Thank you, Gayle and Ed. There's a popular belief that when cleaning or organizing, "you should only have to handle something once." In my experience, there are things you only have to handle once, because their destination is clear from the outset: obviously trash or recycleables, things you borrowed and have to return, things that are currently used but are in the wrong place, etc. But much of our stuff for decluttering requires some handling and consideration, and even a vacation in the "maybe" box, before we can affirm it as "stay" or "go".
My friend's x died and he went over to her home to clear it out with their daughter. His daughter only took a Barbie from her childhood. I have already passed on most of what my kid's might want, which is very little. Gayle I love the way you said to string the small steps together. This is really it. It is the small steps strung together that makes a big difference.
The circle of life. and the gift of time..... from Ed's elderly father making and delivering holiday gifts of cookies to his friends .... to my young grandchildren doing the same thing. During the holidays, I spend one whole day baking holiday cut out cookies, with my grandchildren. I help them bake the cookies and the children also package them in cookie tins. Then they put the tins under the xmas tree, for each family member. and they also deliver some to special neighbors. This is a special time with my grandchildren, when they are so willing to be generous , as young as they are, and give to others. Also this is a gift of free time, without the kids, for my son and daughter-in-law. Especially, when they are so busy during holidays. My gift to me, is the precious time I spend doing something kind and memorable, with my grandchildren. As tiny Tim says..."God bless us ..everyone".

My solution has been to number my boxes, take a photo of its contents and make a list of said contents, what room it is stored. And I built specific open shelving units floor to ceiling to fit specifically said boxes. Either boxes are fancy ones and can just stay on display, or they are plain plastic or cardboard boxes and pretty curtains will "hide" the ugliness while making very easy to access the boxes and their contents.
I'll do the alternative tittle: Years ago our combination home printer and copy machine died. We never purchased a replacement. Now we go to the library if we need a basic prinout or copy, and to an office store if we need a high-quality print. We quickly realized how little we actually needed to print. It gets easier every year as more things can be done completely electronically.

@@MsLeenite I agree with you. Since things take a bit of consideration before releasing.

Less containers, less stuff, more organized is my mantra.😮
Am sorry for your loss. Very sad. You are a person of heart.
