I'm from a family of several teachers, and teach kids age 5-12, and wanted to leave some feedback about the Guava Juice show from an educator's POV! The content overall isn't educational, but based on humor style, I doubt this was a show intended for an early childhood demographic, which tend to be the more educational shows - I don't have a good reference for shows outside of the US, because the only early education content I watched when young was PBS, but this would be shows like Sesame Street, Zaboomafoo/Wild Kratts, Berenstein Bears, or Octonauts. These kind of shows are generally aimed towards children under 6-7, and while I'm sure Roi does have viewership in that ages, his content in generall skews more towards late elementary to early middle school - the focus on gross-out humor is a huge hit for a lot of kids that age(stuff like the pee - it would just be potty humor to them). The Dora skit in particular is a good example of this - it is a rebellious feeling way for kids to make fun of younger kids shows as they grow older and get embarassed by what they used to like. You can see a similar phenomenon in kid's changing songs from kids shows, like if you've ever heard kids change the Barney 'I Love you, You Love Me' song to include hatred instead and killing Barney. It's pretty common at that age, especially with a lot of young boys! Another good sign of the age demographic here is the language used - villains make threats to the child characters, and words like 'butt' and 'fart' are used, whereas a younger show would be likely to substitute 'bum/bottom' and 'toot' or exclude the language entirely. For the older demographic this humor skews to, I honestly think it ends up doing pretty well from what you've shown. The pepper stuff might seem like an allusion to drugs, but to be honest, that kind of humor is pretty common for kids shows, because kids replicate adult behaviors - children will pretend to be inebriated off of mundane substances like milk. It's just a play-pretend thing for them! I think this show is helped a lot by it's additional writing staff - Roi himself is actually only credited as a writer on 4 episodes, including the pilot you watched, and I'm going to guess that his involvement is what gave the show the 'lol random XD' element in that episode. There's a pretty fine line between 2010s random humor and the actual humor kids enjoy, which is silliness - and the primary factor for what kids find silly is expectation subversion! I think that Roi might just not be able to easily discern the difference, because he doesn't work directly with kids, while the team behind the show is all decently experienced in kids animation. They've got a LOT more experience! The creators of the show actually previously worked on a Canadian animated show called Wishfart, which has a pretty similar set-up. It has a similar silly hijinks energy, and also stars a male protagonist, with a male nonhuman and female human slightly-lesser protagonists beside him as the other co-stars. The director also has a extensive credit list, including some pretty big names like Slugterra, Stormhawks, and the TV tie-in show for Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (also all aimed towards older kids). I will say that something to note about kids content is how easily children can replicate the onscreen behaviors. It's standard broadcasting practice for children's networks not to include any dangerous behavior that children can easily replicate - so shooting yourself from a cannon or using a laser gun would be okay, but stuff like not wearing a bike helmet or not wearing a seatbelt is a hard no-go. Eating ghost peppers is an example of something that I /could/ see on a syndicated show, but it also feels a little bit dangerous, as most children could actually be injured if they tried that, and it is possible for them to do, especially being presented as a fun adventure. I might be being oversensitive on this, though - I do work with 5-6 year olds as well, so I might be biased on the safety thing! Overall, this actually seems like a pretty good kids show! The content is innoffensive, and from what I've seen on parent review sites, it generally stays very appropriate, with specific episodes including messages like people acting out because they're hurt, trying new things, and teamwork to problem-solve instead of finding blame. These are great messages for older kids, and based on the style of storytelling, it seems to be done in a way that won't feel condescending to kids - if you make it too obvious, a lot of kids will feel like they're being treated as babies and not want to listen. Lack of fight scenes means parents don't have to worry about replicatable violence (and promotes talking problems out instead of fighting), and the main two characters are both POC, which many kids wouldn't be able to see elsewhere! I also think it's fantastic that the Jenny is shown as being as chaotic and fearless as Roi - I know a lot of parents who would be really happy that their kids, especially daughters, have a female peer role model in the show like that. I hope this is some helpful insight!
Just wanted to drop in and say that this was really interesting and insightful! Good to know that it isn't young kids that's consuming this content, but moreso the older children who would be into all this grossout humour. Not too different from my own young enjoyment of courage the cowardly dog!
