign
I became a good shooter when I was a teenager, I had a lot of trigger time. Now I got Excellent Muzzle Control, because the last thing you need is an Accidental Discharge 😁👍🏻
Never take for granted the fact that you can work with your brothers and cool, like minded individuals. I'm an only child and I work in healthcare.... I slide into work on liberal tears.
It is just me or the image and the audio aren't synchronized.
1/8th of a second out of sync... :)
It’s cuz Lucas is faster than the speed of sound
So I usually side with T-REX on most things in general but for me the order of OP's should be #1.reliable pistol #2.get 50-100rds of ball run thru it all then 25-50rds of hollows&repeat #3 get. As many GOOD MAGS that you can afford 🚫ETS BS😅 #4. Good nite/day hard sights #5. Ad grip texture/slight under cut/radius the magwell mouth...bonus pts #6. Replace all controls with better pieces from simple vickers/zev/strike industries all the way to full on titanium race parts lol
Im sure they make a slide with a built in optic where you can remove the circuitry from the optic for warranty rather than have to remove the optic!
I know this , If I wanted to go learn how to shoot and manipulate my weapons is if they were body parts i was born with , Lucas Botkin is the dude.
learning from the bottom and starting with the basics and stock OEM parts and master that and learn how to make the gun control function clearing and safty montions and habbits built and make using the weapon second nature so much your dont have to think about it and know how that fire arm functions. then start playing with your weapong by try sticking to one thing at a time and do them slowly so you can learn the new toys. plus it allows you to be able to enjoy the hobby more and longer and see more and understand more and have first hand experience.
4:30 I expected you to say p10 but you actually dismissed it. What did you not like about it? Personally I am much more accurate & faster with it.
Do you?
Thank y’all for doing this. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Iron sights don’t snag but they will put holes in your shirts when you bump into things.
I am thinking that if we integrate the Red Dot in the front sight post would be a Bright Idea!
Good video, I have one handgun with a dot and it took me about 500 rounds maybe a bit more to get comfortable with it . I was so frustrated! Lol I could hit better and faster with my irons out to 20 yards ,now I can hit faster and further targets with my dot practice, practice practice
Running a canik tp9sfx with a flashlight and Taurus G2c stock as edc. Pretty decent cause i haven't had a malfunction in either of them yet..
Lol, sell them both, buy Glock or Mp. Now you have a real piece of mind.
@@JR-wo3sn i did. 🤣
James Yeager said if you stipple your gun. You need more training.
@@toddcarter156 I get it. Tell that to yeager.
Press checks as well
36:06 Definitely get your eyes checked if the dot takes up the whole glass at max brightness. That shouldn’t be the case. Sounds like astigmatism issues
Been wondering about the opposite eye dominance. Good to hear we have the same right handed left eye dominant system. Thanks for the info! Going to watch your other vid about it.
Opposite over here
The Steyr does have an aggressive grip angle and Triangle sights.
I think I also have astigmatism but glasses help alot
Have you guys considered doing a video on the difference of rear sights being placed in front of the optic vs behind for a carry gun?
Streamlights are usually a better value for dollar than Surefires. Streamlight has more low end options Surefire and their high end options are less expensive than equivalent Surefire and of equal quality.
true but I prefer the surefire switch setup over the streamlight switch setup
Ryan G , not equal quality, but Streamlights are definitely good.
For my glocks, I just clean up/polish the stock trigger/striker so that it pulls smoothly and maybe just a tiny bit lighter, but mostly just smoothly. Grease it up and run the chit out of it.
Lol. I love the slow taker vs fast talker.
Lucas- first off- youre the most attractive person thats ever existed. ALSO i could listen to you guys for hours - ive learned so much from this! its funny because earlier today i asked my cousin why he was buying a second magazine and you coincidentally answered with the 2 incidents where your shit flew everywhere from malfunctions. thanks for this:)
My 3 main upgrades for any pistol if I do upgrade are grip, gun lights, and night sights/red dot
Noob
Most Streamlights are manufactured and assembled in China, usually by the same factories that produce the "cheap" ones.
Military for shooting and tactics, I want REAL life shooting instruction. If I want a competition style shot, obviously I’d come to you guys at T-Rex Arms.
Tactics are tactics, efficiency is efficiency, cover/concealment are cover/concealment, and angles are angles...
Plenty of good instructors who have never been in the military.
I've done a lot of classes with various ex Mil\LE members, but I'd 100% take instruction from Lucas any day
I remember he recommended the Ghost Rocket connector at one point, does he still recommend them?
That would be sick!! Having a red dot built into a glock slide. You could make it where the recital is replaceable and drop in so you could still upgrade and adjust the elevation and windage but the frame of the red dot is all part of the frame for strength and durability.
Vp9 after a Glock. Capacity got better with the new mags
Yes indeed. Great shooting gun.
Thanks for making this video! Very great information. You guys are awesome!
I just bought one of your holsters right before watching this video, and now I feel like I need a different holster because I clearly need a light and one with a magholder rather than your basic one lmao
Get in touch with customer service, might be able to cancel the order or get something worked out, good guys over there. I have a light compat and a non light compat, I like it for the option but I never go without the light..
@@RBRfilmproductions already shipped oof they're fast! maybe I'll see about returning it or just keeping it for now and buying the sidecar/light holster later.
What optic mount are you using and does it fold out of the way when you fold the sub 2000?
Olight is also a reputable and lower budget option for weapon lights. Just want to throw my 2 cents in
This video is helping me a lot.
