The truth! Fluent in 30 years! I am a native English speaker aged 57 and one of those people who took part in that test, and so it's great to finally see the end result in the form of a simple graph. Of course, I scored highly and so you may guess that I do not watch your videos because I need to reach fluency in English! However, I am now 2.5 years into the study of the Polish language, which is a seriously daunting task for any native English speaker to undertake. I watch your videos because the information that they contain applies to the process of learning all languages, regardless of which one it might be. The rules of the game remain the same and you are telling me the brutally honest truth about them. I must knuckle down, enjoy every second of the process and most importantly of all, I must take my damn time about it! The industry of 2nd language acquisition (and especially for the English Language) looks utterly corrupt to my eyes, and it seems that almost everyone involved is selling nothing more useful than snake-oil. At last, we have an honest voice. Wonderful stuff!
Hi! My name is Leszek, I am 56 years old, I live in Poland and I have been studying English for three years. Maybe we'll talk in Polish and English to study together.
How interesting! Polish is such a beatiful-sounding language! Was that your reason to take it up? Snake-oil never goes out of fasion, in all its various forms, haha!
It is so true! When I have imagined conversation in my head it seems so easy but when I start dialogue in real life (in so rare opportunities) I get confused and all the words magically disappear from my head. And all this because of lack of conversation experience in English. Thank you sir! I said it before but want to repeat it again you are really amazing teacher.
That's exactly what happens with me. Everyday I listen to hours and hours of english podcasts about movies and I sincerely understand something around 90% of the words and sentences. But when it comes to talk ordinary things like in conversations, I freeze and the words disappear from my mind.
To me, learning English was/is a life long process. I'm 55, I've started learning English 50 years ago. I've been working as a translator from Eng into my native language for 30+ years - and I still have a lot to learn. I love your videos, and the way you explain things... keep up the good work! :)
I am 59 and I am Russia teacher. I ve already teach Russia for more 30 years y sometimes I doubt. I absolutely agree with you. Thank you for your so interesting lessons.
I started learning German on my own just over a year ago when I was 61 years old. I'm making progress every day. It's not likely that I have 30 more years to learn German. But, it is encouraging that you graph shows that learners can reach over 90 percent accuracy in just a few years, well within my remaining life expectancy. I think that you should highlight the fact that only a few years is needed to gain a high level of proficiency, rather than repeatedly emphasizing the rather demotivating fact that 30 years is needed for maximum fluency. Thirty years to maximum fluency may well be the rock hard truth, but I, and most others, don't need maximum fluency. If, in the next 5 years, I reach 80 or 90 percent fluency I will be able to have conversations in my target language, German, on almost any non-highly-technical topic of common interest. That is highly motivating. Thanks again, Christian, for a bit of language learning inspiration.
Very nice video. I'm studying English about one year, I'm brazilian, and I'm felt realy better when you showed me that I can get fluency in 30 years, instead 30 days. Thank you.
Hi! I totally agree! Sometimes people think that learning language is a miracle or some special methods! But it`s just hard regular work! It`s pleasure to listen to You!
I totally love this, in my country there are many companies promising fluency in 9 months and in reality I know that's not possible, I spent 3 months in Canada, and when I came back to my country I kept learning, 20 years later, I'm still learning, I have some fluency but not like a native and I have worked in call centers offering products to English speakers, so I consider that some immerision, and here I am, still learning. As always great video. Thanks teacher.
Great videos Christian ! I am English, and a native speaker ( who doesn't always get it right ! ) . I am 67 and currently learning Italian and Portuguese, albeit slowly . During the time I was at school 1957-1967 there was no grammar teaching ( I went to primary and secondary schools.) The gov't had ceased the teaching of it. Your video's are teaching me my own grammar whilst helping me learning Italian and Portuguese grammar. Thank you. Keep 'em coming !
I remember when I was a basic user of the English language, I would always come here, watch your videos, cry, smile and learn a lot. I'm coming back, and feeling the same stuff. Your work is amazing, sir.
Thanks a lot Christian, I've been working on this somewhat called 'active learning' for a month. And I felt like I was learning a lot, but truth was, native speakers know 45000 words to 160000 words. There's no way that I'll 'study study' to get all those words. So I was a bit frustrated. But yeah having knowing the fact that it's gonna take a long long time, kinda gets me more relaxed and just to enjoy the things in English. That way my emotion will be connected to it, and therefore I will possibly speak good English in the future.
Wowww!!! That explains now my 27 years learning the language!!! Yes, it is totally true!!! Christian is a hundred percent right!!! I'm fluent now and I have always thought to myself, "How blockheaded I really am to be able to speak a language fluently in 27 years!!!", ha ha ha...
I've been trying to learn English for about 10 years and I continue keep going learn and trying. Even now and then I stop and try to change the approach and looking for a good way to memorize or learning. Finally I realized that the best way is only learn by speaking. That's the true. Unfortunately I don't have how to do this, but if I learn at least listening and reading that's will be enough for me.
There is always a chance, and that's it through on-line classes with native speakers. I´ve been having them the last six months and my fluency improved significantly! Now i wonder why i didn't do this a couple of years before...
This video is an eyeopener for me.I am tired of false hopes given by some of the youtubers about learning English. You are very genuine. Be like this, dont change.
This is the most inspiring video about English learning I've ever seen! Thank you, Christian! I've watched a lot of your stuff and found it all amazing but this one really touched me. Now I feel I'm on the right way and all my efforts make sense. Thank you!