I’m SHOCKED that the Guava Juice cartoon doesn’t look as fucking terrible as I expected it would. It kinda looks…pretty good?? (for a Gravity Falls ripoff)
I worked for a bit on the Guava juice show. Didn't even know what a Guava juice is until I saw this video. That show is meticulously made with its bible and the asset layout in its rigs and everything. Never would have thought it would be produced by some youtuber, not from Disney or Warner or anything else for that matter
i don’t know why but i love how your camera is always super offset and you’re sometimes just in the very bottom of the frame i can’t explain it i just think it’s great
The guava juice animation reminded me of an episode of teen titans go titled 'the spice game' where they eat a bunch of chillies and they become addicted to eating chillies.
Mark my words, Pinely will be a full-on video essayist and/or documentarian within a few years. (Not that it's a bad thing lol, inject that stuff into my veins)
definitely, but there is one thing he must do to fully mark his transition..........make a "capitalism bad" video than he will be a true video essayist.
Pinely sir. Dont feel bad about the vod channel. You gained a new avid watcher. Im tearing through your whole portfolio. You definitely gained alot even if that guy stole your video like that
it seems to me that the "liza on demand" show is just a bleak copy of "unbreakable kimmy schmidt". kimmy did a bunch of jobs for "taskrabbit" and that made for short gags while showing kimmy navigating a whole new world and driving the over hanging story forward. i have not watched liza's show, so my comparison may not be accurate, but every clip of the show that i have seen, both in this video and before, has just given me the feeling of "i've seen this before, and it was done better then", the show doesn't seem to bring anything new to the table and doesn't give me, someone from outside liza's regular audience, a reason to continue watching. now is it an unfair comparison putting a youtube premium series against a netflix series created by tina fey and robert carlock? sure. but the similarities shouldn't be overlooked just because they originated from different backgrounds. if someone has seen liza's show or know more about it, feel free to correct me. but this is my impression as someone who has seen one of the shows but not the other.
The writing and humour is definitely for kids but I actually love the Guava Juice cartoon art style!! There’s so many little fun things in the background like pictures on the wall and items on the shop shelves that only show up for a few seconds. So much effort has obviously been put into those small things which might not seem like a big deal but a lot of animation today tries to get away without doing it for monetary reasons (eg. The new Addams Family films) and end up just… looking boring. Even if you don’t find it funny, at least this carton looks great and actually fun! (I’m also surprisingly impressed by Roi’s voice acting 😁)
The song that played during Lilly Singh's Mask skit actually seem to amplify how much of a trainwreck the whole thing was. The cartoon aesthetic the skit was trying to replicate doesn't really work without the exagerrated cartoonish cgi the movie had. Even if the movie's cgi is quite old compared to today's standards, it was part of its charm.
I legitimately wasn't expecting to see something as visually pleasing and competent from anything covered in this video as that Guava Juice cartoon, especially from Guava himself. It's actually really nice to see!
40:40 “do we really need a documentary on David Dobrik’s life? …the guy who constantly documents his life?” Man that made me laugh out loud, These little observations are really excellent, such a small point but so funny and really gets to the heart of the issue
Man I'm so glad I stumbled onto.your existance right before you left the box. Honestly one of the funniest dudes on RUclips. And all the while supplying a consistantly insightful commentary.
For the record: Catman is in fact a DC character. He's a villain/anti-villain most recently associated with the Secret Six. He's also a Batman-associated character. That means that that joke is not even a joke. It's... nothing.
While I agree it would be great, wouldn't discovery just censor all of his humor? I just don't see discovery with a documentary with an uncensored Michael Reeves lol
@@ItsJustValHere You're right, I guess they don't have to worry about that with David since he has no sense of humor. smh. But, I would still love a doc show about Michael Reeves!
I honestly think Lily could've done something similar to that of Carol Burnett in terms of interacting with the audience. She seems like the type of person that'd be fun to interact with and it would give her show a much cozier feel.
I don't want to sound old but I miss the old days when RUclipsrs put more effort to their content and the content felt natural... Now it feels corporate.
@@missdiction4455 Maybe you’re too young? Back before YT was paying creators through a few years after people were creative and interesting in ways you see far less of now. @@sourgreendolly7685 people are creative, monitization is the best thing RUclips has ever done, it helps creators fund more vids and make them more unique and creative.
Are you kidding? The majority of youtubers in 2008 were using potato cameras balanced on a stack of books in their bedroom so they could make a 4 minute vlog about the sandwich they just got at subway. The effort was minimal. But that's what made it feel natural.
This reminds me of that Mitch Hedberg bit about comedians getting jobs in acting/screenwriting. It's like walking up to a chef and saying, "great food, can you farm?" Like, it's cool for youtubers to want to try other fields out, and some of them do great, but it IS kind of weird that we consider it a natural progression between very different skillsets.
