Green Day is really pop punk. Their earlier stuff off 39/Smooth, Kerplunk!, Dookie etc are more punk punk. Try “Welcome to Paradise” or “Longview” This album is a “rock opera” and brought them multiple Grammy’s including Rock Album and Record of the Year. Also this album and its follow up were turned into a broadway musical that won a Grammy
Green Day aren't really pop punk though they sound nothing like the other bands heck if you go by pop punk I'd say maybe Dookie was but other than that they went into a different route changing up their style
This song IS my life story, no lie. I've been alone ALL my life. I've NEVER been in love, never dated anyone or been in a relationship EVER. At least I got my shadow.
They have so much great music especially from the 90s! I recommend you check out Hitchin a Ride, Geek Stink Breath, and Minority (the explicit version), all bangers!
Green Day was woven through my whole childhood, and American Idiot was the album out while I was in high school and being an outcast and weirdo theater kid. This song (and Holiday and American Idiot, the title track) were all over the radio then, and I remember some school pep rallys and stuff using it because it was popular. Love Green Day
I almost got this song title tattooed on my leg years ago. I’m glad I didn’t as about 3 years after I drew the tattoo design, I had both legs amputated. But I felt his song as soon as it came out. I’ve been listening to Green Day since the early-mid 90’s in middle school.
Dude it's been awhile since you concentrated on your reactions, welcome back! Love your stuff keep it up man! Also Green Day did start off as punk, but like any artist they changed their style and sound after awhile. I'd describe them now more just exactly as you said, pop-punk. Their songs are more catchy and poppy then when they first started off.
Armstrong said he “nicked” the song title from a Gottfried Helnwein painting featuring James Dean walking alone. In 2004, Green Day released a punk rock opera called American Idiot. The concept album is a coming-of-age story about a character called Jesus of Suburbia. Though the album was created against the backdrop of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” is a personal tale of feeling lost in the big city. The Green Day singer said the song describes his experience of feeling isolated in New York City. In the story, it follows Jesus of Suburbia getting away from his hometown, yet still reeling in despair. In Helnwein's Boulevard of Broken Dreams, he parodies Edward Hopper's 1942 painting Nighthawks.
First thing want to say go Ramones. This song when it came out was actually my phone ring lyrics connected to me at that place I was at in my life. Glad your back much love ❤️ ❤❤ thanks for this song react
This is from the album "American Idiot" which is a concept album The entire album tells a story (think Tommy by the Who). There is/was actually a musical on Broadway based on "American Idiot." The entire album is absolutely amazing and you should definitely check it out. Green Day's earlier stuff is definitely more punk punk then their later stuff. Check out songs from Kerplunk, Dookie, Nimrod.
To be fair, this is probably the most commercial track off their most commercial album. For more of a punk vibe their older stuff is great. Even the title track off American Idiot is much more of what you probably think of for punk. The album came out when I was in college. I'd listened to Green Day for years, but this song will always make me think of late nights writing my thesis in a closed coffee shop and legitimately worrying that I wasn't going to graduate.
Your comment on this as a reflection of the American Dream is closer than you might realize. The song is from American Idiot, and almost all of the songs on the album speak to the loss/disillusionment of the American Dream and betrayal of the American people by politics or society. The album is remarkably cohesive and worth listening to from start to finish, but the individual songs stand alone well. This song comes right after Holiday (in fact, on the CD, they're one track.)
This entire album has a number of soundtracks of my life in my early 20's. I feel like a fossil now 😂 Edit to add you should listen to Soul Asylum's Runaway Train and Candlebox's Far Behind. Two 90's Alt Rock classics. IMHO
This video always cracks me up because he is constantly talking about walking alone on this lonely road meanwhile, he has his two best friends with him the whole time. The video is kind of oxymoronic to the actual lyrics of the song 😂
You can be surrounded by people who you love and care for, who also care about you just as much, and still feel lonely. There's a sense of disconnect where they could be right beside you, even touching you, and they feel millions of miles away.
Laughed at this reaction but loved it too. Always love watching your reactions. Would love to see a reaction to 'Jesus of Suburbia' and/or 'Holiday' by Green Day please
When I was young (early 80's) listening to Ozzy when Blizzard of Oz just came out, there could have been a warning to not listen to if depressed, but the music actually brought you up because it made you feel like there are others out there with the same issues. Sometimes you don't want to hear yourself think. Geen Day has the same effect.
