@@Boogard Gameplan is what makes a character hard imo. Sure execution is a big factor but with enough experience the execution becomes muscle memory. As much as I don't personally care for hwo, he is a great example. He has a hard gameplan along with some execution, he might be a scrub killer but in high level it's hard for him, he relies on mind games and since we only get ft3 now the hwo player don't have the time to condition as much. DVJ is very hard in 8 he is my third main (lol I dont have pockets but 5 mains) his gameplan is brutal with his lackluster pokes he relies on spacing and whiff punishing. Hei has always been my main main and used to be imo the hardest mishima but DVJ takes that role in 8. Bryan used to have a hard gameplan but now since everyone mashes nonstop, even at god ranks and higher, his ch game has simplified his plan. So ya imo gameplan 100%

I main Kazuya not because he's hard, but because he's cool and fun. That's something I want to stress; people really shouldn't worry about whether their character is more difficult than another because at the end of the day were all just trying to have a good time. Whether Kazuya is hard or not, wavedashing is my favorite thing ever, and that's what matters :)

I'm new to tekken and picked up tekken 8 about 3 months ago now. As a kaz/hei main, this video really resonates with me, and I really appreciate you explaining other characters' gameplans and how they specialize in certain categories. It allows me to appreciate those who play them, and helps in implementing counterplay. The hardest thing about Tekken will always be the variety of moves each character has. I find myself always wondering what my opponent is going to do next and it gets worse with the number of moves I know a character has. Since I started with Jin in February, I've picked up Paul, Shaheen, Lee, Lidia, and Heihachi. Even though I'm much more familiar with punishing unsafe moves, I find myself overthinking about my opponent's options a lot more.

    • @yeeticusxl3318
      @yeeticusxl3318 2 месяца назад +1

That's your first issue: you're overthinking. The average number of moves a player realistically uses on any given character is around 15(the exceptions being unorthodox, heavy stance characters like Yoshi, Xiaoyu, Hwoarang, or grapplers like King). And the moves people use the most are their i10--i15 moves, as well as WR and WS moves. You're honestly lucky characters like Lei Wulong, Lucky Chloe and Ganryu aren't in the game because you'd have a harder time keeping up with how many moves they have.

I eventually managed to get him to Red ranks which I know isnt that good but for me who only now played tekken in a serious way, I would say that was a good rank to even get. kaz main here, it's true that he is difficult especially if you're trying to implement defense into his playstyle because he don't have easy button below i15, but kaz imo has a 2 playstyle, defensive and offensive, keisuke define this offensive playstyle really well and I also play kazuya offensively (believe it or not I will try to electric jin if he does f4 zen or if I find some gap in strings in any character) both playstyle is so difficult because with defensive you have to be able to electric because you dont have any other punish below 15f, while offensive kazuya you have to constantly take risk getting side stepped or your hellsweep getting blocked, kaz is the definition of a good character locked behind execution and mind games, thank you for making this video gang :)

Yeah, as a mishima main, I picked up yoshi just because, and learning him was a blast. The one thing I will say though, his fundamentals are very strong, and you don't even need most of his stances and moves to do well with him. You can legit just use df2, ws2, 1,1, 3,1, b2,2, hopkick, lows, unblockable low, f1+2 oki, and you will do fine with him with a gameplan that's as simple as kazuyas.
You don't need to play him in a specialist way anymore, like in previous tekken games. All that learning of gimmicks only give you a better mental stack.

I feel like Xiaoyu and Yoshi are particularly interesting examples of characters when it comes to difficulty. Their execution is somewhat easy, I'm thinking maybe iws2 looping on xiaoyu is a bit difficult but really nothing too complicated. In the other 2 aspects though, they are super complex and their gameplan is super odd compared to the rest of the tekken cast. They rely almost solely on 2 things: Finding gaps in your knowledge about them, or goading you into making a mistake. If you encounter them at a somewhat decent level, sometimes it feels like they're just chaotically jumping across the screen without any rhyme or reason.. but recently playing a lot of TK, GoD lings and yoshis they are super acutely aware of what they are doing and why - which I find super impressive.
Don't get me wrong heavy execution is a marvel to behold, but I also love looking at people that have to get super creative in the way they move and attack to either get in a position where they get to test you or flat out seduce you into thinking that this is the moment to press.
Most of the tekken casts gets there with strong moves that get you into plus, or simple sidesteps, but characters like ling, yoshi and lei have to find a corner to squeeze in based on what you do and just hope for the best that you don't know how to fight against that specific corner of moves.
If you've ever played as, or against someone that knows these characters incredibly well, they have to have SO MANY moves on their mind to still trick you it's completely crazy.
Sure, at lower ranks this feels just like ungabunga because you get snake-edged, cali-rolled, or flashed, but at higher ranks there is so much nuance

