Water is a compound, because it is made up of Oxygen and Hydrogen atoms which are chemically combined in a fixed proportion (1 Oxygen to 2 hydrogen atoms). Mixtures can be separated using physical means (eg a salt solution can be separated into salt and water using distillation), but compounds can only be separated using chemical methods. In this experiment, an electric current is used to separate water into its component elements :)