One of Green Days first shows as Green Day instead of Sweet Children had them opening for Operation Ivy's last show at Gilman Street. They came out of the Gilman Street scene which basically birthed Pop Punk as we know it. This Track is on American Idiot which was their huge gamble Punk Rock Opera concept album telling the tale of St. Jimmy The Jesus of Suburbia. Album marked a major turning point for the band. The album that broke them big was Dookie which sold like 10 million copies. Their Follow up Nimrod was a much darker and harder edged album that cost them some fairweather fans. Some track suggestions, J.A.R., Geek Stink Breath, Longview, Disappearing Boy, Hitchin a Ride, She, One of My Lies, When I Come around, Christie Road, and American Idiot. Fun Facts. They did a side Project with Devo called The Network - Money Money 2020, and released a 60's style Garage Rock album as the Foxbourgh Hot Tubs.
A band that goes hand and hand with Green Day IMO is Rancid. I think because Green Day is what got me into Rancid, they came up in/from the same scene and are good friends (billie was asked to join the band before Green Day blew up) their sound is definitely more what people think of when you say punk. Green Day has always been on the poppy side, but punk is also an attitude, and they've never lost that.
You're uncle was right, but green day were influential in the creation of the pop punk sub genre. They got started in the bay area punk scene as teenagers. Pop punk, however, as a genre has nothing to do with commercialism or commercial success. It was and is about blending more melodic riffs and other melodies with punk stylings.
I was a teen when they were popular, and I don't remember anyone calling them Punk. They were considered super super commercial and nowhere near Punk, where I lived. Laughable that anyone thinking Green Day making a song about divisiveness could be a good thing, though. Of all the bands. I never listened to them so never had a dog in the fight, but still.
Idk if you have yet, but I am dying to hear some Primus "Bob" or " My name is mud," The singing is different, but Les Claypool is a boss on a bass!! Always, Smashing Pumpkins "Disarm." That's just a great song. 1 more would be Annie Lennox " Love some for a vampire," my son and I love watching you. You're awesome!
PLEASE check out American Idiot. That's probably got more of that punky Green Day you're looking for ❤️ Dookie, Nimrod and American Idiot were my Green Day period. Loved their albums. Definitely a vibe
So yes, Green Day is a pop punk band, and it's not an insult I think. It is off of the American Idiot album. More punk sounding songs are American Idiot and Know Your Enemy. Green Day is a great band
Green Day is Pop Punk with some alternative flair, but oldschool Green Day was more punk. Still pop punk, but more punk. They were obviously heavily inspired by classic punk though. BJ wrote this song after the master tapes for the album they were working on got stolen. They decided to start from scratch and created this concept album. He supposedly came up with this song while walking around NYC contemplating on what to do after the theft of the master tapes. He used that experience to incorporate it into the story of the album. I think it worked out in the end for 'em. Saw them play in concert this year and they still got it too. This album is more commercialized, but it's a concept album and the story is fantastic. You'd like reading all of the lyrics. edit: You have to do this album in order though. Songs blend together and there's a powerful story. Worth checking out. edit 2: BJ struggles heavily with mental health issues, so he speaks from the heart. During the concert he gave a speech on staying strong while fighting mental illness. It made me emotional when he said that.
The riff of this song sounds incredibly similar to “Wonderwall” by Oasis. So much so, that DJ Party Ben released “Boulevard of Broken Songs”, a mashup of those two songs as well as Eminem’s “Sing for the Moment” (the latter because it samples Aerosmith’s “Dream On” and DJ Ben couldn’t get the rights to directly sample the Aerosmith song. It’s a crazy and fantastic compilation, especially of you’re familiar with the originals.
Since the last time I heard this song, I have since heard Johnny Cash's "Solitary Man" which I then learned is a cover of Niel Diamond's original. I prefer Johnny Cash's version, myself. But I wonder, if maybe these guys didn't want to do something similar with this song. Back when genres actually separated people from each other. I still do not enjoy country music so most of the stuff johnny Cash did, doesn't appeal to me at all. But this song, kind of explains why I did not get into Green Day growing up. This is the song that was on the radio. This is the one everyone in my peer group loved and there was something about it I didn't. I think it's the homage they were painting, that I couldn't see, or hear... I now enjoy this song.
@@danrumble74 Yes! I commented something similar. Ramones, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, The Damned, just to name a few, are what I think of when I think of punk. Johnny Rotten was the epitome of punk to me.