I've surfed the web for years triyng to find the best material to learn English until I found your videos! Thanks for your great material and now I can stop searching the web!
This is the truest truth of all time in learning a second language. There really is no achievement without much work and dedication. Thanks for the great video and great work.
Comfort is the enemy! I saw haha. This is amazing 2 years following you, and still is the best. Very cool music all the time, landscapes, very good lessons, all the details you put into your videos I can see your passion. Greetings from Brazil
Congrats! You are so didactic. You show the truth and I feel better now about my English level. Learning English is a project for all life. A wisdom man said: It's better to travel hopefully than to arrive". And so did I. Greetings from Brazil!
Hi Christian! I'm from Russia. You're a very good teacher and I really enjoy watching your videos! The most important for me in your video lessons is that I understand what you are talking about and it really inspires me. At such moments I think that my listening skills are good but I know it isn't so. I also want to say that your video lessons are so interesting. I'm gonna to continue learning English. So, I want you to create much more video lessons.
I am so English speech hunger. I just realized i have been enjoying your videos at the same time I've been learning without any effort. it gets me calm to know i dont need to speak like a native english speaker and still im so english speech hunger. 🤔🤔28 more years to get the top of that mountain 😉😉I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH.🏞⛰⏳⏳
Chris, YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR VIDEOS SUBTITLED IN PORTUGUESE. Why? So much bullshit going on in Brazil whilst TEFL, ESOL, EFL, and so on. All your videos concerning Linguistic points, fluency, accents, native speakerism, non native speakerism, etc, are pure gold and I'm showing them to all my peers, students, everyone I can. I believe in everything you say. Cheers mate, you made my year.
The quality of your videos is really amazing. As a teacher, I am getting lots of ideas while discovering your channel. Thank you for the interesting data and scientific approach!
This is probably the single best video Canguro English video I've seen yet. Thank you Christian for the insight. I have much to talk to my students about this week. In my teachings, I've been promoting the need for my students to do as much as they can to immerse the English language into their daily lives as the most effective way to acquire fluency. These insights are sure to help. BTW, I am 49 and the start of my English learning was probably 10 years old. It has been a long journey but it's never over. English is endless, and with so much to offer, everyday is a new beginning.
Yes, it's so true, we can't be fluent in English in many days, we need to practice English every day and after many years we can say we are fluent this language
You did an amazing job reframing the harsh reality of a language learner to a more positive perspective with the mountain analogy! I will certainly remember that hahaha, thank you!
Very honest and from the heart. I believed that you learn till about you know 85%, then everyone will understand what you say, even if its not perfect, but wont tell you if you made a mistake.
That graph is also encouraging because it shows that native and non-native speakers can reach 96 percent accuracy in only 5 or 6 years, not 10, not 20 not 30.
Thankyou sir, I realized something important in my language learning process. Im getting frustrated as I urge things but now decided to relax and make language learning in a fun way.
Hi Christian - great stuff & personally thrilled to see the very curve that I've been drawing for students for the past 20 years in your video . Best ones from Hamburg, Will
What a great video, Christian! There's nothing as learning a language, in the sense of learning to ride a bicycle or to make a cake; we have to create kind of a second biography, more or less closed to a complete lifestyle (immersion) or not (the daily little contacts with it). Truth is really important, there will be no more desperation, only a slowly but steady progress - never give up! Thank you for the honesty!
Christian: Do you want to become fluent in English, quickly, easily, and without effort in just 30 days? Me: Yeeeeeeeeeeah! Chrsitan: Hahahahahahahaha... Thank you... I enjoy your videos! Go ahead!
Grazie grazie Christian per tutto quello che ci insegni... i tuoi insegnamenti sono la linfa della vita per chi vuole imparare l’inglese... grazie ancora per tutto quello che fai per noi!!!
Hello Christian, thanks for your sharing, it motivates me. I have started learning English since i was a child. I hope i can keep learning until i can speaking English fluently.
Shamalshark 30 years to speak as an educated native , naturally , with a good accent , great vocabulary , good grammar , good command of slangs , to be able to read complicated texts with the same understanding level as a native.... great acting, I laughed a lot 😂 I see these types of videos a lot, some unqualified teachers show up and say "I am gonna teach you English in 2 week, if you give me enough money" or sth. I totally agree with your saying about climbing to the mountain. Expanding vocabulary is the most time consuming part of language learning process. And no-one can expect to acquire a language in a short period of time. This was the first video I watched and I loved it. Thank you!
Hello from Brazil. Nice information Christian. So, the more important to understand in this resource is that we have to enjoy it all the learning process. I like to watch your videos because all of then have a lot of good information about this hard process of learning a new language. Thank you.
I hope you'll read this message, Thank you for all the videos you did and for all the videos you'll do. With your help i'm increasing my english that's because you don't explain grammar rules but the method to learn. I feel really lucky to have found you.
Christian, thanks for the great analogy! It helps fantastically much to look at the process from another angle. And this angle is so exciting and offers so nice perspective))
Thank you so much Teacher Christian. After I saw this video, I am so encouranged, relaxed and motivated to keep on practicing in English in every skill bec I have a lot of time 30 years to get the fluency peak. I will try to never give up.
I think what you said about immersing, and surrounding yourself with English is really true. This is so that you can familiarize yourself with the language, and overtime speaking, writing, and even listening will improve. Just remain patient and love what you do.

