What's going on everybody?! SeanPierceJohns here with this week's edition of "Stompbox Saturday"! This week, we're taking a look at another pedal from TC Electronic: the Forcefield Compressor.
Another member of their "cheap pedal" line, this compressor pedal can be hand for under $100 and is a great gateway into the world of compression and dynamics processing. The simple three-knob layout provide a lot more control than your classic Dyna Comp or Ross but does so with less noise than those pedals that have come before.
Get funky, pick out some chicken, and maybe add a little secret sauce to your high gain sound. Check it out! You won't regret it.

Oh man, that Framus 😍
Nice review too, of course, Sean. Cheers !
Love your videos Sean. Everytime your face pops up, I know I'm going to get a really informative and cool video. Thanks for all your great reviews!!!
greg dennis man Greg, that’s like one of the nicest comments I’ve gotten in a long time! Thanks so much 👍
Awesome video Sean
Great tone in that opening jam!
Your tone through my monitors is s-aweeeet!
Thanks Anthony!
Got one recently, it’s an excellent pedal.
It really easy...and considering it's under $80 it's mind-blowing
@@SeanPierceJohnson 2 years later and I just got one for £29! It’ll be my first compressor pedal. Really looking forward to trying it out
@@Jim_Thomas_Draper fantastic! Enjoy it and play it in good health
Thanks! Definitely intrigued as a first compression pedal for bringing the extreme highs and lows a little closer together on a sloppily played nylon-electric. Any downside at all having the cords come out the back rather than the sides?
Hey David! Thanks for watching. I'm sure you'll enjoy this. Truthfully, most people PREFER the cables in this orientation, even going so far as to dismiss perfectly amazing pedals because they don't have "top mounted jacks".
@@SeanPierceJohnson Ah, good to know! Ordered one btw. : )
Hi there Sean, great video!
Would you say this will do the job well for a bass guitar too?
Hi Adrian! Never got to try it on bass.
But I’d probably look for something more geared towards bass. Those low frequencies could make the compressor overwork
Hi Sean. I really like your channel. Thanks to this video I bought this pedal compressor. I'd like to ask you to make one review of Boss Metal Core ML-2
Hi Sergio! Thanks so much for the kind words. I appreciate the request but I won't be making a demo of the Metal Core. I played one several years ago and did not like it at all. I don't think it's worthwhile to demo gear I don't like and I don't want to put negativity out into the world. I apologize but I hope you understand. Cheers
4:56 - I might be wrong but I think this is actually the fastest setting, isn't it?
I have electric guitar, and regular speaker, where there isn’t coming out the electric guitar sound. Will this compressor sustainer make a difference ? (Thx)
Hi Ewelina,
I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Do you mean you have a guitar and no amplifier? You just have a speaker?
If you do have just a speaker, a compressor isn't going to be a substitute for having a good amplifier.
Speakers by themselves do not have any amplification power, they just reproduce sounds being amplified.
Great video. I am thinking about picking one up, they are available on 'verb for $50 or so. I've never used a compressor so I don't know how much I will use it.
It’s a GREAT compressor! Not just a great $50 compressor. It’s a great one...period.
I bought one back in January, and it's always there in my setup. I love it, and it doesn't make daft squizxkly noises like thos cheap mini pedals do (I sent one of those back!)
I just got one of these. I notice when it is on and I'm not playing it really seems to amplify the modulation of my mxr phaser. When the compressor is off, I don't hear that same background noise. I have the force field 1st in the chain, then boss overdrive, then mxr phaser, then ditto pedel, then the amp (1980 Delux Reverb).
Eric Edelman hi Eric. Thanks for watching and your question. This is a fairly normal thing with gain staging pedals (including Boosts, drives, comps, etc.)
The idea is, you are increasing the input gain going into the compressor, therefore increasing amplified noise. Lots of compressor pedals do this...mostly old school designs like Ross/Dyna Comp Etc.
Don’t worry, it’s working properly.
@@SeanPierceJohnson But didn't Eric say he had the compressor FIRST in the chain? So the input to the compressor is the same as always (the guitar). I can imagine, however, that if the compressor is on and boosting the level, then the extra gain would be picked up by successive pwdals in the chain. Maybe.
Use before or after an Amp simulator? Straight into a mixing board. Thx
put this into your amp sim...like you would use with an amp
Helpful review. Now, would it work for bass?
Indra Gupta I’ve not tried it but for $60-70 it can’t hurt to pick one up and try it out.
Awesome pedal
Indeed it is! Thanks for watching
The way you played on this demo made me take me ego conpressor off and use the forcefield for a night. Lol
and what was your experience?
Would you recommend it?
Thanks!
I got one on my bass, and agree with almost all of your review…. My attack seems to work opposite to yours, but the rest of the pedal is as good as you say…. Handles the low end well…
in fairness, I may have gotten the control wrong (it's bound to happen when you basically have 20 minutes to get ready to shoot a video). but that's AWESOME that it works well for bass!
@@SeanPierceJohnson yeah, thought it was some new "Australasian" version of the pedal, where we 'down-under' do things anticlockwise by default XD
hahahaha
Very very good review. ... it sounds great. ..I'm going to get one. ...I'm having trouble matching my gold lace sensor strat against my les paul.... this will boost and also give me some more interesting options. ...
skaboosh thanks buddy! You’ll be satisfied with this for sure (and especially the amount of money you’ll spend).
Hope it works out for you!
Thank you. I got it. It IS great. ... fIrst compressor that's done exactly what I hoped for...I've had a few...they all got sold. ..this one works great with my strat and stays.... merci monsieur! 👍
Can I use this as a boost for the boss katana, by using the level ?
Yes you can. Keep in mind though, you will be boosting the compressed signal...which can add some unwanted noise.
@@SeanPierceJohnson does anyone know if the katana compresses all output generally or just when the 'compressor' effect is turned on?
@@Tone-Oz the compressor on the Katana is only active if you choose it to be active. i think on some versions of the Katana you can't even access the Compressor effect unless you're using the tone studio
@@SeanPierceJohnson great thanks for looking into it. I have the mach 1 50w and really like it. I think I heard that the 'brown sound' channel also has some compression. Otherwise the compression effect needs to be selected which I think is in bank B. PS I just ordered the TC Electronic! Cheers
I love mine! :-)
it's an awesome compressor and can't be beaten at its price point
Nice!
thanks Luis!
good demo thanks
Thanks for watching!
helped me understand this pedal better...
5:35
That was not a clean tone (2:28) ...
i mean...it sounds pretty clean to me. sure there's a little bit of breakup but i'm not playing a Fender amp here
i feel a pity when i imagine you changing all this guitar strings!!!
Diego Boari not sure if this is supposed to be an insult or joke...or serious concern.
SeanPierceJohnson it’s a joke, man!! Sorry for my bad english!! While i was watching your video, i notes your guitars on the wall and thinking “wow”! I bought this pedal yesterday and i was wathing some vodeos about it. I thought that your video help me very well about this pedal! Thank you and i’m sorry for something!!
Le diste en la madre con llamarlo barato.
It's punchy but I don't like the mid scoop.
what mid scoop?
Would be more accurate if you use the right playing style.
What does that even mean? Anyone playing any style can use a compressor. Your insult falls flat bro.
