Alex is an animal. I laugh when people comment on here about who's the best drummer that's ever played with The Faceless. They're all awesome in their own different ways. Alex, Lyle, Marco, Chason, Aaron, Nick. You can watch videos of all of em kicking ass. What drum sets they use, how they set em up, the different hand and feet techniques they use. It's hard to say who's "the best" out of those guys! All are really world class drummers that can all play the music that the band writes. Otherwise they wouldn't of had the job. Just enjoy watching em shred those traps and blast beating ass away.
Thank you Alex! I was an old 80's metal head and guitar player that has been out of the game for a couple decades. Then I found you. Through you I have come to enjoy Conquering Dystopia, Monuments, Faceless, Good Tiger, Periphery, and other bands I would have no idea of. Metal is in such a great place, better then I could have ever imagined! The best musicians in the world playing the greatest music in the world!
Casey Lewis I remember when I got it too. I was new to this type of metal at the time, and hearing the intricacies of this stuff was mind blowing. Still is.
Only top tier drummer I know that can play with the headphones wired to the front on him and not from behind. Takes so much skill to not accidentally rip those headphones out at full force.
Comments about how Alex is better than Lyle, for a song which Lyle originally played in the record seems a bit disrespectful even if you think Alex is the best. Although, Alex is deserving of all the praise he receives for his craft, you just can't shun someone (Lyle) that way who has played an important role in death metal music. Both are awesome and creative drummers.
I don’t think anyone in their right mind would shun Lyle or either of them for that matter, Alex’s covers do have that effect on people though, even me at times. And the drums were not programmed, trust me.
Absolutely incredible. I haven't fully heard this song and never realized how insane this drum composition is. so brutal, and your execution as always is so fun to watch. always pick up some interesting note or technique when I watch your videos
Dude, you are pretty damn amazing. Please keep having fun and never lose that desire to challenge the entire field past the next evolution. You are a top quality player. Maybe one of the best Ive ever seen in over 35 years of study, practice, more study, more practice.......yeah.
Dude is a freakin monster!! I love watching him drum! It makes me wanna practice harder in hopes of becoming half the drummer he is. Lol. Keep on pounding Alex!!
jesus christ alex never EVER disappoints. I never thought i would admit it, but he is better than lyle cooper, and karene from animals as leaders....the two fucking guys that recorded the original tracks . alex is seriously INSANE.
Not trying to argue but i don't think he is "better" than Lyle Cooper. I mean, they are both beasts. Alex seems to be more, i don't want to say robotic, but he is like a machine. I mean that in a good way. Lyle seems to play more by feel. I was just impressed watching Lyle play shows with his eyes closed. He was feeling it and the parts he laid down while in TF were so tasty. Don't get me wrong, these 2 are in a league of their own. I just don't think one is really "better" than the other. Oh well, opinions and assholes you know!
I agree with you man, they are my two most favorite drummers, i wish lyle was more active with videos like alex, i love watching him play...the live set of them playing songs from planetary duality was on replay for so long on my youtube lmao but, i would disagree saying alex is robotic, songs like microscopic scale and any of the animals as leaders songs, have a natural feel yet, immaculate execution...part of why alex is one of the best to watch is his attention to replication and detail in his covers. no short cuts ever....i wouldnt say thats robotic tho shit, some would argue lyles performance on planetary duality was robotic....honestly, robotic sounds more like a compliment...its like being the terminator......they blast for robosatan
Abyssal Nocturnus Yeah i was just about to change my tune after watching this whole performance. Alex is most definitely feeling it! Like i said before, watching Lyle play with his eyes closed made me respect his ability that much more. I guess it's just muscle memory when you play a tune that many times. I am sure Alex could play most everything with his eyes closed if he so chose! Beasts the both of them.
I agree as well and Love the fact that Alex does covers as well it is nice to see one of your favorite drummers, well i'll have to admit and will probably get sh it for it but Alex is my favorite drummer atm just my opinion peeps nothing more =) peace all
Jay Page Don't know why anyone would give you shit for admiring one of the best drummers out there today. Dude is most definitely in the top 5 best ever in my book.
Controlled sound kick drum? That's a 20" kick, only come in that size, this is my favorite song from faceless, and daum bro nice cover, you seriously Are a drum cover God
Sick drumming as always Alex! I do have a question though.... when you're hitting the snare less often (ex. on 2 and 4 or something) it sounds like the snare has more attack and reverb. Was that added in the EQ or is just simply from hittin the fire out of it as opposed to when you do a blast beat, you obviously don't hit it as hard?
DrumPiper11 He probably does hit slightly less hard but the drum usually sounds different anyway if it's hit in very quick succession as opposed to allowing the skins more time to ring before being hit again.
It's due to most of the down beats being rimshots. It give's the snare a harder crack towards the top of the spectrum. I love the way they sound when used appropriately. You can always tell when drums have been programmed on a lot of modern metal tracks when all the hits sound the same, especially when rimshoting on blast-beats, etc :P
Gentlemen it's simple. Compression! :D To achieve the illusion of loudness, particularly at low volume levels, one utilizes compression to create a consistent volume level that also in turn creates a pumping effect in the sound. The amount of pumping depends on the amount of compression. In this case the reason you hear more attack and reverb on the slower paced rythms is due to the compression on the snare itself, as well as a sidechain compressor most likely, a multi-band compressor in the mastering chain, as well as a peak limiter/maximizer also in the mastering chain. When you strike the snare at slower paces the background sounds, such as the reverb, are brought up by the function of the compression. When you strike repetedly, in quick succession, the compressor remains active, therefore reducing the amount of background sound you hear. :)
Nearly 10 years later this play through is absolutely nuts. Rudi you’re a beast!!
Theres something about being a drummer and watching someone pull this off that is highly enjoyable to watch
I'm a guitarist, and I feel the same way, haha.
Drum porn rocks.
I mean, he is after all the drummer for The Faceless :P
John LaVar Music Was. Yeah, it's stupid.
Latest I heard he left the band. One less reason to listen to them.
James Gittins I’m a guitar player and it’s satisfying to watxh
This will never get old for me! Jesus christ I miss The Faceless soooo much. Please God help Michael get back on his feet for a new Faceless album!

Casey Lewis I remember when I got it too. I was new to this type of metal at the time, and hearing the intricacies of this stuff was mind blowing. Still is.

Lyle Cooper is Awesome..!!
lyle is a great drummer but the drums on the record are programmed. trust me.
Dude they are not programmed. You have lost the plot bruv
I don’t think anyone in their right mind would shun Lyle or either of them for that matter, Alex’s covers do have that effect on people though, even me at times.
And the drums were not programmed, trust me.
Sick drumming as always, but it really bothered me that there was no piano in the backing track
Even though I don't play drums, I love watching you kick the shit of your drums. Oddly inspiring and makes me wanna practice guitar more!

YESS.. Planetary Duality is you guys' best work yet. Thank you for doing a cover of this instead of a track from the new record!
Alex, I wonder if your parents watch your videos and are excited as me when you finally put up another video. This made my night last night
That was sick! Crazy thing is this is probably the easiest song off the album.
Sons Of Belial is probably the easiest off the album

Dude, you are pretty damn amazing.
Please keep having fun and never lose that desire to challenge the entire field past the next evolution.
You are a top quality player. Maybe one of the best Ive ever seen in over 35 years of study, practice, more study, more practice.......yeah.

26 dislikes explanation: when they watch this they died to excitement and their forehead hit the dislike button by mistake right before they died.