I think it makes more sense than tiktokers becoming singers and actors though. They don't even seem too passionate about what they're doing, it just seems like "well, I want to do something, so maybe I should sing??" But they can't really sing..
Your point at 19:18 totally applies to the writing on she-hulk, or heck, even the new saint's row game. It feels like modern writing really suffers from an inability to make salient societal critiques in a creative or subtle way. They just sorta.. blurt it out
So you're traveling around? It also seems like you've been sick so I hope you're feeling better! It's always fascinating to watch reviewers talk about all these creators I've never even heard of until people like you review them or they get into giant drama lol. Usually I have a good tolerence for gross out humor but those Guava Juice clips you played made me feel gross lol. Ironic that his cartoon series is the most tolerable and decent out of all the other RUclipsr shows, the animation seems to be above average quality and the art style is kinda cute, hopefully it improves over time.
Yay another video! Really loved the editing in this one. You are getting better and better! Hope you feel well after all those errrr adventures in India.
28:52 i must admit this joke actually got a laugh out of me. i was surprised to see this somewhat clever of a somewhat joke in this lazy childrens show.
I think with more time and funding Lilly’s late night show could have been way better than it was but the first season was a lot rougher than they had anticipated it being and that’s probably why they didn’t really give it the chance to grow into its own ya know?
Honestly, though. Forget David laughing about eating ice cream in front of fountains, I want to hear this whole story of Orr apparently getting every illness known to man while backpacking in India or something.
I never watched guavajuice didnt know they have an animated series but omg it looks quite good, it could be something from neo nickelodeon tbh, good for him thats great work! animation is hard
“David Dobrik surprises his friends with a trip” reminds me structurally “CapnDes takes his friends around his gross hometown and shows them all the places he peed on stuff”
Here’s the thing.. Catman exists. And he does kinda go around rescuing cats. So the premise of the joke is not only unfunny on its face, but it also isn’t a joke cuz like.. it’s an actual thing.
I feel like the most common thing that ruins jokes is just bad pacing. Like, the cat batman joke could've been funny, but the extra "catman" line just kills the pacing.
The pitch-shifted Seinfeld theme during Liza's segment kept serving as a painful reminder of what an actually good sitcom is lmfao Great video! I love these deep-dives into weird media nonsense haha
Honestly the only person I can think of who started on RUclips and went on to make a successful tv series is Quinta Brunson, but then again i wouldn't call her a youtuber.
If I was locked in a room without my phone or laptop, and I had to pick one of these four shows to watch to pass the time, I'd probably pick the Guava Juice cartoon. Maybe it's my bias for cartoons and animated media, but that was the only one that looked even remotely entertaining. It's colorful, the animation is pretty good, and the voice acting was solid. Again, I love cartoons and animated media because that's a part of my inner child that I refuse to let go, so maybe I'm slightly biased, but I honestly don't think I could watch any of the other ones for more than 10 minutes max.
Guava Juice was a part of Wassabi Productions. Their content was always immature, but that's why I loved it as a kid. But it's insane that Guava Juice hasn't really matured over the years and just creates weird kids content
it's funny that i used to see pinely's videos(when he used to animate and use the cartbord persona) and say "he seems so cocky and annoying, i don't get it" and right now i always wait for a new video since he started making more videos like this, shoeing himself and making some skits every now and then, i like the transition and it makes it more enjoyable :)

Um Dora is POC mate 😅 there’s been many cartoon POC characters now
But um the insight was helpful none the less🤷♀️
Can tell you’re from educators bc of how long that fucking comment was lmao
omg u opened memories for me of all those “bad word” jingles about barney we used to pass around
I’m SHOCKED that the Guava Juice cartoon doesn’t look as fucking terrible as I expected it would. It kinda looks…pretty good?? (for a Gravity Falls ripoff)
Very poetic to critique the cinematography of the episode while looking like you’re in a hostage ransom video. Tortured by inexistent jokes, rip Orr.
I worked for a bit on the Guava juice show. Didn't even know what a Guava juice is until I saw this video. That show is meticulously made with its bible and the asset layout in its rigs and everything. Never would have thought it would be produced by some youtuber, not from Disney or Warner or anything else for that matter
WELCOME BACK PINELY WE MISSED YOU ❤️
That jiggling jungle video made me feel things I never have wanted to feel, I can't describe it, either fear, disgust, terror, or all of the above
i don’t know why but i love how your camera is always super offset and you’re sometimes just in the very bottom of the frame i can’t explain it i just think it’s great
I used to find Liza's stuff really funny...I feel horrible that the old videos still almost got a chuckle out of me...
