      @wagh , what I'm doing wrong?? I run them about 60-70hrs a week for real work, not a rv or powering a TV but to run full mobile medical repair truck, been doing this 15 years they simply won't hold up to real commercial use, the air cooled models only have a life of 5000hrs and at almost 300hrs of run time a month they require a ton of maintenance due to parts failing

    A company I worked for, had an Onan diesel generator in one of their vehicles. It had a random stall issue. I took it to an RV repair shop that was Onan certified. They replaced the circuit board and it died again on a job. Took it back and they replaced the crank sensor. Died again on a job. This time I did my own troubleshooting and found it didn't have fuel pressure. I replaced the fuel pump and it didn't stall after that.

      @wagh mine is only 18 months old, stalls out 3 to 5 times before it eventually stays running, and at around 40 hours developed a fuel line leak which sprayed diesel everywhere and took 10 days to repair under warranty. They never figured out the hard start/stalling issue. What maintenance am I overlooking here? It’s already had 2 oil changes. Is there some voodoo ritual or human sacrifice I should perform, to make this POS run right?

    OBD-I style diagnostics for generators. I like it

  • @beeyesincalifornia1727
    @beeyesincalifornia1727 Год назад +2

    Actually, there is a scan tool for the Onan generators. It's pc based to be used on laptops and called Onan InPower Lite. It's generally a dealers tool and requires a number of adapters for the various models of gas, propane, diesel, hybrid, and inverter power systems they offer. This is usable on all units that have the A1 control system. Through the software it will tell you the conditions of the code along with any other codes that have been registered in the A1 controller. On some models you can monitor parameters for diagnostic purposes, adjust from American to European power specification standards and log data for diagnostic collaboration with the top techs at Cummins Onan for warranty repairs beyond the basic and simple. The run indicator light will give you the last logged code three times in a row. Then if there is another code it will run that code for three cycles and so on for three minutes. If there are no other active codes it will repeat the initial code that was given. The most common issues that I've came across running repair for rental fleets and over the phone technical assistance for 20 years was the batteries being low from a night of dry camping and a low fuel level from getting below the RV manufacturers anti-strand generator pickup that can be in the 3/8 to 1/4 tank level. When manufacturers put in the generator pickup tube it's not an exact placement. Beyond that the diesel generators have an ambient air temperature sensor that will activate a dwell timer setting in the A1 controller for colder temperature starting parameters but there are a lot of things going on when you hit that start switch. Also if you have the code stop and you want to restart the code flashing there's a simple process to that too. First, hold the start/stop switch in the Stop/Prime position until the light comes on to wake up the A1 Controller and release the switch once the light comes on. Next, press and release the Start/Stop switch stop position three times. At this point the light will begin flashing again allowing you to retrieve the code(s) for lookup. For the most part the most common code that you will ever see is the code 36 which is basically the A1 Controller saying the generator is stopped without being told to stop. This is the code that all Onan generators rest on when there are no issues triggered by a failed parameter and also when you run out of fuel. I'd elaborate from there but that would take all of the fun out of the RV experience for everyone. Happy camping from a 20 year Onan Level 3 Gas/Diesel/Hybrid/Inverter Tech.

    The Onan generator flash code 32 typically indicates an issue with the low coolant level or a faulty coolant temperature sensor. It suggests that there might be insufficient coolant in the system or a malfunctioning sensor that is not accurately detecting the coolant temperature. It is important to address this issue promptly to prevent potential damage to the generator and ensure proper functioning. Consulting the generator's manual or contacting an authorized service technician would be advisable to diagnose and resolve the problem correctly.

Seems simple but when i was a tech for Onan it was 1 in 3 service calls that it was one of those 2 simply over looked, usually the "less than 1/4 tank" being the most common.

    We’ve had some problems with our onan. It will die if we use the microwave. Didn’t do that when it was new. Just installed a smaller wattage microwave, it seems to be doing alright now. If we have things like the tv on, along with air conditioning it will sometimes die randomly.

    • @Andomosity
      @Andomosity Год назад +3

      Sounds like it's dying when you apply a load to it, so this usually means that the engine is not making enough power to keep itself from stalling under load. It could be the air filter, a worn out engine, maybe a faulty aneroid valve, fuel filter, worn out fuel pump, etc.

    code 32 is leading to few things
    1st bad battery check voltage meter if above 12v or 13v good under 11v or 10v bad battery or need charge up check date of battery if older than 4 years need be replaced
    2nd bad battery cable connection clean connection make sure no green stuff (it eat away connection which rotten away)
    3rd starter is worn out not able turn fast enough before you replaced starter besure check make sure nothing is dragging on it by turning crankshaft with hand if turn fine then bad starter if no or hard turn them there generator bearing is shot (worn out or frozed up)
    4th if all this is replaced still not turning fast enough tham replaced both cable from generator to battery (because some of copper inside of rubber cover can broken unseen)
    5th still same thing take air filter off and shoot some starting fluids in it see if start if it does them likely bad crankshaft sensors and not getting any fluid into carburetors to start engine
    im engineers i normally do ton of work on anything just save yourself a headache for tips try before take it to shop if you have zero skills them shop is only choice

    He's laughing because there's a page of steps. This is why I love when customers have scanners and check their engine codes then tell me they need a specific part replaced. I usually advise them to just pay the diagnosis fee and let me find the actual fault. Some say no and I replace the part then it doesn't fix their problem so they get mad and I tell them, you own a scan tool but you don't know how to diagnose.... Now that we got that out of the way, I'll diagnose and find the fault and fix it so you can be on your way
