Daihatsu Fourtrak Restoration Pt4 - Chassis Rebuild
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 8 фев 2025
- Last time you saw me strip the Fourtrak's original chassis back to bare metal before carrying out a host of repairs and giving it a brand new protective coating. That left me with a huge pile of rusty, tired looking parts which all needed to be restored, repaired or replaced before they could be put back onto the now fresh chassis.
In this 4th instalment of the Fourtrak restoration series i will do just that - make all of those parts as good as (if not better than) new & then rebuild the chassis ready for the next stage; The engine & gearbox!
Grab a cold one and enjoy!

This isn't a restoration, it's a "make it far better than it ever was" Very late to the party but loving this build. 👍
sensational work me unable to take my eyes of the screen staring intensely like a child watching their first ever magic show I mean hell most channels would make a whole video out of just one of the parts that you restored with impresive eye for detail at that damn my coffee has gone cold ah well thank you for such excellence to sit here and look at this build as you restore it from the ground up its like every mechanics dream to pay this kind of attension to their own car but most end up working on their customers freinds aunties or uncles car while their own languashies in a state of disrepair held together with zip ties truly inspiring and with summer just around the corner I have renewed vigor to finish some unfinished work on my own car :)
Thanks very much Michael, I’m so glad you are enjoying the series so far! Next up: engine and gearbox - stay tuned!
Have to say mate, your fabrication skills are superb,
Those brake back plates are little short of amazing,
So pleased I found your channel,
Thank you, I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
Awesome fabrication solutions! Better than new all round!
fourtrak man now myself got a ultra low mileage indy 2001 done the chassis shot blasted done loads of work on the old girl
fantastic job you did on the back plates mine are the same as yours were ... bugger now iv got to copy what you did and must admit was very impressed with your solution ... cheers for the idea wish you had made to lots
Awesome! What’s the mileage of your ’Trak? I’ve sold some low mileage corkers over the years…should’ve kept a few! Yeh the back plates are a tough one because I just couldn’t source replacements so fabrication was the only option. I hope you manage to get it sorted 👍
@@JohnnyGetsCash mines now on 42k genuine miles bought it with 36k one owner ... got the pepper pots on mine refurbed them running bfg 31 10.5 15 absolutely perfect without lifting it 2 pack painted in jcb yellow as I run diggers for a living mines a grey fourtrak and with the yellow wheels always get comments did the sills in box section ..... had to buy a 4tonne 2 post lift ... then bought a 2 motor single phase compressor 270lt plus another air tank 270lt .. shot blast pot ... took all the seats out the back as I use it just for my 2 dogs ... fitted some bmw seat out of a 2017 120bmw coupe with manual tilt ... the list gos on and on ? what is it about the fourtraks just love it ... keep up the good work fantastic what you are doing
Wow you are certainly doing a very professional job, that Fourtrak will without doubt be one of the best in the UK by the time you have finished doing you magic. Very impressive, great content, keep it up.
Thanks very much!
Top fabrication work Johnny blown away with the attention to detail. Great work
Cheers Carl! I’m going to strive to keep this level of finish up throughout the whole project!
Smashing it Johnny! Can’t wait for the next video, keep up the good content
Thanks, I’ll try to get the next one out a bit sooner!
Beautifully done, a real work of art.
Thank you! Check out my latest video...I finally have the body finished, mounted & painted!
@@JohnnyGetsCash I will, I'm still going through them from the start when I get a spare moment. If ever you want to have a holiday in Australia I'll supply the accommodation and all the coldies you can drink if you help me tidy up my supercharged Feroza (Sportrak) 😄👍
@@tim0e a supercharged sportrak ?! That’s amazing!
@@JohnnyGetsCash Yeah, went a bit silly with that one, custom forged rods, MLS head gasket, Nissan Pulsar turbo pistons, Autronic ECU, 2" lift with Bilstein HD sport shocks, HD torsion bars, Brembo brake components, 31" MTZs on imported American Racing alloys, list goes on. It's been the ultimate off road vehicle, in the 6 years I've had it it's been off the road more than it's been on the road 😂 (snapped crankshaft, massive blow by from bad tune etc).
I also had one with a 1JZ turbo swap from a Toyota Soarer but that was a death trap so ended up parting it out. It was fun while I lasted but.
@@tim0e have you Instagram or anything? I’ve got to see this creation!
Amazing job as ever. I can't believe you fixed those drum back plates. Looking for more!
Thanks very much! Yeh I just couldn’t find replacement parts so fabrication was the only option!
Amazing work, my Hilux needs this big time but unfortunately I don’t have the skills or pockets. Well done, great channel 👍
Thanks for watching, Lee. I am all too familiar with the Hilux situation myself! Best of luck with it!