I watched it without laughing at all but with the memory of this shit breaking me in college smh
Honestly I thought the dollar store bit was pretty funny. Not like fall-out-my-chair laughing, but I certainly chuckled
the brain grows!!! have patience for yourself when you were but a sprout🌱
that's not a bad thing
…? Why? It’s not that big deal.
The guava juice animation reminded me of an episode of teen titans go titled 'the spice game' where they eat a bunch of chillies and they become addicted to eating chillies.
Your audio editing is insane, big fan of your music/sound usage. It works so well with your comedy
Mark my words, Pinely will be a full-on video essayist and/or documentarian within a few years. (Not that it's a bad thing lol, inject that stuff into my veins)
god i hope so.
love the pfp laird
I need this.
He’s unleashed his beauty and power on the world
definitely, but there is one thing he must do to fully mark his transition..........make a "capitalism bad" video than he will be a true video essayist.
Man even MY neck hurt watching you in the tub lol, we appreciate all the effort you put in your backgrounds!
Good to see you back. Hope your health concerns are being taken care of.
The "Onma island is buried a treasure chest" joke, with the proud follow up dance and makes me laugh out loud every time.
That Lilly Singh mask bit has caused permanent damage to me on an existential level.
The Animation In The Gauva Juice Show Is Like.. Way Too Good..
Do you mean way too good despite the weird plot or way too good in the artist secretly does r34 animations on newgrounds?
@@Jixsurez I Don't Know Anything The Animator Has Done Before Guava Juice, I Was Just Talking About How The Animation Seems Very Fluid
@@Jixsurez Wait an artist for the show has a NG?
@@MistaBrandoVA not that I know of, it was a hypothetical meme
Love to you Pinely, greetings from Kaliningrad, Russia, things haven't been pleasant since that harsh invasion to Ukraine
I kinda like the Cosmo and Wanda room vibes
Edit: the fact that catman, a character from fairy odd parents, was mentioned made me pretty happy
onma island is buried my heart ♥ Love you buddy always happy to see new content from you
40:40 “do we really need a documentary on David Dobrik’s life? …the guy who constantly documents his life?” Man that made me laugh out loud, These little observations are really excellent, such a small point but so funny and really gets to the heart of the issue
Man I'm so glad I stumbled onto.your existance right before you left the box. Honestly one of the funniest dudes on RUclips. And all the while supplying a consistantly insightful commentary.
For the record: Catman is in fact a DC character. He's a villain/anti-villain most recently associated with the Secret Six. He's also a Batman-associated character.
That means that that joke is not even a joke. It's... nothing.
those aren't the actual wall colors in the hostel that's just cosmo and wanda
The Guava Juice cartoon actually looks really cute, I'm pleasantly surprised
Legitimately laughed at the Onma joke, gdi
They definitely should have done a discovery channel with Michael Reeves. Not a controversial guy like David Dobrik
More effort? Like who? When? Am I just so old I’m losing memory?
@@missdiction4455 Maybe you’re too young? Back before YT was paying creators through a few years after people were creative and interesting in ways you see far less of now.
That said, I keep seeing this sentiment of wanting it back- hopefully that’s a sign that authentic creative videos will be popular again.
@@sourgreendolly7685 people are creative, monitization is the best thing RUclips has ever done, it helps creators fund more vids and make them more unique and creative.
@@missdiction4455 NigaHiga
Are you kidding? The majority of youtubers in 2008 were using potato cameras balanced on a stack of books in their bedroom so they could make a 4 minute vlog about the sandwich they just got at subway. The effort was minimal. But that's what made it feel natural.
the dangerdoom instrumental was a top tier addition
This reminds me of that Mitch Hedberg bit about comedians getting jobs in acting/screenwriting. It's like walking up to a chef and saying, "great food, can you farm?"
Like, it's cool for youtubers to want to try other fields out, and some of them do great, but it IS kind of weird that we consider it a natural progression between very different skillsets.
I think it makes more sense than tiktokers becoming singers and actors though. They don't even seem too passionate about what they're doing, it just seems like "well, I want to do something, so maybe I should sing??" But they can't really sing..
The Onma joke was such a god tier callback joke, genuinely caught me off guard
Ah yes, another amazing upload!
