- This is a Blacklight Photography Photoshoot Tutorial video. Tips and tricks on how to shoot with uv blacklight. Explanation of the aperture, shutterspeed and ISO on your camera for beginners included, and how working with different settings will affect the photo result. Working with uv body paint and uv make-up (fast make-up tutorial included), and blacklight lamps.
Ultraviolet photography maylook difficult, but once you learn how to do it, it's so much fun! I spend a lot of time on this blacklight tutorial video (which is also my first photography tutorial), and made it a wee bit longer than most of my videos because I really tried to answer most of the questions about blacklight photography people sent me, so I hope it's useful.
Stick with me until the end, before you send questions my way :).
Light I've used in this video:
uv lamp: Eurolite 400 watt Floodlight
uv lamp: Eurolite 400 watt gun
uv lamp: Omnilux 25 watt spotlight
Red led light
Red flower shaped lamps (to create bokeh)
Blacklight make-up:
Kryolan aquacolor uv day Glow
Kryolan aquacolor uv day Glow Cream
Other props:
uv blacklight paint
uv blacklight tulle
white showercap
I got my light equipment at www.glowspecialist.nl , who have sponsored one of my other blacklight photoshoot videos before :).

If you are going to talk to the camera, don't blur your face. Especially when you forget to blur your face for a clip.
Literally lol
Thank you
Why on earth blurr faces when you show them in next cut?
Im in photography school and have done two blacklight shoots with one only giving me any results that I was after. thank you for this awesome affordable alternitive to blacklight paint.
Thanks a lot, very helpful for my first shooting with black light
Hi! Of course, I use a Canon EOS 5D Mark ii to film (85mm 1.2 lens most of the time, sometimes a 50mm or 24/105mm), and film at 1920x1080 / 25FPS. Shutterspeed while filming blacklight is between 1/30 and 1/60 (depending on ISO/Aperture), ISO around 200/400, depending on the aperture; which is often between f2.0 and f3.5. Sometimes I go a bit higher, f4 or f5.6, then I use a slow shutterspeed and higher ISO. I often use automatic white balance, or a color temperature between 28000-50000K.
Thank you for your info. I will play around with it later when I get a chance next year!
Great video! Very helpful and thanks for including comparison settings side by side.
Thank you for the tutorial though. It's very thorough.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video :)!
That was a really good tutorial! A lot of really cool stuff in there. Informative and simple plus there were a lot of examples - Gold Star for you!
Michael Hartman GOD STARS FTW WOOT! Thanks ;D!
Great video tutorial! I was looking for inspiration for a still-photo shoot and learned a few things about live shoots
Truly amazing! Your tutorial is easy to follow and very informative. Thank you!
Thank you so much, this is a really cool concept.
This is a great introductory tutorial for photography in general. Getting your head around the balance between aperture, shutter speed and ISO the basis for understanding why your composition does or does not work.
Cheers! I'm working on some other videos as well about aperture, shutter speed and ISO that are a bit shorter so people who look for general tutorials about that will find it easier to follow :).
Hi Iddy :). You could use flash, but then the glow effect will fade. By using a higher ISO, you can avoid using flash, though the image quality will of course be a bit less than when you use flash (and you probably cannot use really high f numbers. I can't post links in my response to you, so I added two links at the bottom of the description of this video, so you can see the difference between flash and non flash black light photography.
this is the only video I found on RUclips to do with blacklight photography all the other are using ridiculous expensive uv flashes which I'd never be able to afford so it really stopped my inspiration :( but the lights your using are very affordable and I'm feeling a lot more confident as I have seen the results of them :D thank you so much for your great work and advice!!!! keep up the amazing work
michael jones where do you buy the UV lights?
thank you so much for this video. i really need it! thanks!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great tutorial !
I'm gonna try shoot video someway with this stuff :)
Any tips for video shooting ?
Aww thank you so much! I hope it was useful :)!
These are AMAZING pictures, yall are doing great.