When they hit mainstream with Dookie they became more pop punk. Prior to that they were just punk. This entire album, American Idiot (2004) is a concept album. Definitely worth listening to the entire thing and the videos.
You should react to the whole album „American Idiot“. It‘s actually a Rock Opera that has a story going trough all the songs and it‘s one of the best if even not the best album of Green Day.
The earlier catalog was more punkish, but yes, I remember the old punk too. I love Green Day but I don't consider them punk. Maybe alternative rock or rock/pop and even prog rock ("Jesus of Suburbia" from the album, American Idiot). This song is also from that album. It was a huge release for them that was eventually turned into a Broadway musical. It spawned a bunch of radio hits. I suggest listening to "Jesus of Suburbia", I think it is their masterpiece song on a great album.
American idiot, was the album name, this album was pretty good, imo, green day came out around the same time as,bink182,the offspring, and sum41,I wanna say late 90s,good stuff 😊❤
Holiday is my favorite song from American idiot. The album is a banger all around, though, and I recommend you buy the album and listen to it in order. It's one of the few concept albums I enjoy listening to.
Green Day was the first commercially viable punk band. You could say they brought punk to different communities the way Eminem did for rap. The problem with being a commercially successful punk band is that the hardcore punk community largely shuns commercial success. After they blew up they went back to some of the venues they used to play and didn’t exactly receive a warm welcome. All that being said, I love Green Day and American Idiot is the album that got me into punk. (It’s a rock opera and should really be listened to start-to-finish at least once.) But their earlier albums through this one are the ones I really connect with. IMO the albums after this one had a few good songs, but largely flopped for me
Please do Holiday next, Holiday and Boulevard of Broken Dreams are both of the album American Idiot (which recently had its 20 year anniversary and all the music vids from the album got a 4k update) the whole album is an absolute masterpiece and is 100% worth the listen
I am horrible for denoting genres they all bleed into each other now lol. Curious what you would classify Billy Talent's genre as. Officially they started as punk then moved to alt rock, but regardless I highly recommend. Specifically "Devil In A Midnight Mass" or "Red Flag"
You said you didn’t know what American Idiot was? It’s the title track off of American Idiot album. So I think that should be your next reaction. “21 guns” is a great track, lyrically. “Brain stew, Warning, Waiting or Minority” are all great tracks.
Hey, Cliff! I absolutely love Green Day. You want punk “punk” from Green Day give Brain Stew/Jaded a listen (technically two tracks but they run into one another, just like Boulevard runs off the end of the song Holiday). Other more punky ones from GD include… American Idiot Know Your Enemy 2000 Light Years Away F.O.D. Welcome to Paradise Outsider (Ramones cover) Look Ma No Brains (second single off this year’s album “Saviours”) Also check out Green Day’s side projects The Network (Ivankkka is a Nazi, Spike, Right-Hand-a-Rama) Foxboro Hot Tubs (Stop Drop n Roll, The Pedestrian [my personal favourite happy track ever]) And The Longshot (Kill Your Friends) Enjoy! And happy Christmas/New Year, dude ❤🎉
Yeah I'm GenX & I'm with you on what is 'punk'. The Ramones, Black Flag, Sex Pistols etc. is what I grew up with knowing as 'punk'. Green Day for me is like punk-inspired pop rock. I like it. I just don't consider it 'punk'.
They caught so much flack from their Bay area fans after they got picked up by a record label. They were called sell outs. Apparently they were supppsed to only play in punk dives forever.
I'm surprised this song wasn't banned in the US, it doesn't show the light fluffy, sugar coated, American dream. American idiot was a world wide massive selling album. Never listen to "Blue October" whilst depressed.
Have you reacted to Holiday from Green Day? If not, I would love for you to react to that one because it's my favorite from them. If you have already reacted to it, I'm going to have to search to see...
That's not how the dynamic of music works when you are sad :) please listen to sad music if you feel like it. It will let you know that there are other people that understand you, you will have your feelings put into words and it will be easier to understand yourself and digest it. These "chemicals" you talk about are meant to make the person less sad, but right away they will notice the problem didn't go away, but now they have less weight on their backs and are more capable of fighting back. Anything can be adicting and music is made of a balance of repetition and change... almost all the time it is a tool for sad people to get up and be able to move on.
