    Awesome Q&A, I still watched even though I have grown up in NZ lol. My Aunty lost her wallet the other week at the warehouse with $500 in it, it was returned to the front desk with all her money still in there. Love NZ and glad you're loving it here too :)

    Going through your vlogs at the moment and have to say these are the best I’ve seen on moving to New Zealand. It’s a big dream for me and my GF to move here. Doing research on the best places also. We are early 50s and late 40s and hoping that we aren’t too late in life to be able to do this. 🙏

    Wow, you have lived such an amazing adventure. It makes me a bit sad to think that my husband really wanted to move to New Zealand but I discouraged him because of our families here. But if only one person wants to make the move then that isn't a good enough 'why' as you say. You are so kind to take the time to make these videos to help others considering the move.

    Hi Jen. thank you so much for such a well done and informative Q&A vlog. it was extremely professional, well thought out and informative with so much heart. My wife and I appreciate you advice and need all the encouragement we can get, especially the verification of all the kiwis real life stories on how safe it is...truly motivational! I've been postponing replying to you email until I saw your vlog. With the major time difference to South Africa ill try to get on that as soon as I can. Till then Thank you for answering all my questions, you doing real informative great quality work.

    Really awesome Q&A! This video helped so so much. We live in South Africa and we just stared the process of immigrating to NZ. There just isnt a future for our kids here in South Africa and crime is getting out of control. We are homeschooling our kids but after watching your video im really happy to hear how good your schools are and would really consider put my kids in school.

    Hmm. I thought NZ was as hot as Australia in the summer. Actually kind of a bummer to hear it's not. But as a Minnesotan, I'm sure it'll still be plenty warm for me =P we may be moving there or London for my partner's thesis work. On another note, I had no idea home windows were barred in South Africa.

    You are awesome sauce! Thank you for making this! I have been having, for a lack of a better word, "impressions" about moving New Zealand, which is very odd considering it is so so far away and I know no one from there. I am absolutely terrified of not being able to find a job there, especially because cost of living is so high - I have no idea how I am going to afford it but I have faith that if it is right for me, everything will work out as it should. :) Again, thank you!

    A helpful video, that is honest and real about what you have found New Zealand to be like in your experience. Just as you have said, people are people and crime occurs unfortunately everywhere.
    New Zealand, from it's earliest foundations, has been a land peopled by migrants. The diversity found here in New Zealand's various communities, creates a rich, enjoyable tapestry. As the saying goes: A stranger is just a friend whom we have yet to meet.

    I'll never forget the first time I was in NZ witnessing a cop pulling someone over and then having the person get out off the car to have a chat on the side of the road. Coming from America that completely blew me away. I live in Australia now and even the Aussie cops aren't that laid back. Is that still the common practice or interaction in New Zealand?

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад

      I asked Grant and he said that it's not common practice, they will never ask the driver to get out of the car, but very often the driver will get out and approach the officer. But there isn't any serious risk.

      NSW cops are the belligerent present day incarnation of the corrupt rum corps of the first convict settlement. recently a dumb cop in Queenbeyan pulled his gun on a motorist who tried to avoid an RBT. I wrote to the commissioner and complained that they spent too much time watching American TV shows and getting themselves hyped up. The coronial inquest into the Lindt cafe has exposed what a collective of bumbling plods they are. They'll never live it down, I reckon

    Hey Jen,
    I heard from some people that in NZ you can't spend a day lying out in the garden on a nice sunny day, since you will be bitten by sandflies if you remain stationary. Is this true? It would be a pain to be in such a beautiful country but not to be able to fully enjoy it. Thanks!

    • @kimlee06
      @kimlee06 8 лет назад +1

    • @louloulouable
      @louloulouable 8 лет назад +1

      Not jen, but thought i would jump in. No, that's not true. There are some beaches that have terrible sandflies, so maybe if you lived right on the beach it would be possible, but i haven't heard of it. I live in Wellington and i have never seen a sandfly here ;)

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад

      It depends on where you are and also how much the sandflies love you. They seem to adore me lol - if I sit out in my own back yard I can get a bite or two and if there are any on the beach they will find me. It's not a big deal though. I use Off spray on my feet and legs when on the beach or bush and it does the trick, or if I'm at home and not on the sand then I have a mix of coconut oil and some essential oils (eucalyptus, citronella, lavender etc) that I rub onto my feet and legs and it keeps them away. It's definitely not something that stops me from enjoying the outdoor lifestyle or that is a big bother or worry! I just see it as another step like applying sunscreen which I have to do or I burn.

    • @matthewcheuk2265

    • @pipanigelongdingdong
      @pipanigelongdingdong 8 лет назад

      A thousand per month?! How can that be enough Haha. Also since nz has minimum wage of 15 dollars per hour I think any job can be easily above 2.5k per month?

    • @divyanshd5001
      @divyanshd5001 8 лет назад +1

      Teo HH but that's before the pervasive taxes. and you asked "frugal". I'm an international student and I spend a thousand to 1.5k every month. Basic with no "going out". no cinema. no eating outs and stuff

    • @divyanshd5001
      @divyanshd5001 8 лет назад +1

      1.5k to 2k can get you more than basic I.e. "comfortable".

    How about taxes? I plan on transferring large sums of money, how are the banking systems? Also I was told that it would cost several$NZ Million for proper housing, is that in the $5M to $10M NZ range?
    Thanks and good luck to you and Grant.

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад

      I've literally just this minute finished filming my Moving to NZ Q&A video so I'll add your questions to the next one, but to briefly answer you here, you'll have to look up the taxes info online as I don't have that information (sorry), and if you are wanting to buy property in Auckland you will likely need over NZ$600k, depending on which area you want to buy in and what size house, but you probably won't find much for less than that. But if you look elsewhere in the country the housing costs are lower; here in south Taranaki our 3 bedroom house on half an acre cost less than NZ$180k. Hope that helps!

