On the same day as a performance on Top of the Pops for the Whatever single, Oasis returned to Maida Vale Studios for the BBC Evening Session. Broadcasted live in front of a small studio audience filled with competition winners, this little session features only one song from the Definitely Maybe album, the rest of the picks however are particularly interesting. Firstly, to kick start the set we have the first ever known performance of (It’s Good) To Be Free. A b-side from the Whatever single, it strangely wasn’t part of the set at all in 1994, and would only start being played in the new year. Next is Married With Children. The main difference to this one is the fact Liam sings the correct lyrics to the first verse (up to this point the “so sarcastic” verse was done twice on every 1994 version).
Noel has his time to shine on Sad Song, and what follows it is the first ever performance of Talk Tonight. Written during the time Noel fled to San Francisco earlier in the tour, this delicate number is the first song to come from the Morning Glory era to be played in front of an audience. He’s a bit unstable singing it at first, but as his voice strengthens over the years, his performances of the song get better and better. Whatever follows, and includes Liam doing the All the Young Blues part, and of course the strings. I Am The Walrus has the same arrangement with the strings and the rest of the band, playing a great 8-minute version before ending off the set. Having a studio audience helps with the ‘live’ aspect of this, and the odds and ends setlist of this is really fresh, and an incredibly enjoyable listen.
Setlist:
(It’s Good) To Be Free (first performance) - 0:00
Married With Children - 3:23
Sad Song - 5:50
Talk Tonight (first performance) - 10:15
Whatever - 13:48
I Am The Walrus - 19:24
