I’m just about done with my first “serious” app and really don’t have much of a clue where to go from here. So this is very timely for me. My current goal is to build a portfolio but really, working for myself is the dream. So thank you. I’ll def be keenly following the episodes.
Congrats on your app! The topic of portfolio of apps vs. one app is something I plan on covering in future episodes. It's a big question every indie dev has.
This show looks very promising Sean! And you just convinced me to bump up my ASA budget as well. It's still way lower than your budget, but pumping back that initial revenue into the app is my philosophy as well.
The value of this podcast could be incredible! Are you serious? It could be a game changer, like me who have many ideas but don't know where to start will love it!
Catching up with the show. Great start, keep them coming 🎉 Absolutely agree that it is doable to make a living from own app development and that is more fun than working on somone else dreams
Sean - excellent new show! I am a retired electrical engineer who is writing an app I’ve wanted for myself my whole life. I’m now developing that app and have been looking into marketing and business topics. The show is exactly on target for me. This is very exciting! Thank you so much, and good luck with your app. 🤞
Hey Sean, do you plan to publish your podcast as audio-only on all known podcast platforms? I hope it won't get into multi-hour conversations, which are difficult to digest. Personally, I'd love a 30-minute long episodes I can listen to/watch on my lunch break. Good luck, I'm already subscribed!
Hey Matthew, yes there will be an audio only version on podcast platforms. It takes a few days to get setup for a new podcast and flowing to all platforms. My target run-time for each episode is 30 minutes, so sounds like it's right for you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for driving content in this direction. I’ve been trying to piece together things from App Masters, my Mobile Development degree from Full Sail, Medium articles, and am working towards building a small subscription-based app for a targeted community…which obviously needs marketing and ASO to be successful. My struggle-point is developing ideas for applications and feel that the App Store is saturated and almost everything that could be built has been built. Whether that’s a lie or truth in reality, I’m right there with you…we have this ability…so let’s figure out how to use it for our own financial success and reduce the dependency for Corporate America to help us make ends meet.
Been Following you since your initial iOS interview tips video series. Thanks for helping the community (Me included of course) and wish you all the very best.
This series will bring a lot of value to Indie devs. I'd like to see a follow up with those who started to apply guidance from this series and how it changed their outcomes. I expect this could be a 1 to 2 year timeline but would be very helpful to devs.
I will be following this closely. I recently became a professional and need to start my own projects. I know too much to not build something amazing. My main rockblock was feeling like its going to be unsuccesful, but thats the actual failure.
It's not easy to make a successful app, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go for it. Best of luck and I hope this series helps. Would love to hear your feedback so I can make it better.
Hey Sean, I’ve been following your content for a long while now and it’s been very interesting to learning things here and there and improve my skills. However, once I’ve gotten my first junior iOS job I’ve had plenty to learn there (and still do) with a lot of experienced devs to ask questions and learn from. Now THIS has me excited as I’ve been thinking of starting to make some of my own apps and publishing them on the AppStore. This is exactly the motivation people need to get started (at least that’s what I think) so I’m really excited for this new content you’ll be making! :)
Go ahead and continue this podcast, I think for most indie developers including me the marketing, ASO, and all the topics you have mentioned are blury, and hard to achieve any progress in this field, thank you for your efforts to create this helpful podcast.
23:55 I'm not sure if this is good or bad; the app total turnover going down 2%, i e. What I do ask though is have there been too many people aiming at selling apps rather than building nieche content in which the user needs? I mean if you want reoccuring what users are willing to pay for is something that enables / arms the users to do more. There are clearly several markets out there, this far I have always work on productivity in particular workflow management, in which clearly have different KPIs for success than that of the entertainment industry.
Hi Sean! Thanks for all the videos and courses you have already done. I've learnt a lot from them and today I've landed an Intern iOS Developer position. Also. I hope this live show/podcast will inspire me to create my own app to make a profit :). Thanks again!
Really looking forward to these videos. Thank for bringing us along as you work on this. I'm starting to work on building a portfolio and look for an app idea. I wondered if you had also considered asking established RUclipsrs to promote your app.
There is a whole genre of RUclipsrs who teach other RUclipsrs how to RUclips :). I plan on reaching out to them after I have initial traction and the product improves a bit.
Will your app not compile for iOS 15? I'm on iPhone SE1 in which appears to have terminal OS version 15.x; will try to install on iPad, downloaded fine on my iPad 2018 Pro.

This video came right on time! I’m currently learning iOS development because it’s something I’ve been passionate about for a while but I also just started a career in cybersecurity where my skill set does well for me. I feel would be foolish of me to abandon this career path in the current job market. I’d come to the conclusion that I was just gonna make my own apps and create another income from them so this series will be very helpful. Thanks Sean.

