Wow, who knew there was so much to making a tree on canvas!? Great tips! I can see that I have a lot to learn. Thanks so much for the emphasis on making the shape interesting, adding sky, and simplifying the colors. Lots of terrific information.

Dear Phil, Thanks for showing me how to compose with trees. Very enlightening. I wish someone had taught me this when I was younger. It all makes so much sense!

Thanks for mentioning Carlson’s book, it’s beautifully written and already a source of inspiration even after the first few pages. Following your channel with great interest. Apart from your useful, well-conducted lessons I appreciate your use of references from other painters. Many great artists I didn’t know and am thankful to have discovered.

Thanks for the lesson! I find getting to a believable tree or mass of trees takes me quite a bit of time. I'll design on paper going forward before painting, which will make me add more thinking time to my process.

Thanks, Phil, for showing us lots of paintings of yours and the historic ones too, very nice! Yes, trees; where most of us fail, and some do catastrophically, if they use that fan brush of theirs, ala Bob Ross, LOL. My "trees", in Tucson are columnar as you recall, green giants with arms, LOL. And the wispy ones which can't be made wispy enough as in Mesquites and Palo Verdes. Miss the confers and aspens of my old plein air painting haunts in the Sierra Nevada though!! ;D

So true Ron, that’s the best thing about being here in Georgia lots of solid pine and leafy trees

@@philstarke.artist Yes, I remember that, and the red soil, from my short time at an Army training base near Augusta, back in 1967!! ;D
