Best lap of the day but still left some time on the table! I can see from the videos I'm frequently using too much steering too quickly on initial turn in and delaying getting on throttle on exit in some places.
Overall, I’m 5s faster than when I was brand new with the car at the start of the year, so good progress! Hoping I can get into the low 1:20s next year.
Car is a 2023 GR86 MT
Suspension: Stock other than Vorshlag camber plates up front and SPC LCAs in the back.
Alignment: about -2.8 camber up front (right side slipped a little thanks to NYC roads on my way to the track), 0 front toe, -2.0 camber rear, 0.2 total toe in rear.

This is a 2023 GR86 MT with JDL UEL catted header, the JDL Ultra Quiet FP/OP 2.5", gen 2 HKS Spec-L2 catback, and a charcoal filter delete in the intake. I love the way this exhaust setup sounds. Zero drone. Zero rasp. Zero buzz. Perfect volume. Mild cold starts. Dyno scheduled for three days from now, video of that should be up in about a week! GR86 SME Catless Equal Length Headers In Car Sound

It seems like a lot of exhaust videos focus on exterior sound, but since you usually experience your car’s exhaust from the driver’s seat, I figured it made sense to get some video from this perspective. The car has SME Catless 4-2-1 EL headers with 2.5” collector outlet flange that I picked up from Australia, a JDL 2.5” ultra quiet (high flow cat resonator) front pipe/overpipe combo, and a gen...

GR86 Intake Sound Comparison: GR Cup Replica vs GR intake vs K&N intake

The cup snorkel from Outbound Motorsports was on the car for all of these. Vid shows moderate acceleration, 1st/2nd pull from a stop, and a 30-80 pull in 3rd for each intake. The car's exhaust is fully stock in these videos. Captured with an Insta 360 using its built in mic, so the sound is OK, but isn't going to reproduce what you hear in car perfectly. All three sound better in real life than...