    Very good videos , very helpful. Forgive me if you already answered this question, what are the gun laws in New Zealand? Also for a younger married couple from America , how much money would you think would be minimum amount of money that would be needed to move and get set up in New Zealand? Thank you

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад +1

      You won't need guns here and won't be allowed to carry them. You will have to be licensed to possess firearms - rifles are straightforward but there are requirements involved for being licensed to own anything else. Most firearm owners here have rifles and use them for hunting. Owning handguns is more complicated. Hope that helps!
      I really couldn't estimate an amount to move over with, I'm sorry. Obviously the more the better!

    Did the 67 000 a year figure count for 1 person or a family of 4?

      Andreja If you are not comfortably well off or own a start up business,don’t consider living in the Auckland area.Many established business’s with their staff are completely moving out of the supercity and starting again in other,cheaper sunnier North Island centres. Hundreds of millions are being invested in smaller centres ,in earthquake proof city centres,complete new suburbs,state of the art wine vintage plants and industrial estates.Consider NZ away from your port of entry ,Auckland. Medicine ,electronics,food processing,light aviation, plant breeding,biology ,marine research, tourism,electric fence manufacture,agricultural machinery design and manufacture ,these are just some of the fields of endeavour in the hinterland.In a Hawkes Bay machine shop I was staggered at the investment in computer controlled lathes,milling machines and grinders serving the needs primarily of the wine industry.Take a look at the provinces,some that have made fortunes for investors in the past. The confounded City of Sails does not grow the Pinus Radiata,thefat lambs,the Jazz apples,or the Cabernet Sauvignon ; nor the best Kiwifruit and sub tropicals.Research.

    Greetings to you and and your family .
    I just bumped into your channel.
    You guys made the right move for your kids and your grand kids. They will thank you for very much in the future.
    SA is getting worse by the day;
    1.Destruction of infrastructure.
    2Farm killings
    3Burning of trucks from Durban habour.
    5. People getting followed from the airport and robbed
    4The population explosion of people who want everything from the govt.
    The continued decline of the ANC and the ascendancy of the EFF to power sums up the future.

    Very informative video. Thanks. I have a bit of a peculiar question but have you ever encountered any lizards or geckos and/or frogs since you've moved to NZ, especially while working in the garden? If so, how often? Do geckos ever come into the house?

    My son has been diagnosed with extreme adhd. He is 8 and not one of those cases that people say is adhd but doesn't really need the medication. He can not function at all without the Meds. Will I be able to get his prescription filled there every month or is the medicine very limited there. That is my greatest concern.

    what kind job make you qualify to immigrate to New Zealand beside the short skilled list,

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад +2

      Any job if you can get a job offer before applying to immigration - it helps you get enough points. If you already have enough points without the job offer then you can deal with it once you are here.
      Being on the skilled shortage list really helps. There is a long term and immediate skills shortage list.

    Hi Jen, I am a nurse from America (and am sad about the direction my country is going in). I am single and really would like to move to New Zealand but the prospect of doing so solo is so terrifying. Your videos have been so helpful in allowing me to think thoroughly about this decision. Two questions I haven't been able to find yet. What town do you live in now? I would like to live in a mid-size to a small-city/town that is more sunny and warmer than not. Do you have any recommendations? And two: How much is university for your boys if they decide to go? I hope to not be single forever and I want my children to have a good, reasonable priced higher education. Thank you!

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад +1

      We live in a tiny village in south Taranaki. What would you consider mid size to small? If you prefer sunny and warm I'd avoid the South Island. I'm sorry but I'm not sure how much university costs as we aren't at that stage yet.

    I spent the typical backpacker year in NZ and have to say: NZ people CAN be very racist. I don't mean that backpackers are looked upon badly (because I understand there are so many of them and some behave very badly) but I have tried wwoofing and how some of the hosts were talking about the Maori people was utterly disgusting. Also, the immigration policies or more precisely the asylum policies of NZ make me so angry. Still, I love NZ and the people there. Every society has "problems" :)

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  8 лет назад

      So true. I'm sorry you encountered racism on your travels, that's disappointing.

      Applesandfries as a pakeha from nz myself, I'm not exposed to the racism, but I know that a lot of older people are racist, though on a whole I'd like to think that nz is a lot more progressive than a lot of countries however.

    We lived in NZ for 10 years but unfortunately due to circumstances we had to move back to UK. And as for you not wanting to live in the UK, it depends on where you lived. NZ is not that safe as I know this from experience.

    • @miyounova
      @miyounova 6 лет назад

      It depends more on what you want in life and your surroundings. I have been to the UK several times and know for a fact I'd never, ever, live there. But then, others think it's the best country in the world...(mainly natives though)

    hi , my name is hamad , I'm a muslim 28 years old Arab man , i live in NZ for 4 years , i like to add to the point you mentioned about racism in NZ, New Zealand have a nice diversity of racis and the original ppl in NZ are Not racist or pointy or anything like that, i loved my 4 years in there and i know that the religions at all it kinds is welcomed and understanding is not an issue with the country and the ppl , + the country have a real punish for though whom do any act of racism, but its not what holding the racism in the ppl , they are just a nice ppl its not the low that make it nice , good country to start a new life good low good ppl, the only issue with NZ is its too good to be true but it is , u hear all the nice things and i don't blame anyone when he thinks thats too good to be true.

      Ever hear of the dog breed called the Boerboel? They had to come up with that breed to attack any criminals who try to break into the master's property. That breed was developed and created in South Africa. That's how bad it is in that country.