I think what truly makes a character difficult is the button input to on-screen output ratio.
Characters who any beginner can pick up and master over a few weeks like Tekken 8 Dragunov or launch Tekken 7 Leroy which made the average players compete with pros are the best example of objectively easy. Characters who are not in this category aka Steve Devil Jin Kazuya Asuka Zafina Raven who even pro players struggle to win with are objectively hard.
P.s if they're intent and hell bent on keeping Steve and Devil Jin low tier then they should simplify the button input barrier to these characters. That level of just frame stance transitions combo into heat mechics only to get 80 Dmg max while average Lilly Yoshi Shaheen Dragunov get 80% is pretty bad balancing

I generally prefer to play easier characters in Tekken, not because I'm not interested in growing as a player, but because I would rather focus on the aspects of the game that aren't character-centric like movement, reads, and picking up on/punishing habits my opponent is displaying. Having to think about all of that AND the correct execution for my character is not why I'm here haha. I just want to get my basic gameplan and some simple combos down and then focus on the micro-interactions from there, which is way more fun for me. My dopamine rush from fighters doesn't come from landing specific combos (which is awesome if you are into that), it comes from that moment of "I FUCKING KNEW YOU WERE GOING LOW THERE, GET LAUNCHED." That moment of knowing that you were two steps ahead is like nothing else.

When I played Tekken for the first time I liked Kazuya because his hair reminded me of Vegeta. I also liked Paul because his hair reminded me of Guile. I always advise people to pick a main based off their looks first - you will learn soon enough if their toolkit is okay for you.

7:27 i feel like this only describes her in tournament play / tekken god ranks and above. which gives a false/incorrect image of the effort and complexity she actually takes online
the char online who has 100 cheesy flowcharts and ultra bs evasiveness is not this deep in tekken king and below.
    to beat xiayou you need:
    - you need to know your char´s xiayou match up well, some of her evasive stuff needs to be checked with super spesific quick mids or long range neutrals depending on which char you play, this adds an entire new layer of complexity fighting her, and its not just "shes -13 i can do my 13f punish" like 99% of the cast
    - need to understand what options she gets from the 3 stances, which are already like 15+ moves and their properties
-understand that the xiayou player can choose to go from x to y stance from certain strings, which if you dont and they catch you pressing or waiting, they might just cheese you if you dont recognize the visual ques on what strings theyre using and transitions, lili has this but to a way smaller extent, as her 2 stances are incredibly easy to recognize, not the case with xiayou and way harder to keep track of 15+ moves instead of the 5-6 lili gets.
-take constant 50/50´s which you just have to guess, ik most of the cast in this game gets trashed on and this might be a low hanging fruit, but xiayous heat smash and her 50/50´s over all are just on another level.
-be twice as patient, because this might be the best character in the game who punishes you for trying to PLAY the game. unlike bryan where its easy to recognize where he is trying to ch / launch you, xiayou might do 2 transitions instantly into a low evasive launcher or a mid heat engager, and you wont have any idea of whats going on until you lab her, and see she has 100 situations like that which youre never going to learn fully unless you dedicate yourself to this game at the fullest
this character isnt that deep sadly in most scenarios, in tournament play i 100% agree the guy playing her needs to be creative and use everything.. but 99% of the online just doesn't know the match up dude, turning xiayou mains into super easy to figure out flowcharters who crumble once they find a guy that actually understands the match up and their 20 move rotation

Your videos helped me understand some of the Tekken lingo and what frames are (still don't know what my safe moves are, I just do the "faster" ones on instinct). Bryan also lacks moves with enough plus frames to setup up traps for combo/CH. You’re still stuck using your plus frames reading your opponent and moving.

The more reactive you are forced to play a character in tekken 8 to get the most out of a character, the more difficult your character is.
I don't exactly mean "defensive". It's like how i think steve needs to actively enforce a poke heavy gameplan until he can capitalize on mistakes. Where Lee can do something similar with the addition of having a reliably safe method of throwing out hitboxes at a keepout range that can punish a wide variety of impatient players.
Both difficult characters with a defensive style, but one depends on reacting to the opponent's style of play and the other has more ways to punish an opponent with a lesser read on playstyle.

As a Steve and a Kazuya main from Tekken 7, one thing that I can tell is that how the game treats your character. How I say this is that when you play as your character, the game gives you options on what to do and how much will you get out of it, to me, Kazuya and Steve are characters that has a huge risk since Kazuya is so predictable to the point that all you need to do is side step to the left, this puts you at a greater risk since your attacks are easy to counter.
Steve, being the only boxer, is put at a major disadvantage since the only way to score points in boxing is by punching the face and the body. When you have your hands as the main tools of your kit, people will watch pay attention to your hands and they can just duck your attacks since they hit high or mid points of the opponent's body. You can step or punch the foot but it's not like you can kick as a boxer, in fact, when you play as Steve, you can only sway with your body when you press the kick buttons (3 and 4).
The reason why characters can be hard in the first place is because you need to play them in a different way to win, it's not like you need to worry about execution or the fact that you have an unique moveset when you play a character like Alisa or Jin. Steve and Kazuya are the testaments of this since you have to realize that spamming buttons as Kazuya won't work as if you're playing Eddy or Hwoarang in Tekken 3. And that's why these characters can be considered difficult.