I appreciate the feedback W0mbles! This was the first episode, so naturally there will be iterations and improvements. Thanks for taking the time and I've noted these. As for the stock footage, I get what you are saying. Does the stock footage bother you only when it relates to showing software developers? Or all of it? The issue is that I need visuals to emphasize a certain point and just to break up the monotony of staring at my face for 30 minutes. Of course, I don't have to time or resources to go film that stuff myself, so I rely on stock footage.
@@seanallen Sean, I really wouldn't worry about you being monotonous. You'll find that when people have something interesting, useful to say, the audience will pay attention. The stock footage is usually employed as a distraction or filler, for when the actual content is lacking. IMO, this "visual imperitive" can actually harm the creator's message. Plus, I think the imagery themselves are psychological poison, due to their falseness, but I can go on all day about that. :p I think your content, your message is enough. Interesting insights. When choosing the stock footage my mind was focused on imagery to help illustrate my point. It didn't occur to me that the perfectly shot footage of developers could send the wrong message.

Hi Sean! First of all congrats for your channel! It totally rocks! … I wanted to ask you: I totally love swift and native iOS development, but… Aren’t you missing some important share over the Android users market? What is your thinking regarding developing cross-platform vs. Native platform. Thanks! (Ps. Sorry for my bad english, its not my native language)
I think it depends on your product and the market you want to target. Of course, I'm missing out on all the RUclipsrs who are Android users, but I wanted to build a product build for, and native to, Apple platforms (with syncing between devices). It was important to be to be a native app. Also, I only know Swift and iOS so that plays a significant role in the decision.
I’m looking forward to this series and how things unfold. I have a moderately successful game app in the App Store, which has allowed me to finally be independent. A lot of the things you said resonated with me. I’m curious, would you consider developing for Android and the web as well? I found not limiting myself to just iOS was helpful in achieving a higher level of success. Thanks again. I’ll be watching.
Happy to hear you enjoyed the first episode. More to come! Android is potentially on the long-term roadmap. But only after I've proven success on iOS. A big part of what I wanted from the product was that native Apple experience. I know that really narrows my market, but that's where I'm starting. Best of luck with the game!
That's really so inspiring! Thank you for sharing this knowledge and experience, because it's just priceless and I believe that lots of people charge huge chunks of money for what you are sharing for free. Can't wait to see your app making 1M ARR
For myself, as a user, showing the paywall at the end of the onboarding is okay. Either there's enough info during the onboarding to make a commitment to subscribe, or there isn't. Odds are, there won't be enough because I won't know what it's actually like to use the app or whether I'm likely to use it enough to be worth shelling out $$$. For myself, as a user, showing the "please rate this app" at the end of the onboarding is a mistake, because I haven't used the app, and it's entirely possible the app's usability is really bad. Of course, I can re-rate the app at any time as long as it's available in the App Store, but it's still an annoyance. In truth, I rate the apps I use regularly or which I find to be awful, without being asked.
I agree that asking for rating is a lesser user experience and it seems counter intuitive. But, check out the next episode to see the initial results (spoilers - it's working). Enough people are just hitting 5 stars and moving on. After my app gets enough downloads to rank well, I plan on pulling back on this a bit.
@@seanallen 100% This series is going to help a lot of people, and it is crazy that over 6-7 years ago I was on the grind to be a dev and your videos uncovering your challenges with the interview process helped me realize I was not the only one breaking through this crazy barrier. Always thankful man! ☕
I agree and I address that at the 2:44 mark of the video. I plan on bringing in experts and other successful indie devs to discuss topics while I share my experience and what I'm doing with my own app. I've never claimed to be an authority (yet).
It might be hard to find successful developers to be involved because they are likely too busy working on their apps rather than wasting time on social media.
I need to have a professional take a crack at the logo, but I was going for an old school computer look so that was intentional. Why do you say the title (Build, Ship, Profit) is unfriendly to iOS dev?
@@seanallen The title of the video is ok, I was meaning the title of the app, I'm not an youtuber so maybe I shouldn't be the one to judge but the title "Creator view" sounds more like a component for an app rather than a product in itself. Nevertheless, I really hope you succeed and wish you all the best with the app and the podcast. Are you familiar with the way Paul Graham advices founders at Y Combinator to grow their products from the ground up? He has a saying about making products that don't scale and then try to sell the product to at least one person, once you have one, you can repeat the process 10 times and then a 100 times and so on. In such a manner you basically grow based on the customer needs (which basically facilitates the natural growth) rather than just pushing your app up the ratings and hope for the best.
Ah, I see what you mean about the app name. Creator View doesn't have any developer connotation to a RUclipsr, but I see where you're coming from as a developer. I'm familiar with Paul Graham and have consumed YC's content for years now. It's timeless advice that I'm taking in. It's tough to share ALL my thoughts and EVERYTHING I'm doing in a RUclips video - but I'm all onboard with YC's advice.

It's tough to share ALL my thoughts and EVERYTHING I'm doing in a RUclips video - but I'm all onboard with YC's advice.
looking forward to this new series
Thanks Jason!