Glad you enjoyed the video/my work! :)
Thanks lol! Well, the lighting can be seen at 03:12. I just put all the black lights diagonally in front of the models so the uv paint would be reflected well from both sides. When using the red led light, as seen in the vid, I put it behind a model. I used the same set up during most of the shots (maybe moved a light a few centimeters, but not much). I really didn't play around with the lighting much, because uv light doesn't give you much flexibility (effect will fade when not aimed directly).
It was really helpful!! :) :) great job
Thank you so much for such a swift response, I should have everything I need then! were the lights floor level or did you move them depending on the composition, I am looking to create more of a head shot rather than a full length. Thanks again for being so helpful :)
I have no idea how I got here, but this video is really relaxing for some reason, so I'll stay and watch it.
New business skill: making people zen.
+PhotoandGrime.com I'm so zen
So chill
You are speaking just fine. Thanks for the informative video.
Thanks :)!
Thanks! The secret to black light photography is to use a tripod, live view + zoom function to focus, and just have a lot of patience and don't give up :). Also, shooting with a higher ISO beats shooting with a lower ISO & then later adjust the darkness in photoshop. But it's all explained in the video, so if you have more specific questions, let me know :)!
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed the video! I love working with Kryolan uv day glow. The Softcream is my favorite, because it's much easier to apply and the glow effect is even better in some colours campared to their aquacolour paint. You should definitely give that product a try :)!
Hi Karl! The Eurolite 400W floodlight illuminates across a wider area, while the Eurolite 400W gun creates more of a light beam to illuminate a specific area.
For a sculpture (depending on the size though) the Eurolite 400W gun sounds like the better option, but if you want to use the light afterwards in a studio for stillife blacklight photography, or to illuminate your subject evenly, the floodlight sounds better. If you are shooting models though, I would recommend the gun again. :)
hey cool tutorial
Is there a big difference on the light between the Eurolite 400 W floodlight and the Eurolite 400 W watt gun? I'm definitely gonna buy one of them.
First I will use to as a part of a sculpture and afterwards as lightning in a photostudio - any recommendations?
Thanks, I'll check it out again
I loved this video and it really helped me out a lot, thank you! I need it for an upcoming art project that I'm doing, once its done I'd love to show you
JackScarecrow Glad you enjoyed it! You can send me an e-mail via my website once you've finished it, would love to see. Good luck! :).
JackScarecrow Post a link somewhere if you don't mind sharing it. I, and I'd imagine others, would like to see it
Hahaha THANKS! Glad you do :)!
Wow. Really loved the video and your work.
Such a great tutorial. I am photographing a 16th birthday party this weekend with a Canon 60D. Do you have any tips for me for this model of camera?
Anytime :)! The lights were moved around depending on the position; Most of the time I have one on floor level aimed upwards, and another one on a table. These blacklights (mine at least) are very heavy most of the time; so when taking portraits, I often have someone either holding the light, or have the model sit on the ground so we can just use a table to put the light on. It's always nice to have an assistant during these shoots :). Good luck, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
Doesn't surprise me, considering there are uv torches as well! A UV flash would be really useful for shooting outside on location. Thanks for the tip!
i will have party Black light next 2 weeks ,thx for your video now i can use high iso.
1 question , i can use flash for this kind of work?
sorry for my En and thanks for your reply
Great video!! I have been thinking of doing some blacklight photography. Just a quick question. Did you use a combo of constant light and strobe, and if so what was your light set up or whay would you recommend?
Urbanchic Photog Thank you, glad you enjoyed the blacklight video :). I only worked with blacklights, no other ambient lights/flashes. I recommend shooting with prime lenses for their great apertures (low f numbers) and average ISO's so you can use shutterspeeds around 1/100sec. My light set-up are 2x 400 watt blacklights most of the time (one floodlight and one gun).
