I'm new to Fairlight, and you would not believe the trouble I had finding out how to edit an effect I'd applied to a clip after I'd closed the effect window until I'd seen this video. You so casually breezed over the "Open the Inspector..." and I had a moment of clarity. Thanks!
Awesome video. I've learned a lot about how to do sound editing from your videos over the past year. Each video you post regarding sound editing there's always something new I get out of it. I think this series is off to a great beginning, I look forward to watching and listening to the others in the series.
Hi Gayle! Yes I’m going to be doing more. Just super busy the last few weeks and also getting ready to teach a session at ResolveCon 2021 with Casey Faris! 😁👍 more will be out in October.
Great Format, I really like it. My thought on how to improve further: For my taste, the passing of the video is too slow, especially the beginning. When talk about the recording situation, it would be nice to have a screenshot or part of the video as reference. In future episodes, you will repeat a lot of setting again and again, so it will be interesting to see, how you tackle this problem. Maybe you can focus on very little very specific parts of the sound clip and apply a setting to it and just tell us what you did and why, instead of doing it on the fly. I hope you find that helpful and not offensive. Good to have you back from holidays. Stay save.
When playing the comparisons while editing, there were one or two times that I went "hmm...." but it definitely sounded clearer for the final comparison, and the guys were at a much more similar volume.
Jason, Do you have a video on how to remove background sounds in a voice-over like a breath before a sentence? I have heard of the Edit Selection Tool as a way to begin to deal with it. I cannot find that Icon. In the blackmagic forum the person suggests that it is to the right of the "Range Selection" tool. That tool in the free version of 18.1is the Focus Mode icon. Unfortunately in the Resolve 18.1 manual when one searched for "Focus Mode" or "Edit selection Tool" both come up with ZERO. In the end of the day I need to get rid of me taking a breath before I start talking again. Thank you
Hi! Yes, if you have studio, you can use voice, isolation. It should work perfect for that. If you don’t, you can use a gate which is found in the Dynamics panel of the mixer in fairlight. ruclips.net/video/H08721S3Z38/видео.html
I’ve never worked with adobe premiere and the audio tools they have there but from what I’ve heard even the free version a Fairlight is more robust than the basics in Premier. Fairlight is more comparable to something like Adobe audition.
Yup I have them. I agree, they are pretty good and some are better than the ones in resolve. For the series I’m trying to stick with only the options in Resolve since everyone has them. 😁 Thanks for checking out the video!
@@JasonYadlovski that’s fair, thanks. It would be great outside of this series if you can do more videos on why resolve crashes so often and how to rectify it, or mitigate it.
I hear that, not sure what’s up with all the crashing for people all the time. I work on a Mac and it rarely ever crashes on me. I’m not sure about your situation but I think for a lot of people their computers just can’t handle what they’re asking resolve to do. In general, from what I’ve seen and heard, there’s a lot more issues with PC versions vs Mac versions. Lots of times it’s graphic drivers (or other drivers) that aren’t updated. Sometimes is just user error too, 😜
Did someone ever make the mistake to use the delete button and break his entire project by doing so because it shrinks (for whatever reason)? I didn't notice and kept editing my project for several days. Now something is missing. Can I restore that or do I have to do it all again?
That’s happened to me too! The Delete key is to Ripple delete, backspace key will delete an item but not move everything else. You might be able to load a backup if you have it but then work might be lost. Best bet might be to make a copy of the project, then load a backup, copy out the part you need, then paste it back into the project. This is assuming you’ve got backups turned on.
I'd love to submit a project I'm working on for this, but it's a bit more complex than just a single audio track. I have a animation, with timed sound effects, and a backing audio track. However, the sound effects feel washed out by the Backing Track and I've had no luck balancing them...
❗ Tell me why DaVinci does not detect my JBL wireless headphones. I only work with speakers. I would still like to figure out why headphones don't work in DaVinci. In Premiere, I have no difficulty connecting 🤷♂
HI! Sometimes bluetooth headphones are a little bit of a pain to connect. Try going into preferences, System, Audio and Video I/O and change the speaker setup to manual. Then you should be able to pick your headphones.
@@JasonYadlovski An amazing miracle happened. I did absolutely nothing, just launched DaVinci and there is sound in the wireless headphones. WOW. Before that, I could not start the sound in the headphones in any way. A strange thing
@@JasonYadlovski it's funny because I want to add noise while your focus is clarity lol which is really what people thrive for too. think it's great we got our weekly video from you once again.
Levels are to high! Never should hit the red and the highest peak in a voice should hit -12 but be at -20. And the master output should be hitting-15 to -10. Nice job on the first video.
@@JasonYadlovski have tried bouncing the audio from resolve to iztope rx 8 to use the dialogue reverb? Fantastic plug in then save it right back to resolve in real time.
Oh nice, I haven’t tried that plug-in before. Is isotope free or do you have to pay for it? I’ll have to check that out and look into it a little bit more. Thanks for the info man!
@@JasonYadlovski I believe iztope rx8 advance is $1,000 program but well worth the money. I use 32bit audio so go from resolve to Adobe to iztope when cleaning up. And only use the eq and Compressor in resolve for dialogue tracks. Do you know how to bounce from resolve to other audio programs. I just learned how. Makes life faster?
Interesting, I have heard that isotope is an awesome program. But I’ve never used it. I don’t know how to bounce the Audio out, I could see how that would be helpful. Maybe one of these days I’ll see if I can download a trial.

Awesome, thank you so much for submitting a file, I appreciate it! I sent you an email to, make sure you check that out. 😜👍😁

Really good idea
I hope so! 😁👍 Little by little we are growing! 😜

Another very helpful video here, Jason. Thanks a lot.

What headphones do you use for editing audio?
Currently I use a pair of Sony MDR-V6 headphones. I bought them in the early 2000s, they were like $100 then.

Try taking a look at where your sfx track is hitting frequency wise and making a small dip in your eq for your back track in that same frequency range
