Great great overview of the filter tab! Great series too! Thanks for this. One thing most people don’t know is the yaw lowpass filter is actually filtering yaw Pterm. This has essentially the same effect of filtering the yaw gyro except you won’t see it’s effect in the post filtered gyro (gyro_scaled) because that debug is a stage before P is filtered.
Have an apex 5” and 4”. Left pids alone and turned filters way down. They fly so much better! I’m not good at tuning but these frames have great resonance characteristics
Thank you so much for covering the filter values outside of the sliders anyway! I just pulled out a 6 year old build with an spracing f3 v1 and it doesn't support any version of betaflight that has access to the sliders, to my knowledge at least.
I still don't get PIDs and filters but thanks to this video I dont get these a little less, if that makes sense. Thanks for these type of videos Mr Bardwell
Yoooo, If we could see a visualizer like you used while watching black box logs, it would be a game changer. Visualization is key to understanding and you showing that made way more sense in how filters work
Thanks for this series, Jb! Been loving 4.3 on most of my rigs since rc3, and it's incredible. Your tuning guide got me the best tune I've achieved on my own. I started building last year with the Xilo kit.
My setup keeps turning filters all the way up everytime I save? Not sure why it won't allow me to change my filter settings 😕? (Bi directional dshot is enabled) kakute H7 2x hobbywing 60a escs
I just updated my drone to 4.3, it flew incredible the first flight, but the second flight it seemed way worse, I didn’t crash, change anything in BF, or anything if the sort. Any clue why this would happen anyone?
Insta-flip is likely to be caused by one of these things. I don't think it's filters. Here are the things i suggest you check: 1. Clockwise prop installed on counter-clockwise spinning motor or vice versa. Double check the motor direction is as expected and then double check that the correct prop is on each motor. 2. Flight controller not facing forward. Go to the Setup tab in the configurator. Tilt the quadcopter on all axes (pitch, roll, yaw) with your hands. The 3D model in the configurator should move the same as you move it with your hand. If it does not, use the Board Alignment parameters in the Configuration tab to fix it. Do not use the "GYRO/ACCEL" parameter. Use the "Roll Degrees", "Pitch Degrees", and "Yaw Degrees" parameters. 3. Motors not wired correctly. TAKE OFF YOUR PROPS. Plug in a battery. Go to the Motors tab. Use the "Reorder Motors" wizard to ensure that the motor order is correct. 4. Motor spinning wrong direction. Do the same as step 3 but use the "Motor Direction" wizard to ensure that all motors are spinning the same direction as shown in the diagram.
@@JoshuaBardwell Thanks. #2 was backwards! I had checked it, but it's hard to see under fluorescent light - it strobes. Had to touch it. I do have to tweak the filters, though. The props are big and slow and BetaFlight Explorer says that the motor frequency is around 85 Hz.
Great content! Question when I input full yaw to either left or right, it shoots up full power. Is this normal! I have a geprc mark5 running 4.3. Thanks
I think this issue with people not going after black box data is that they believe it’s too complicated or too time consuming when in reality it takes all the guess work out, makes everything easier and quicker…thanks to Chris Rosser he pushed me into looking at black box data, before I saw his videos on 4.3 tuning guide I always thought about it, but looked at it as too big of a mountain to climb but it really isn’t rocket science it’s just science.
hey Joshua ive been wondering why Betaflight doesnt have an AUTO TUNE feature.. i feel like it could definitely be possible with the correct code.. any thoughts on an AUTO TUNE feature you could set your quad on and fly a set amount of time while your pids and filters set themselves for perfect flight characteristics? this has to be possible.. right?
With 4.3 filter tuning has never been easier... I just opted for a preset and it works very well... Warm motors at default PID's so I think I can still push the tune.
@@JoshuaBardwell Thanks. But that wasn't the problem, I down loaded the latest version of Betaflight and for some reason the filter slider section wouldn't work at all. I uninstalled everything and reinstalled the new version again and it is now working fine. Thanks again!
Just choose a filter setting in the presets and leave it be mate. They good enough for most 5 inch builds. I always select 'Clean build with RPM' If you want to dial in the filters, you will need blackbox logs..
@@JB-cq2wo Not a problem mate. The defaults pids and filters are great on 4.3 BF. The only thing i tinker with is the master multiplier. On a clean build you can crank it up a few notches for more pid authority..
I have a peoblem with my elrs. My lq dops after 500 meters down like to 70-50 ( at 250 mw, 200 packet rate. On an r9m module, the rssi dbm is good, new reciever and antenna on reciever and module) does anyone know what can it be?
No, just make sure you have an ESC firmware with bidirectional DShot so that you can use RPM filtering. The tuning presets will set your quad up in no time. Just make absolutely sure you are using an RC link preset that about fits your RC rate
Why you'd want to do that... Isn't the whole selling feature of that quad the fact that it has the Mockingbird tune dialed-in already? Not hating, I love 4.3 and I've not had good experience with Emu, I'm just curious..

15:54 , I think the narrower the notch the higher the delay. Higher precision in the filter comes at the cost of latency.
turning down filters makes me think of overclocking a CPU. How far can you push the overclock? and how long can the quad take it?

In my case my (fairly heavy) quadcopter immediately flips upside down when I rev up the throttle. I definitely need to work on the filters.

If I boost the D-gains and decrease the D term filter multiplier, could that help reduce the risk of hot motors introduced by the higher D-gain?