Yup. I love it.
Did you end up getting the JDL catless header and do a dyno comparison to see if it make more/less power than SME header?
How did you tighten the nuts close to the overpipe? Space is pretty tight.
this video was amazing, love how he breaks it all down
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Please do a WOT pull with the windows up if you can.
Did you test the GR intake the way it comes with the charcoal filters still in there? I wonder what stock air box with no charcoal filter vs gr intake with no charcoal filter would do
I need to find a comparison with the JDL Catless with the rest of this setup
Absolutely GREAT video - keep up a good work
Holy smokes Charles! GR intake for the massive win! I was a 2016 Series.Hyperblue owner who spent far too much money on my car before (regrettably getting rid of it). Now here I am patiently waiting for the Hakone so I can start going crazy with it again! Big different is hunting down all the TRD/GR goodies as opposed to all my STI goodies I still have in my garage Seems like this GR Intake is a must have for the 2nd gen twins P.S. you're a godsend for all the work put into this video. You rock Charles!
Why did you say it was better leaving the small resonator instead of having the plug? Was it because you make more power with the small resonator? Or is it just less drone?
Thanks for making the video, Charles. I'm a little surprised at some of the results shown in the dyno graphs. For each change in hardware, how long did you run the car before testing it? i wonder how much time the car was given to learn and adapt to the modifications.
any dragy runs vs the sme?
still sounds pretty quiet considering theres a header, pipes and catback
Great testing here.
Those k&n’s are loud
How is your screen holding up to having that suction cup on it?
@@grippgoat I haven’t noticed any problems at all. Something heavier might cause issues, but the phone is light enough that it seems fine. There’s a little ring I have to wipe off after removing the suction cup, but I haven’t noticed anything else.
Why tf would you leave the window down when recording
My original plan before buying the 2022 brz was to supercharge. I have done that and it is fantastic.
uel may lose a few hp but the sound makes up the difference in my mind
I dig this sound. Do you get the pops and bangs on downshift with this setup (not a fan tbh)? Did you have to do any tuning or have any check engine light issues? I've been eyeing the Borla S type for my cat back setup.
@@Brokenandsilencedrec JDL uses high quality cats, so no CELs on the catted version. There are occasional pops on downshift, just like with the stock headers. The Borla S type is a popular choice, nice and deep 👍
@@Charles-ee5mm thanks for your reply!!
Is it my imagination, or does the K&N have more of that classic NA Honda type sound?
does that snorkel actually make much of a difference? I'm curious to get one, and I'm also curious if you've done anything to seal off the K&N intake more. I just got the K&N installed on my car and I'm concerned that the intake box isn't sealed as much as it should be.
I did a ton of extra sealing. I got thicker weather stripping to seal the top of the box, I put a ziptie inside the grommet where the intake pipe enters the box and tightened it down to seal it, and placed additional foam rubber around the opening to the box where the snorkel comes in to seal that. Before I did so, the car was substantially slower from 30-80mph in third gear (timed using Draggy) than stock. The snorkel is really just for sound.
@@Charles-ee5mmwhen you say extra sealing, do you mean just sealing it against the hood?
@@beterbarker No. I also mean sealing where the pipe enters the box, and where the snorkel enters the box.
No way!!! Recently just got my HKS Spec-L2 exhaust and was planning on getting headers! This sounds awesome! Question: Was wondering if your 86 through a check engine? Thank you
@@kbandzzz_86I did not get a check engine. If you get catless headers (or headers either a VERY low cell count), you will need an O2 sensor spacer to avoid a CEL.
@@Charles-ee5mm appreciate the help! One more thing, with the HKS exhaust + headers alone, it wouldn't be as loud as this where you have the JDL FP/OP as well? Cuz I know the HKS L2-Spec is almost close to stock sounding and the headers def boost it up a notch
@@kbandzzz_86 The OP/FP is slightly larger diameter than stock, so it probably increases sound level a little bit. The HKS is pretty mild with stock headers, the difference between it and stock catback is much more apparent once you swap headers out.
@@Charles-ee5mm appreciate it so much! Will be ordering the JDL headers !! I cant wait till you dyno the car and bless for making these videos !!1
also thanks for the feedback
What Exhaust are you using ?
@@johnnyhodges8620HKS Spec L2
thank you for the immense testing and insight! Looking forward to further testing!
Can’t really hear the rumble. Do you still have the pumped in noise active?
I have the fake noise disabled. The rumble is more subtle with the catted headers, but still very apparent if you compare them to EL.
How is the power gain with GR intake + oem snorkel?
I never dynoed it on the OEM snorkel. With the Outbound snorkel attached, I went from 207rwhp with the stock airbox to 220 with the GR airbox.
Importing a catted JDL UEL header to Germany would coat around 2.000€ + Would you say the sound is worth it?
K and n filter element only? Also, how long did it take for them to ship the inlet?
The K&N was the entire cai kit. I bought it used from another person, shipping times will vary from vendor to vendor.
