Less than two years later when I stopped playing I had to accept that we were playing a game that might as well be a different one. Not gonna say better or worse, but it certainly was a completely different one. And that was about 15 years ago.
I am just coming back into the game and this perfectly encapsulates how I feel. Last tournament I played I literally lost every round in one turn. There is a lot to learn and relearn.
It just evolved into every card having a special ability and if every card has a special ability, they’re not really special abilities anymore and overcomplications have less heart. The original format is still the most exciting. To win with monsters that have little or no abilities. Truest strategy!
Meanwhile, Magic the Gathering I have been playing with my same old cards for the last 25 years, and they have still been relevant. If I grabbed my Yugioh deck I had from 25 years ago and tried to play with it today, I wouldn't get a second turn.
This is why I play magic. At least I get a chance to play a game before getting steam rolled. And also because you can actually read the cards and know what they do as opposed to reading an entire guide that explains a whole combo and possible interactions.
I remember back in the day when I played Yu-Gi-Oh. I spent half my paycheck buying boosters just to keep up with the people I was playing with. At some point I realized that this was a game I had to really drop money on and I already have other habits to support, ya dig? Fast forward 10 years later I'm hearing about link summons, XYZ cards and synchro summons and I decided I was never going back. Too complicated.
Basically me when I stop doing anything yugioh after Yugi beat Atem and then coming back in Pendulum era to be completely overwhelmed with the concept of Synchro and Xyz
This is exactly how I feel with the current age of Yu-Gi-Oh! lol. Master Duel needs that classic mode to become a full-time mode for us OG players (I can never keep up with the new wave of rules, summons, negates, etc.)
this hits harder because when I tried getting back into yugioh I told my friend about the idea and we decided to build a deck with out telling each other what deck we were making. I bought a starter deck with a couple of cards for my extra deck , and my friend decided to buy a meta deck of the time. Let’s just say I never got to play the game so I just never played again 😂
Sometimes, I run a Robin in my deck just to watch people surrender the second I play it. It's in my dragonmaid deck with no other winged beasts. It's literally there just for mindgames. In master duel I add one random winged beast just so I can activate the effect and give my opponent like ten seconds to surrender while I pretend to go through options. The amount of free wins I've gotten with just having it is ridiculous.
"This is called a special summon." "What?" "Have you never played monster reborn?" "No I just normal summon dark magician" "....You mean tribute summon?" "Whats a tribute summon?"
In his defense, the knowledgeable player should really start out with explaining the differences in the two games before continuing. And the starting point of that could be the difference in monster summons
If he’s shocked at more than 1 summon. Wait until his opponent has a whole turn, when it’s his turn.

One dude in master duel video game kept summoning so much he ran out of time and I won lol
"Next, Im gonna teach you how to stunlock your opponent."
"Stunlock, whats that?"
"The reason we're the only ones in here still playing Yu-Gi-Oh."
What’s funny is that, he was going at a very slow pace, and yet he was still confused as to what’s happening…
Game became 1 player and I can’t bring myself to play it anymore. RIP 😢
Basically me when I stop doing anything yugioh after Yugi beat Atem and then coming back in Pendulum era to be completely overwhelmed with the concept of Synchro and Xyz
I tried getting back into it, and it had me so lost. I miss the beginning days of Yu-Gi-Oh
This is exactly how I feel with the current age of Yu-Gi-Oh! lol. Master Duel needs that classic mode to become a full-time mode for us OG players (I can never keep up with the new wave of rules, summons, negates, etc.)
I left yugioh during the initial synchro era and came back during the link era and was completely lost for a hot minute
this hits harder because when I tried getting back into yugioh I told my friend about the idea and we decided to build a deck with out telling each other what deck we were making. I bought a starter deck with a couple of cards for my extra deck , and my friend decided to buy a meta deck of the time. Let’s just say I never got to play the game so I just never played again 😂
To be fair even in the old days special summoning was a thing. Monster reborn, the recruiters, etc...
This is how i felt playing against my step son a couple of years ago.
*[laughs in Kaiser Colliseum]*
The only way you could not know what a special summon is, is to literally play once 25 years ago and never again.
Wait till he learns about pendulum summon
Special summons were a thing from the start, so the OG player shouldn’t be confused about that. The rest is accurate though.
The amount of free wins I've gotten with just having it is ridiculous.
bruh. I really miss old school Yu-gi-oh and the one turn per summon days. WE USED TO BE A PROPER CARD GAME?!!
Well I mean at least learned one thing once the combo starts just leave cuz it's going to be going for 3 days
Reminds me of the duel links summoning waiting 10 years before a turn is over
Duel Links has a very short clock. You get 3 minutes per turn
This is why people should teach their friends. Have a fusions, Xyz, Synchro, pendulum, and link teaching deck.
"This is called a special summon."
"What?"
"Have you never played monster reborn?"
"No I just normal summon dark magician"
"....You mean tribute summon?"
"Whats a tribute summon?"
Dude, even in goat format, there's "reasoning gate" the closest thing to modern Yugioh where you summon a bunch of monsters in 1 turn.
The spirit of yugioh has been utterly destroyed. It’s no longer a duel, it’s a race to see who can otk first
Missed opportunity on the ending:
*scoops cards and puts em back in the deck box*
"Iquit."🤷🏾♂️
this is exactly how i feel playing masterduel after not playing yugioh since grade 6
Back in the day we used to have one hand, now we have, graveyard, banished zone, extra deck and the hand xd
Yu-Gi-Oh has gotten nuts over the years but i still play it every once in a while
In his defense, the knowledgeable player should really start out with explaining the differences in the two games before continuing. And the starting point of that could be the difference in monster summons
Don’t know why he’s surprised by a special summon. Those existed from the beginning.
Me when I booted up master duel once