Which settings did you use? And do you maybe have an example of the outcome? If your image is too over exposed btw, take the same settings + adjust them by using a faster shutterspeed (the faster the shutterspeed the less light will get through), or lower your ISO (a low ISO makes your image less sensitive to light), or use a larger F number (smaller diafragma; limits the amount of light that gets through, gives a greater depth of field though), or just do all the above and experiment :)!
hey there , what white ballance did u use ?
nice video very good
how do you set up the lights? can you make a tutorial with a diagram on how you position and set up each light? thank you!
Thanks for your kind comment! I'm glad you liked it & that it was informative, I tried my best to make it as easy to follow as possible. Glad I succeeded! :)
when u put the paintins on her body do u go outside so that they can get the sun ? or some other type of lighting do u use, how long in order the paintings on her body to be bright?>
Hi there,
looking to do a shoot this weekend could you advise me if you used a specialist camera or filter to achieve the effect??
Thanks,
Tom
@3:40 how did you create the shadow. This was a very helpful video.
Thanks Jamie! Is this party a black light party? In general people just like to have some good party pics that show they attended the party. So you often use a flash during it. When using flash, the glow effect of black light will fade unfortunately, so you might want to combine taking good 'party shots' with a flash on your camera, and some 'real experience' pics without flash that show how it actually looked; use a higher ISO and shutterspeed of about 1/100 or 1/125 and lower F number.
you just became my favorite photographer now :D
i want to try to experience this kind of project which i will soon
the only thing that i am worry about is buying the light or lamp for it to glow
i can't buy expensive products that most photographer have
i need to find something that i can avoid
i did a lot of research and which light would you prefer LED or fluorescent
i do not want but blacklight tube, because I'm concern other people safety
is there any advice that can give me
thank and by the way keep doing what you do with your amazing creativity
This is rlly amazing and informative but I tired it on glow sticks but it was to glowwy :P so if u may, can u tell me how to deal with the settings in tht problem and btw my camera is the Canon 60D :P I would be very thankful :D
how do you protect the models eyes? UV light can be for bad for them
Great stuff
+John Pocino Thanks!
Hi, I really appreciate your great response to my question. And yes, this is a 16th birthday party with about 100 people. The whole party will be in black lights with neon decorations and clothing. There will be a photobooth set up to capture pictures of the attendants.
Thanks :)
I will be using a 17-50mm 2.8 lens as well as a 50mm lens. This I hope will capture the desired photos:) Thank you again.
You could get a fluorescent tube with black light, but also a black light bulb (400 watt is recommended) :).
I used my main camera; a Canon EOS 5D mark ii, and only used my normal UV filter on my lens which is always on top of it. You just need a good uv black light to achieve this effect, and material or makeup that glows of course when the light is turned on :).
Great video, thanks!
Is the face blur (in some shots) only in place to provoke comments? ...Like mine 😉 Just curious.
no... It was because people were targeting me >.>
I have been shooting some black light and neon paint portraits. Currently I am using 240 watts of florescent bulbs and a little more lighting would be nice for a faster shutter speed. I am trying to compare and contrast between LED and halogen bulbs. I can get 400 watt halogens, but that should be producing the same light as 133 watts of florescent of it conversant the same as incandescent. Ideally if I could get about a 150 watt LED for under $200, it should produce about 400 florescent watts or about 1500 incandescent watts. I guess I have two questions, does the brightness of an incandescent equal the brightness of an halogen for the same wattage? Is there an LED available that may suit my needs?
Randy Bradley Unfortunately I have never used LED black light before or blacklight fluorescent tubes, so I can hardly give any advice on that. I only work with my 400 watt bulbs (in a floodlight and a gun armature). Have you tried working with prime lenses and high apertures so you can use a faster shutterspeed?
PhotoandGrime.com While doing more research, I have been lead to believe that the light frequency of a florescent bulb will show more vibrant colors. I have not tried a p rime lens, but think it is an excellent idea.
Which camera did you use ?
Turn the volume on!!! ;)
i'am interesting ur tutorial . i would like to make some of it too. can you teach me ? i would like to hear ur opinion. any secret or gear to make it best?
hey,
can you elaborate on the video shoot?