great content man before i buy anything i try to do as much research as possible. On my gr86 i have a velossatech snorkel, no carbon filter, and grimmspeed post maf hose. I notice driving a bit more power, idk numbers and all that but it makes me happy. Those numbers with the gr intake box tho has me really contemplating getting one. Looking forward to future vids
Honestly deleting the carbon filter and adding a snorkel and post MAF hose is probably the performance and sound for the dollar champion. The GR intakes are unfortunately really hard to come by now. It seems like Toyota isn’t restocking them anymore. My theory is they are probably saving them for a special edition.
I need one!
so this is all without tune? am i right, that results would slightly improve once all combined with custom tune?
Correct, this is on the stock tune. I'm going to be getting a tune from CSG once I decide whether I'm sticking with these headers or the JDL UELs, and at that point I will dyno gain to show gains from the base map, and from the custom map after they provide one based on datalogging on both 93 and E85.
@@Charles-ee5mm You need to do a tune. I did Ecutek tune with PSR UEL and got 15Kw extra at mid range revs
@@RahulChandNice! I’m doing a custom remote tune with CSG. I’ll be posting an update with numbers on 93 and E85 once that’s done. They’ll be doing tunes for both the SME headers and JDL UELs for me to get a fair comparison.
Great content. Looking forward to the SME EL vs JDL UEL comparison.
Me too! I'm really curious to see how they perform side by side.
Thanks for sharing. Now I know it is very loud for my taste/usage of my gr86 :)
Glad it was helpful! If you want to stay quiet, sticking with the stock catback is probably the way to go.
Looking forward to the dyno! Curious how the car feels, especially at top end. I don't worry about peak power, just high how in the rev range it makes it. Some of the dynos i see on UEL's show peak around 6700-6800, while EL show peak near 6900-7000.
I’m putting together a video on it now, should be up in a day or two! They performed well throughout pretty much the entire rev range.
Nice driving overall. If I might suggest something, I would recommend short shifting to fourth at the apex of turn 11 (the curbing on the right) and shift again to fifth before you get to 6K RPM. That way you are maximizing the torque band and realizing more straightaway speed. My two brothers were out there with you. One in the STI and the other in my blue BRZ.
Thanks Glyn! Which gear to use in turn 11 complex onto the straight was one of the things I was trying to figure out all day. I’ll definitely give that a try next time I’m up at Thompson. I saw your brothers out there, it looked like they were having a good time!
The STI was getting a shakedown after being rebuilt, almost bumper-to-bumper, except for the rusty gas tank that sprung leak on the track.
@@escargod I thought I smelled gas when I was behind it at one point… I was wondering if it was just running super rich at some parts of the rev band, but a leaky gas tank would explain it! I wouldn’t have guessed that it was rebuilt looking from the outside, looks like you did a good job with it!
Nice video! Rear camber is also uneven my car from factory.
So did the cup snorkel increase induction noise?
My son and I were at this same event, what a blast!
Wow, i didn't realize the K&N was that apparent. I know it seems like a silly question but is the K&N your most preferred from an in person experience? Appreciate the video!
I definitely liked the sound of the K&N the best. I’m pretty sure it performs comparably to a stock setup with the carbon filter removed, so if you’re willing to put in the effort to make it seal out hot air well, and sound it your first priority, it might be a good choice.
Great job with the sound clips and testing!
Nice! Been looking at getting the outbound motorsports kit, K&N definitely sounds the best in this vid though! It’s more than twice the price however… Did you have the sound generator unplugged filming this?
Yep, ASC was disabled in this, so the sound is all from intake/engine and the stock exhaust.
How snorkel with k&n sound ?
@@tareqshihabts The Outbound snorkel was installed with the K&N in this video.
Do you know if it is suggested to do a tune with aftermarket intakes on this car? I read that the stock intake resonator box is not just for sound deadening, but also something to do with the air turbulence/pressure for performance. I love the sounds of these aftermarket intakes but I'm hesitant if its worse for the car
Tuning generally isn’t needed unless you’re doing something like altering the size of the tube the MAF is in. The MAF sees how fast air is flowing, and the ECU does some math to compute the amount of air flowing in based on the speed of the air flowing by the MAF, and the volume of the pipe the MAF is in. As long as you’re not doing something that changes the relationship between the velocity of air flow and the volume of air flow, the ECU will compensate for any extra flow automatically. It’s not in this video, but I did test acceleration with the resonators in place, and the performance was effectively identical to the cup replica/hks pipe setup in this video that has both resonators deleted. If anything, I was tending towards getting slightly faster acceleration with the resonators deleted, but it wasn’t a meaningful difference (a couple hundredths of a second at most). In the GR Cup race cars, Toyota removes both resonators from the intake. Between that and my acceleration testing, I’m about 99% sure they do nothing for performance.
