GR86 SME Catless Equal Length Headers In Car Sound

  • It seems like a lot of exhaust videos focus on exterior sound, but since you usually experience your car’s exhaust from the driver’s seat, I figured it made sense to get some video from this perspective.
The car has SME Catless 4-2-1 EL headers with 2.5” collector outlet flange that I picked up from Australia, a JDL 2.5” ultra quiet (high flow cat + resonator) front pipe/overpipe combo, and a gen 2 HKS Spec-L2 exhaust. I’m using a J-shaped O2 spacer from JCarParts with the medium insert, and no CEL after ~600 miles.
Overall, the car is a little bit louder than I’d consider ideal for me personally for daily use, but it doesn’t cross the line into obnoxious either. The volume level is great on the track, it’s loud enough that you can always hear what the engine is doing, but still quiet enough that you can hear fine from an in-car instructor/coach. It’s totally fine on the highway, I just made a trip to a track that’s 4 hours away from home with no drone or other issues. Cold starts are at the very limit of what I’d consider socially acceptable, right around 100dB. If it’s after 10pm or before 8am, I rev it up to 2k or so for the first 30 seconds to keep it from being obnoxious. I did bother including a cold start clip, because it’s honestly hard to tell how loud it is just from that, and IMO most setups kinda sound like generic boomy fart cans during cold start anyway.
There is some minor odor at start up from deleting the primary cat, once the secondary warms up any remaining smell is mild enough that it’s never noticeable under normal driving conditions, even windows down idling unless you’re in a confined space.
I’ll be doing a separate video on performance once I get it onto the dyno this week, and a comparison with the JDL UEL headers a couple weeks after that.

Looking forward to the dyno! Curious how the car feels, especially at top end. I don't worry about peak power, just high how in the rev range it makes it. Some of the dynos i see on UEL's show peak around 6700-6800, while EL show peak near 6900-7000.

I’m putting together a video on it now, should be up in a day or two! They performed well throughout pretty much the entire rev range.
