Letterman was even more fun back then! Or maybe it's because of the great Joan Jett. I wonder about the look on that guy's face when he found out he missed that call!
Starting at 4:57 you can hear noises from either the band or backstage. At 5:08 Letterman pointed behind him and said there are some "backstage problems". Watching it again I guess her guitar player was shouting the answers to his questions maybe before Jett can? Letterman seemed bugged by it the rest of the interview. He ended the vid by saying maybe he can get his job in Indiana back but I guess that was about the failed phone call.

You may be right that it was her guitarist who was shouting something. But I don't have any inside info on this. I know that this was an odd show -- not much was going right all night, and the failed, time-killing phone call just added to it.