How interesting! Polish is such a beatiful-sounding language! Was that your reason to take it up? Snake-oil never goes out of fasion, in all its various forms, haha!
You have touched on a important problem. Today people don't care about the process, they want to arrive the top of the mountain without effort.
But unfortunately no pain, no gain.
But precisely he pointed out if we take the fact that we couldn't get anything without effort, then we will be able to free from pain and stress :)
Great
Eliana Benedetti And once at the top, then what? Christian could be my zen teacher too!

Valter Júnior 😜
Dammit bro, you just motivated me you don't know how much. May I ask you, why it had taken you so long?
😂😂
That video says you will never be as good as a native speaker. It's impossible. And that's ok.
Only 6 years now :).
Very nice video.

"Comfort is the enemy" very good 👍
This video was amazing. No words. I like so much when people tell the truth.

In my opinion, the best video I've seen of yours. Thank you professor!
That was the most realistic content about leaning english as a second language.

Yes, it's so true, we can't be fluent in English in many days, we need to practice English every day and after many years we can say we are fluent this language
Best thing ever is to dream in different languages. Its like the ultimative proof the learning process is progressing
You did an amazing job reframing the harsh reality of a language learner to a more positive perspective with the mountain analogy! I will certainly remember that hahaha, thank you!
I love the way the music comes in from 7:49 and blends into the background.
Christian, I love your classes. You are very funny.
Very honest and from the heart.
I believed that you learn till about you know 85%, then everyone will understand what you say, even if its not perfect, but wont tell you if you made a mistake.

Awesome, I have just subscribed your channel, and thank you for made this academic video, and have great time. Hello from Singapore. .......💚

Chris, you do a brilliant job in this channel.
Thankyou sir, I realized something important in my language learning process. Im getting frustrated as I urge things but now decided to relax and make language learning in a fun way.
Hi Christian - great stuff & personally thrilled to see the very curve that I've been drawing for students for the past 20 years in your video . Best ones from Hamburg, Will
Excuse me, I enjoyed listening and seeing this video without subtitle, it improves our listening comprehension.
Awesome and powerful video and vidoleo's maker. Thanks Christen.
Go ahead!
Awesome!! Many thanks!!!

Hello Christian, thanks for your sharing, it motivates me. I have started learning English since i was a child. I hope i can keep learning until i can speaking English fluently.
30 years? Many of us will not live so long to be fluent.
Shamalshark 30 years to speak as an educated native , naturally , with a good accent , great vocabulary , good grammar , good command of slangs , to be able to read complicated texts with the same understanding level as a native.... But to be able to speak , understand and comunicate with natives , and read normal texts like novels , and normal everyday conversations , or the news ... the time you need to become a proffident speaker is shorter
Then i'm run down...i've been studing for 5 year, it takes another 25 years to get to thirty
Actually, you don't have to be fluent.
Simply amazing!!
A man with greatest thinking for students
a truly beautiful and wonderful video
great acting, I laughed a lot 😂
I see these types of videos a lot, some unqualified teachers show up and say "I am gonna teach you English in 2 week, if you give me enough money" or sth.

Thank you, Christian! :) Truth is the most important thing
I think what you said about immersing, and surrounding yourself with English is really true.
This is so that you can familiarize yourself with the language, and overtime speaking, writing, and even listening will improve. Just remain patient and love what you do.
To work, to be patient, to practise and you'll be fluent. That was my experience.
Absolutely yes! So now you're fluent right?