Hope you’re feeling better, and all is well
Your point at 19:18 totally applies to the writing on she-hulk, or heck, even the new saint's row game. It feels like modern writing really suffers from an inability to make salient societal critiques in a creative or subtle way. They just sorta.. blurt it out
it’s so ham-fisted it becomes condescending
thank god liza koshy didn't have access to my cat when she had cancer
ikr, that's not funny.......it's just sad.
I saw Trash in the Friends font and was about to pull up with some popcorn because thats a spicy take I wanna hear 👀👀👀
Yay another video! Really loved the editing in this one. You are getting better and better! Hope you feel well after all those errrr adventures in India.
28:52 i must admit this joke actually got a laugh out of me. i was surprised to see this somewhat clever of a somewhat joke in this lazy childrens show.
Pinely makes the most entertatiing video essays,
this vid took Pinely above and beyond being just a youtuber
Hey, love your videos, nice to see you have fine taste in content creators too!
@@iamjustkiwi Thanks! Yea Pinely's dope
The first comparison I thought of when I heard about Liza on Demand's plot was The Goodies, the 70s 'live-action-cartoon' Britcom
I think with more time and funding Lilly’s late night show could have been way better than it was but the first season was a lot rougher than they had anticipated it being and that’s probably why they didn’t really give it the chance to grow into its own ya know?
Next up: Discovery with Pinely? Your vacation sounds a million times more interesting than david dobrik's lol
Honestly, though. Forget David laughing about eating ice cream in front of fountains, I want to hear this whole story of Orr apparently getting every illness known to man while backpacking in India or something.
Your work and editing in this is unreal. Youre a god pinely
15:00 dude I'm loving that Tame Impala shirt! And the video as per usual ✌🏻😎🤭
Oh my god the segment of her doing The Mask made me cringe so hard I almost started crying.
The Mask is my favorite all time movie ever. - that Mask thing.. the costumes were great… that’s all I can say. She did well on the costume.
Jesus Pinely be careful, don't want my box boy to die out there
I never watched guavajuice didnt know they have an animated series but omg it looks quite good, it could be something from neo nickelodeon tbh, good for him thats great work! animation is hard
yummy
how am i even supposed to respond to this james
what is yummy
🍦
Rhett and Link's Buddy System is incredible
Lilly: "I'm bi, brown, and proud!"
Me: "I'm an Autistic albino. What's for lunch?"
Unrelated but the aesthetic and color palettes of Pinley’s setups are *_excellent_*
Pinley minutes later: sorry where I am’s ugly af
Blue and white with slivers of bright warm neons, and that but flipped
Fucking excellent my dude
“RUclips challenges are a fundamental part of human development and not remotely because they made me an absurd amount of money”
I miss Pinely. Don't get me wrong, Mr. RUclipsr makes good videos too but that cardboard box fella had a completely unique charm to him.
your videos are so addicting
The pitch-shifted Seinfeld theme during Liza's segment kept serving as a painful reminder of what an actually good sitcom is lmfao
Great video! I love these deep-dives into weird media nonsense haha
omg the kinda late show makes me want to rubber band from perfectly sensible to lizard people.
Honestly the only person I can think of who started on RUclips and went on to make a successful tv series is Quinta Brunson, but then again i wouldn't call her a youtuber.
Actually, I totally get why the guava juice show would involve a magic bathtub, he was like, the person making "Filling my bathtub with ____" videos.
"on my island is buried my treasure chest" got me
One of my favorite RUclipsrs honestly!
4:44 I mean wasn’t Liza part of that large contingent of Viners who moved to RUclips when the platform died?
She was
*gasp* Cuphead music, you spoil us😊 well I think some youtubers (or at least the ones I follow) have talent
Liza got her start on vine so it makes sense that her videos reflect that
If I was locked in a room without my phone or laptop, and I had to pick one of these four shows to watch to pass the time, I'd probably pick the Guava Juice cartoon.
I‘m a bit mad at you that you didn’t make the joke out to be HuMan but instead chose HumanMan.
the framing and editing in this video is so fucking funny i'm on board
The fact tha tthe posters behind you are two of my favorite movies from the last 20 years really explains why I agree with so much of what you say
it's funny that i used to see pinely's videos(when he used to animate and use the cartbord persona) and say "he seems so cocky and annoying, i don't get it" and right now i always wait for a new video since he started making more videos like this, shoeing himself and making some skits every now and then, i like the transition and it makes it more enjoyable :)
