      Our hawkers are pretty scared about being filmed due to fears that it may be sabotage by competitors or that you are working undercover for the AVA. :D Even I, as a local, was once stopped near an eatery while photographing the neighbourhood, and he asked me am I from the AVA! ;)

    • @seed2584
      @seed2584 7 лет назад +5

      That was not entirely the bus driver's fault. The guy was drunk and dropped his pants. The lady on board the bus that was monitoring the people entering asked him to leave. He then stumbled off the bus and fell and the rest is history. Both parties are to blame, if you think about it.

      @intrinsical 7 лет назад +29

      I live in that area (Yio Chu Kang/Jalan Kayu) and there are 4 famous prata restaurants here. Out of these 4, there's one that used to be the best (but is now the worst among the 4) and is famously proud of that fact. I have seen their employees scold customers so I imagine that's the one Mike went to. It's a good thing because these days, their prata is a small, ghee-soaked and pale version of the original.

    Peranakans (male: Baba, female: Nyonya) (土生华人) are the descendants of Chinese Fujian migrants in the Malaysian region who have mixed with the local Malay population. They identify as Chinese and still hold on strongly to their Chinese roots in terms of culture.
    They're not a special indigenous race that brought foods over. They're Chinese people that applied Chinese cooking techniques on local southeast Asian ingredients.
    Edit: In any case, Nasi Lemak is a food of native Malay ethnic origin. That's a further error there. The Peranakans may have their unique take on it (such as the Nasi Lemak was linked to Nyonya in this video), but its historical origins should lie with the Malay ethnicity.
    BTW, big fan. Keep these videos coming please. :)

      Carrot cake isn't radish that's been cooked till it's mushy and soft. It's basically shredded radish made into a steamed cake with added flour. The radish is just for flavour.

    • @FadzlinaMajid
      @FadzlinaMajid 7 лет назад +4

      I really respect the heritage Peranakans have in SEA, however nasi lemak was not invented by them. Sure, there are many dishes the Peranakans made popular throughout SEA, nasi lemak just isn't one of them. That's a dish born out of the Malays and SEA, whatever cultures that might be ✌🏼

    I never liked Lor Mee until I ate the one at Old Airport Road. Usual for me is $6 bowl with cut chilli but without vinegar. I can find a few Prata places where I wouldn't mind eating but none for Lor Mee. It's that good and unique.

      Mickel Tee ...their selling point is using real fresh fried fish chunks and the slurry gravy is nicely balanced with spices and soy sauce. I have been eating their Lor Mee since 25 years ago and $2 can get me a substantial bowl with plenty of fish meat. To think now you have to pay up to $6.

      Adeline Gan no argument there :) yes they increased over the years. 2 years ago a $5 bowl for breakfast could last me till dinner. Same portion increased $1 since then. The ladies - their memory power la. Take advance orders and never get them wrong 👍