Hey Johnny I'm doing a full restoration too I've the chassis full sand blasted and painted doing all the bushes now. The next part is the most expensive the respray. Your very talented love the videos
Thanks very much, I’m glad you’re enjoying the series so far! Great to hear that you’re doing a resto too, these things are definitely growing in popularity and people are starting to appreciate properly restored examples! Best of luck with it 👍
Man, that little foldable workbench had seen this and that😁👍👍 respect for the projects/videos! flipping cars isnot my cup of tea, but in the flavour you served I really enjoyed those as well!
Thanks for watching!
Absolutely brilliant work there. You certainly have been busy. After I rebuilt mine I coated the full underside with Lanoguard. Superb product and certainly preserves all your hard work. Really love the channel and looking forward to your next instalment 👍👍
Thanks Jamie, I’ll have a look at Lanoguard when I’ve finished restoring the body / before it goes back into the chassis. Cheers for the tip!
Thanks, I'm enjoying following your build.
Cheers Andrew, I appreciate the support!
Sweet Jesus, that was a satisfying watch. Excellent work.
Cheers Russ, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, loved the brake disc back plate fabrication. Keep up the good work!
Thanks very much!
Awesome job Johnny! Looking forward to the next video mate!
Cheers Ken, I’ll try to get the next one out a bit quicker!
Fair play that is spectacular work and it's fair to say that it is better than factory like you said you wanted it to be in episode 1 :)
Thanks Tony! Still lots to do but it should start taking shape soon!
A massive job. Well done!
Thanks! It’s certainly a great feeling knowing that the first phase of the project has been completed!
Amazing work Johnny, can’t wait for the next episode, woohooooo!!! 👌🏻🤩👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks mate! Next one hopefully won’t take quite so long to release!
Loving these videos mate, getting me all pumped up to start mine
Quick question when you sandblasted the chassis. What was that primer paint in the tin that you used before painting it black.
Keep up the good work
Cheers Lee! The primer I used was Rustins anti corrosion metal primer. Really good stuff in my experience 👍
Wow, what an episode Johnny. You really give me the cofidence to keep perservering with my two projects, a 1992 Toyota Soarer V8 ans 1995 Hilux Surf. The Soarer is pretty clean rust wise for a 30 year old car. But the Surf was so rusty undernaeath it looked like it was at the bottom of the sea for years. Can't believe your ball joints were removed so easliy with a few hammer taps. Mine needed drilling out. But what is your secret for not snapping bolts, WD40, heat, prayer ;-) I'm constantely snapping off smaller 10mm headed bolts, always in the most awkward to drill out spots. Lots of blood, sweat, beer and sometimes tears, shed trying to repair rust, replace or refurb worn parts. But you make it look easy, but also seem to be able to work at such a high quality level without the need for all the fancy and super expensive tools. Keep up the good work my man. You're an inspiration to many :-)
Thanks Darren! Your projects sound really interesting. I’ve always had a bit of a hankering for a V8 Soarer!
I do snap off the occasional bolt here and there, and, as you say - always in awkward positions!!
Generally I clean up and pre-soak with penetrating fluid where possible, but sometimes it’s just out of your control and you just know you’ll be drilling and re-tapping before the end of the day 😂
Thanks very much for your kind words - I really appreciate the support!
@@JohnnyGetsCash Thanks for the reply. I remember reading in one of your newer posts you said you were dropping the music in the time lapse pieces. What would be really cool is for you to add in some more running commentary. I'd be interested in knowing what fluid you used to clean the CV joint grease out with, the process involved in straightening the bash plates, why an angle grinder sometimes, then you switch to a flap wheel when cleabing rust etc. I know it may seem obvious to you as to why you do things a certain way, but you have years of knowledge in this type of work and any little tips or tricks would be grratly recieved by us amatures. And you don't need to give away all your secrets.
@@darrenliggett7222 thanks Darren. The music is a bit of a contentious issue. Perhaps I should drop it apart from in the silent Timelapse segments? I could definitely add in more commentary/ info but I worry my constant droning would become annoying to you guys!
Nice work man!
Thank you!
Wish you lived in NZ so I could pay you to restore my 80 series. Top work
I’d love to get my hands on an 80 series! The only problem would be that I wouldn’t want to give it back!
Quality. Simple as.
Молодец! Руки растут из правильного места . Привет из России.
I recently restored my 2001 Dihatsu Rocky with my father. Which includes removing rust from the entire vehicle, panel beating a few bumps from the previous owner, repainting, redoing the interior completely and maintaining her organs. Car is looking mint now, just like how it looked on the first purchase.
Cracking work Johnny, when you refitted the lower wishbones, and torsion bars is there a correct way of doing it? As In fitting the knuckle and top wishbone as you did. I tried to tighten the arm down and then set the torsion height to what it was when I removed them. Cheers
Hi Johnny I had terrible trouble with the polly bushes at the back they won't fit on the strut bar and the two smaller struts at the back axel I ended up buying genuine ones in the end
They are an absolute nightmare, I think everyone who’s ever fitted them has struggled!