First 😂Hope you had a wonderful Christmas 🎄 21 Guns from them is my favorite. Please check out April Wine..Roller extended version 🙏 Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
There's some punk stuff on American idiot but it's Mainly pop punk. Jesus of suburbia is one of my favorites from the album. Green day in the early 90s is what people are saying is punk
Green Day have done an excellent job at keeping punk alive. Punk is attitude and rebellion. The Clash are great punk to me 👍
It's about no one understanding or being on your side. No matter how many are around.
The green day crowd singing Bohemian Rhapsody is worth checking out ❤
I was in that crowd and it was amazing, they do it at all UK gigs
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT!!!
Yes. Ramones, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, The Damned, just to name a few I think of when I think of punk.
Rancid as well edit add the clash in there
Not mentioning Bad Religion when naming bands with iconic punksound is criminal
Being a little older now I can recognize this being about depression and anxiety. I see why so many resonated with it
Loving the nostalgia that this channel of yours is giving me! I was a senior in college when this came out lol.
Green Day is really pop punk. Their earlier stuff off 39/Smooth, Kerplunk!, Dookie etc are more punk punk.

1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours barely left my CD player.
Dookie is their most "pop-punk" album to date. Not to say it's like the pop punk of the 2000s but it's undoubtably pop punk
This song IS my life story, no lie. I've been alone ALL my life. I've NEVER been in love, never dated anyone or been in a relationship EVER.

It sounds sad from the outside but the comfort of being able to stand, alone, in the open, is very comforting.

Green Day is fine but the Ramones are legendary.

This song and the album was a FU to the George W Bush era, the invasion of Iraq with the non-existent weapons of mass distruction.
Great song to start the day after Christmas LOL. Love it.

Green Day is definitely pop punk but they had huge resurgence in the 2000s after having a huge fan base in the 90s.

Other more punky ones from GD include…
American Idiot
Know Your Enemy
2000 Light Years Away
F.O.D.
Welcome to Paradise
Outsider (Ramones cover)
Look Ma No Brains (second single off this year’s album “Saviours”)
Also check out Green Day’s side projects The Network (Ivankkka is a Nazi, Spike, Right-Hand-a-Rama)
Foxboro Hot Tubs (Stop Drop n Roll, The Pedestrian [my personal favourite happy track ever])
And The Longshot (Kill Your Friends)
Enjoy! And happy Christmas/New Year, dude ❤🎉
All of these!!! ❤❤
@ 😁💕
@@Goddzi I’d also say check out Green Day adjacent bands The Interrupters and Prima Donna Band
@ yeah, good shout! Although, the main one I really know by The Interuptors is their cover of Bad guy by Billie Eilish. Great version though 👍🏻
Brain Stew/Jaded is a banger that really cranks up the punk. Check it out.
I would say they are modern punk. More than pop, I would say there is a lot of alt rock in there sound
green day is POP punk. whoever recommended them as the pinnacle was wrong.
Definitely pop punk!! Certainly not The Sex Pistols or Ramones!!!
I'm surprised this song wasn't banned in the US, it doesn't show the light fluffy, sugar coated, American dream.
American idiot was a world wide massive selling album.
Never listen to "Blue October" whilst depressed.
They are rock, pop-punk. They are not a punk band. I like them but would never call them punk
They are more Punk'esk, Check out Generation X for 70s PUNK !!!
Have you reacted to Holiday from Green Day? If not, I would love for you to react to that one because it's my favorite from them. If you have already reacted to it, I'm going to have to search to see...
@@kurtpflegl30 it also runs straight into this track
❤❤❤
Please check out April Wine..Roller extended version 🙏 Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
@@RockinMamaT he’s done 21 Guns
1 I'm never this early so what's popping bro
2 I'm glad RUclips not just removing my subs between you ghost n scru face jean I always gotta re sub
I love this track it was my introduction to green day this calls for you to react to American idiot 😅
There's some punk stuff on American idiot but it's Mainly pop punk. Jesus of suburbia is one of my favorites from the album. Green day in the early 90s is what people are saying is punk
American idiot is obe of my favourite songs of theirs
Cliff check out their song 21 guns
Please do nofx seeing double at the triple rock- great punk song and video
Check out Dropkick Murphys for something closer to punk
Please checkout headstrong by Trapt... its a banger for sure... and nobody's really reacts to it
Cliff do fastball songs called the way
Try 21 Guns or Jesus of Suburbia
Green Day is absolutely not punk. They're alternative rock at most.
