Yeah but he meant videos that are about English, e.g. "10 different ways to say thank you" etc.
RUclips videos that are in English and about whatever topics you like to watch videos about are fine, I don't think Christian meant those.

I got fluent in English just by watching RUclips. Thousands hours of input in a target language is the best way to learn it. You just need some base vocabulary to get started with it, but once you can understand videos, learning becomes free.

Science doesn't support your claim. What science tells us is if you listen things, you'll be better at listening. If you speak in English, you'll be better at speaking and so on. You can't be fluent only by listening, you have to use the language. That's the whole point of this video.

Hi Christian. My name is Mike Woods and I am an Australian English teacher working in Taiwan. Your video is a breath of fresh air. I totally agree with you. A long time ago I arrived at the same conclusions. Teaching English is an industry, videos, books, magazines etc etc etc. It all makes money. This does not mean that online teachers are bad people. Only that they fall into the same pattern as everyone else. When my students tell me that they must learn grammar I ask them two questions: "Could you speak Chinese when you were seven years old?" They always reply, "Yes, I could." I then ask them, "How many grammar lessons did you have BEFORE you were seven years old? They just look at me and cannot answer. There are so many questions, like this one, that a teacher can ask a student to expose the truth of the situation. So, good luck, keep going and I wish you all the best for the future.

Hi Christian, I don't agree with your claim to stop trying to learn English via youtube. I am a 72 year old Italian who loves to know languages. When I was young in Rome the war had just ended and there was hunger. For me there was no possibility to study, and even less to study languages. I am now retired and have been in Kenya for about a year where I tried to learn the local language (Kiswahili) and the official language (English)
Since I discovered your channel, thanks to you, I have learned a lot. Now I'm back in Italy and I take advantage of your help. What I like most is that your "lessons" are like conversations because your way of dealing with linguistic issues is engaging ... I am intrigued and make the topic absolutely interesting. Now I have returned to Rome and I have no opportunity to practice or converse in English, for this I must thank you for the help and the company you offer me .... Yes Christian I have not used an inadequate term. You offer me company, education and every day intriguing points of view on learning methods.
Happy New Year and thanks again.

You should have a great conversation with friends around the world is the best way to learn English and I disagree just with one thing when you watch and listen to youtube channels in English you increase your vocabulary and listening skill, but you don't have to watch just the videos where people teach you how to learn English you try to see funny videos like the Ellen show or interesting videos like TED Talk, learn a new language is an amazing experience and enjoy the process is the most important thing.

I Couldn't agree more with these 9 tips albeit I would like to precise that the first tip, in my opinion, it's only should be related to youtube videos about learning English, instead I think that is really good watch RUclips videos about things that you are interested.
For instance; if you like some group of music, you can watch videos with interviews to the group, reports about their songs, etc. If you like football, bikes, nature, travel, history, animals or whatever you like then watch RUclips videos about it.
Anyway, thanks for these pieces of advice so good.

Most English courses are designed to capitalise on people's lack of autonomy. They purposefully discard critical thinking because tycoons are interested in protecting the sanctity of their products. When people realise that language is not a commodity but a vehicle to transmit their most fundamental human emotions and ideas, then they will truly grasp the importance of learning a language.
Christian, you're absolutely brilliant. I'll definitely share this video with my pupils.

Hi Christian. Merry Christmas. I’ve just done an IELTS exam. That was terrible. Sadly, I lost my motivation and determination in the middle of this torturous experience. In speaking part the examiner asked me some questions about. Please take a look at them to find out what I am saying:
    1. That is different between meal that people in your hometown eat from south to north? (Task 1)
    2. Talk two minutes about a famous dish that people in your country eat in a formal occasion? Why you consider it as a spacious dish? ( task 2 )
    3. Definition of food has changed over the 20 years? ( task 3)
Christian even in my native language, I am not capable of responding these question let alone in English.
In reading part they gave us 3 difficult passages to evaluate our comprehension. This is unjust.
And the worst part was listening a speaker who was speak like a chatterbox and in a unintelligible way, intending to mislead us and distract us to answer question wrong and I believe they enjoy deceiving us. How can I pass this exam. I am a language keener and my goal is to move and resettle overseas in a English speaking countries to follow my dreams. I don’t know why they place a lot of obstacles in the way of my development, but I never give up on my dreams. Please tell them. I work single_mindedly to accomplish and nothing will stop me. Practicing! That’s the magic word to learn English, what we’ve been doing when we were child to learn our language to communiques with others people around us? That’s it! Definitely I guess that my English is better than what I think is, unfortunately I have very few people to speak up with, never give up your goal! That’s my own secret. Have a great 2020 !

Hey Christian - I am a native English speaker and MAN I love this channel.
If you have time to reply, I'd appreciate if you could tell me where the science says the 30 years thing? NOT because I disagree with you, but rather because I AGREE with you. An American was recently trying to tell me that Belgians speak English as well as any native speaker. When I tried to correct them on this idiot statement, saying that speaking English well does not equal speaking it like a native, they STILL pushed back and cited all sorts of irrelevant info, like the fact that the kids start it at 7 years old. (Like, yeah... 7 years after native speakers.)
So I'd be interested in reading a paper that supports the 30 year thing. At 33, I would say my own English is still improving.

I agree with everything except tip No.1. It works very well if you not only watch videos, but retell it in English in your own words.

I think that my watching RUclips is so unsystematic. My plan in 2020 is lessons with native speaker from Italki. I will embed new words and expressions in my speech. Otherwise all my study is usefulness. You are very good teacher! Happy to listen you !

Dear Christian, thank you for your honest video. I´m an adult learner of Spanish, however your videos about language learning apply to all and are absolutely inspiring - apart from the bit that it takes 30 years to master a language :P Feliz día de Reyes and all the best to you for the New Year!

Hello. I'm new to this channel, but I love to learn and I already enjoyed the few videos I've seen. I have a suggestion for you: since you are teaching English and you are using English as the language to do that, it would be great if you could add subtitles to your videos, so that people who have difficult to understand what you are speaking can confirm by reading the subtitles. Automatically generated subtitles aren't always reliable, so manually added subtitles are the best option.

I loved this video, when I tell my students that it took me 12 years of studies and practicing, and even spending 6 months in Toronto, and it was difficult, their reaction is like...really? and I´ve been teaching for 6 years and I'm still learning... when I tell them that they need to practice, talk , talk and talk. they get all confused because all they know is grammar.
