Chinese People React to American Celebrities Speaking Chinese?!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 окт 2019
- We got a bunch of native Chinese speakers on the streets of NYC to react to American and/or Western celebrities’ Mandarin Chinese, as spoken in Hollywood movies or in real life. We got clips of Keanu Reeves, Mark Zuckerberg, John Cena, Jim Parsons (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory), Amy Adams (in Arrival), Michael Jai White, and Bruce Willis (in Red) speaking their best Mandarin for the camera.
But when we told our Chinese panel to react to Hollywood movie Chinese, what they heard was not necessarily Mandarin…! If you're looking to learn Chinese, you might want to stay away!

I love how Black Dynamite does the best Chinese
It basically comes down to conviction in your delivery. All the rest were talking at normal or slower pace, but Black Dynamite was over the top and that encourages better mimicry.
M.A.
Could it be any other way, jive turkey!!?? 😤🤔🤗
Same
It's because Michael Jai White is a true martial artist and took the time to learn Cantonese in Hong Kong Bitches!
@@rm9308 Your explanation was completely incorrect. His tones are way more accurate than the rest.
I'm really surprised at how few actors take the time to at least get the basics of pronunciation down for a language they have to speak for a part. Like, you've got method actors who will live as their character for the duration of filming, but these guys couldn't spend a few hours learning the basic tones of Chinese? Just boggles the mind.
For some people like, the tones sound the same. No matter how much I practice, I can't hear a difference between the tones.
@@Shiroiji is that the same as being tone deaf?
You can't blame the actors all the time, maybe the team hired a bad teacher, or they had a tight schedule
ew so hateful. you need to remember these people all speak english which is not tonal so for the majority of their lives they dont have to recognize tones to distinguish words so be a little more kind.
You would think Asian speakers would take the time to learn the language when they move to another country?
That latino music at the end gave me an unexpected yet pleasant surprise
Me to
I think the way Keanu pronounces things, in general, do not help his Chinese.
It doesn't help that the clip they selected has him as the embodiment of an artificial intelligence of alien origin, so he HAS to sound like a Speak-n-Spell
Yeah, dude intonates when speaking English. No way he's going to be able to speak Chinese.
He apparently didn't spend enough time with his Chinese grandmother.
@@thaddeusk he has a chinese grandmother??? How can he communicate with her if he don't know chinese
Bogus, dude!
At 8:20, as an English speaker, just hearing him say "WWE ni ga" sounds so hilarious.
3:14 My mans getting hit on out here and is oblivious
The way she says that is so incredibly cute. I'm surprised it didn't phase him what so ever.
100% with the cute little smile
I’d date her
@@jedjade4002 - I think he's gay so having a pretty female flirt with him wouldn't really phase him
i hate the fact that he didn't respond accordingly.
He should've included Don Cheadle in Rush Hour he's pretty good there (although i think it was Cantonese rather than Mandarin.)
Your channel is just the best! Just found you and now binge watching.
I'm picking up little bits of Chinese watching these videos. Thank you Xiaoma.
I like how James Hong had to endure bad Chinese from Keanu and Sheldon.
James Hong is a Chinese-American who speaks Cantonese. In the shows, they're suppose to speak Mandarin. So James Hong's pronunciation isn't all that great either.
I love your energy Xiaoma!!
The same stuff happens when I hear American actors talking Italian, however the oldest movies where they talk italo-american are nearly incomprehensible! I had to add subtitles to watch the Godfather, because they didn't "translated" those lines back in Italian
💀💀HAHAHAH
wait what do you think of Timothee Chalamet's italian in CMBYN? out of curiosity
Dude, love your vibe and no-nonsense!
Ngl Sheldon's 'Aiyo' is so damn accurate xD
3:14 aiiiiiiiii Xiaoma my man
I was thinking the same.
Ya boy has got 1 foot in the door.
He had that locked
throughout the entire video, she’s been eyeing my guy
He should have asked her out
@tbd why does the guy have to do it? If the girl was interested in him , she should’ve asked him out lol
I’m a little sad that there’s no clips from Firefly, they incorporated Chinese phrases into the show, I was always curious what people thought about it
I love the show, but the Chinese was bad.
I had a friend from Hong Kong when I was in university years a go and I remember asking him what he thought of Rob Lowe’s Chinese in Wayne’s World and he thought it was quite good
可能只是客套话
Really enjoyed that videos.