@@JohnnyGetsCash how did u get the pan rod ones to fit
Brilliant 👏 👏
Thanks Ben
Muito bom companheiro... tenho um Daihatsu Feroza (Daihatsu F300) no qual estou fazendo o mesmo tipo de serviço... Parabéns.
Well that explains why i cant get any parts for mine... You bought up the last of the old stock from Milner 😅
Well least i got the last Radiator before you or i'd be jiggered 😜 Good luck for a fuel tank if yours is shot, been looking for months now! Think i'll have to bite the bullet and either fab one or get a marine Poly tank. Already measured up and a 70L 'off the shelf' will fit and would only need hangers fabricated also under 200 notes inc a universal fuel sender. 👍
Ha, yeh sorry if I’ve added to the scarcity of parts during the course of this project! Tbf I’ve had difficulty finding a lot of parts and have had to shop around, even sourcing some parts from Daihatsu in Japan!
I got very lucky with my fuel tank - although a bit crusty looking, it was totally solid and leak free, so as you’ll see in ep5, I got away with de-scaling, rust converter and a healthy coat of Gravitex!
Thanks for watching!
@@JohnnyGetsCash yea, my bad... Now I'm up to date with the restoration! Yea see what you mean, the undersude of mine looks like top of yours.
How the previous owner got it through MOT with a leaking tank is beyond me!
Make sure to dish out lots of tips on welding bodywork patches please... I'm gonna need to address that myself soon and I'm a body repair virgin! 🤣
Hi Johnny, fantastic vid! where did you get your rear coil springs from? what model are they?
Hi Jeff, thanks very much! The rear springs came from KS-international. They are the 20% stronger upgrade version and they cost around £56 for the pair. Hope that helps!
Amazing work mate what was you putting in the spring with the drill, what bike have you got in the background
Cheers! I was using spring compressors so was compressing / in impressing with the impact driver! My bike is a Harley 👍 thanks for watching!
Big step completed. Btw r those polyurethane cv shaft boots vehicle specific or universal fit? Where'd you get them?
These are sold by Milners specifically for the Fourtrak, but it may be worth checking with them directly to ask if they’ll fit other vehicles 👍
Strange Question. Feel free to DM me but I’ve just done this exact resto to my 4x4, any idea how much it would normally cost to get the chassis, suspension & brakes in this condition if you were doing it for a customer? It would just help me have a comparable idea of cost… Many Thx
P.s. amazing work! Love the channel.
Thank you! Unfortunately i wouldn't know how to price this stage as an external job, but i would estimate it to be £2k - £3k all in for the parts / labour etc (that is just a very rough estimate though so please don't take it as gospel)
How's this project progressing? I'd love to see the next episode
Hey Jack, I’m literally in the workshop working on the next phase right now! Hoping to have it all filmed and edited ready for release in the next couple of weeks 👍
Hi Jack, just letting you know that pt5 of the Fourtrak restoration will be going live at 13:00 GMT today - Enjoy! 👍
@@JohnnyGetsCash Awesome mate! That's about midnight here on the Gold Coast. I'll grab a coldie after work Tuesday and tune in.
28:45 Me when watching this video series
Would you tidy mine up? Weld sills clean underneath an wax oil etc?
As much as I’d love to help keep another one on the road, I don’t think I’d be able to fit it in with everything else going on!
@@JohnnyGetsCash that’s fair enough mate ! I have a sportrak and fourtrak both need similar treatment if you ever change your mind! Your doing a wicked job 👍
did you sell side mirror for rugger?
No I haven’t sold any parts as they will all be going back on!
Have you got a link for the new front wishbones that you got from daihatsu I've been looking for a set many thanks
Hi Oliver, I don’t have a link as I sourced these top links through my nearest daihatsu dealer. If you go on the daihatsu website and find your nearest dealer, give them a call and they will be able to source parts from daihatsu Japan to suit 👍
To be honest mate I didn't realise there was any dealers left in the UK
@@oliverelliott4453 Yeh I don’t think there are any standalone Daihatsu dealers left but there are certainly garages who are agents for them. If you go to daihatsu.co.uk you’ll see a map with all of the affiliated dealers marked on it. Your nearest may not be just around the corner but hopefully it’ll be of some help! If not, I can give you the details of the garage / guy i used as he’s really helpful 👍
What polibush brand is that?
They haven’t all come from the same supplier, but by and large they are from Milners 👍
@@JohnnyGetsCash thanks mate, are they any good from your experience?
@@AlexGnok in my experience they’re perfect, I’ve fitted their stuff to many different trucks over the years and never experienced any issues 👍
sometimes you need to avoid burning rubbers. it is very pollutant.
Hello would you come over and do mine in IR ta 👍
I’m not sure I’ll ever do another fourtrak to this level of finish again…I’ve let me over-the-top attention to detail run wild here!
kicked it in to touch , as i found all the rock music was driving me mad , if i wanted to listen to that crap i would fine a music channel , i thought ithis was a car channel but was wrong .