Camera, ISO, Picture Profile and the quality of the video
thanks
I want to get pictures done like this but no one around here will do it! What lighting will I need? A guy told me I need a florescent light with black lights.
Will a UV filter reduce the black light effect. Since black light is UV light?
Steven Ross Yes and no. A blacklight emits UV light (which is invisible). UV light activates fluorescence in objects that are UV reflective. Objects that are UV reflective absorb UV light and then start to emit their own visible light. So even though a UV filter will filter UV light, it will not reduce the emission of light of a UV reflective object. :)
Now I have to try to shoot in UV lights.
+Nikolaj Golovanov You should! Good luck :)!
Use LED BL's. cool to the touch......
any good tips or tutorials for using black lights with a light box, to photograph small objects?
Well, there are smaller blacklight lamps you can use, and point at your object from different angles. But why would you want to use a light box? Mainly for the background?
PhotoandGrime.com I'm photographing a bunch of small objects that are black light reflective. I want them to glow, but I don't want the surroundings to be completely dark.
Melissa0774 Ah right, I get it :). Well, in that case you could use 2 (or 3) small 25 watt blacklights so you can aim them at your object from different angles. Small 25 watt uv lights are much cheaper than the big 400 watt ones (And of less quality, but for small objects it will work fine). Blacklights like these: www.glowspecialist.nl/contents/media/l_schijnwerper_25-watt_uv_glowspecialist.jpg .
PhotoandGrime.com I ended up not using a light box, but I'm happy with the way my pictures turned out. Here's a link to them. imgur.com/gallery/qiBwk
Great job! Those cubes look awesome :)!
Leuke en leerzame video. ;)
Dankjewel :)!
Camera wise, there aren't much tips I can give you, because most EOS Canon cameras just work alike :). It's mainly the lenses you can change to achieve different kind of photos. To capture a lot of a room, use a wide angle lens between 15-40 mm. A wide angle lens causes perspective distortion though, so people in the corner of the image f.e look a bit odd. A 50mm lens sometimes works better, this is a lens that 'sees the subject like the human eye does', so there's no distortion. Good luck :)!
after seeing this video I will really like to make black light photography one of my specialties... Can you help me as a young upcoming photographer from Ghana, West Africa?
Will it work for halloween when it's really dark
If you use UV make-up, and there are UV blacklights around, the make-up will glow. If there are no blacklights around, the make-up won't glow (in that case you can maybe try glow in the dark make-up).
great video, I'd like to mention that you can make a UV Flash from a regular flash - google it..
LIKE :-) I LIKE THIS LOADS
While the images are very interesting, I want to caution everyone that UV light is very hard on your eyes. Excessive exposure will, not might, lead to cataracts. Something I will have to deal with after a lifetime of working outdoors.
K G where do you get UV lights for photography?
I prefer to have the models eyes closed for this exact reason. UV light can damage the eyes quickly.
I didn't see any info on your lighting set up, basic camera setting can be found anywhere.PS Great hair
Hi Danyelle! Glad the video helped out. According to someone in the comments you can, I've never used a black light flash/strobe though, so I can't give any tips really. Best thing you can do I think is search for 'uv strobe' or 'uv flash' online :).
I used automatic mode. I work in RAW, not JPEG- you don't have to pick the whitebalance beforehand really when you shoot in RAW, because you can pick your 'final' white balance in the image converter in Photoshop. Besides that, automatic mode looked instantly fine while shooting. Eventually, I often process most pictures in the temperature range of 28000-50000K. It depends on the picture, since I love to mess around with the colours a bit as well when it comes to artistic photography!
No sound!!!
1:35 see the face of the beautiful woman!
Why do you have your face censored? You didn't do it on every scene btw, so you did reveal your face. It's strange.
A bit long winded. That music in the background was super annoying. I would've liked to have seen how it was shot using the lights. Not all the chatter. A for effort.
stop putting all that emphasis on your "S", it's really irritating when girls do that
Just girls?
Sshh.
there's another kind of people who do the same, but you already know it
Zambe80 .. What?
Than plug your fucking ears - j/k