This was a useful video as it makes me realise that I need to prioritise my HSK1 learning on actually speak it correctly and not to fall into bad habits moving forward in my learning🤞
I heard that the WWE guy changed his name to John China
8:18 WWE n***a
LaMarcGasolDridge hahahahaha
I had another one in Limitless (the last few minutes)
My girlfriend (chinese native speaker) laughed her ass of about it^^
Kinda destroyed the hole movie setup for her :/
Mauser19996 yeah I can totally relate man!! 1st time watching I was like 🤔 what the fk is Bradley talking? Until that Chinese waiter commented on what he said in NATIVE Chinese I was like Shit Bradley was speaking Chinese?!! FXXK me🤣🤣
Yes, the Chinese lines at end of that movie was spoken poorly, but even in translation it still didn't make sense.
Bradley ordered a number of items which I could actually make out. He ordered scallion pancakes and lobster but asked not to be given MSG. The word for MSG (wei4 jing1) is a homophone for 'scarf' (wei2 jin1) but in the context of the scene is apparently meant to be 'bib' (for eating lobsters).
Then the waiter either made a dad joke about it saying "the 'bib' will protect your clothes", OR, Bradley meant to say bib to begin with but it sounded like MSG to us the audience, though the waiter understood him.
Then Bradley replies something completely indecipherable which according to the script was, "but it won't protect my filthy hands!" And they both chuckle, for some reason.
Loved that episode . Hilarious
Where’s the John cent one? All I saw was a floating sauce and some broccoli

Love your channel fan from Canada
Nothing but respect for the people of China 🇨🇳 much love from Canada 🇨🇦
Xiaomanyc maestro!!
Fuck.. that Michael Jai White segment was hilarious!
I'm also waiting for other participance to comment on Xiaoma's Chinese, one of the two ladies had noticed.
Please do a part 2 of this
"she sounds like Siri" is such a good roast
Enjoy the videos a lot. Your enthusiasm and high pitched laugh is contagious. Your willingness to interact with various cultures is admirable. At the end of the video you played the song "Conmigo" by Nico Rengifo. Super cool on your part!
Omg, the music at the end of the video is a hint that you might learn Spanish? 👀 That would be aweaome haha. Greetings from Peru😉
I totally like my boy in the blue jacket reactions..His face be like...🤔. What the heck is this person saying???!!😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣
Excellent!!!
Wayne’s world would be a good one too!
Next vid Suggestion: Let chinese react to KZ singing mandarin song "The hurts you never knew". She's a filipina and not a native chinese speaker.
More then famous American celebrities speaking Chinese catching me by surprise .. was the Spanish song at the end of the video..that caught me off guard 🤣
I'd like to know what they think about the Mandarin in Firefly
That's who I was waiting for!!!
was funny, liked it.
Hahahaha this was awesome!
This was funny 😆
Whenever I see that “I ❤️ NY” shirt it brings me back to the private yacht life. Used to work personally for the owner of that slogan on a private yacht. Memories! ❤️
Did a quick Google search. Never thought about how much money a graphic designer could make before.
Gabe J it’s all about marketing bro. Marketing the right way. Nice person. Very wealthy. 160 ft yacht. I’ve worked on much bigger.
@@reelfishermen what type of work did you do on tbe yacht? Where you an escort or bartender or neither?
You should do a scene in Arrow, which Oliver Queen speak Mandarin(which I didn't get a single word) to a stuff. A Chinese guy in the restaurant said in Mandarin "That white dude's Mandarin is so fluent". I laugh so loud. haha
I only ever understood one word, when he said 爱人 besides that I couldn't understand anything either. Still, some of the worst I've heard is in Daredevil when Kingpin is speaking Chinese.
Yeah I remember that scene. When Oliver disappeared that Chinese guy said to his gangster friend in Chinese " judging from his accent he must be from mainland China"
I was like HELL NO!! I couldn’t understand Oliver until the 3rd replay😅😅
What is really hard for big country such as China: it’s that a lot of inhabitants might speaks «Chinese» differently from a city to another. There is also completely different dialects all around the country. Literally 2 cities that are neighbors/close by would speak a different tone/accent that makes the dialogues really hard. India, Russia, Brazil have the same issues. So most likely if foreign actors are teached Chinese they might learn it from different persons originated from various parts of China.
Russia?😂😂😂
@@ppor_jonesy Yes ! Dialect are different from Regions. They speak Moldovan Russian, Ukrainian Russian, Belarusian, etc…
Haha. He showed David Lo Pan. The guy is a Hollywood legend.
Late to the game but, Broken Trail. A Robert Duvall movie (great western) would be intresting. Hope to see it. Love your content.
So creative...
So fun
That was very interesting I also have always wondered if the lines they say in the movies are accurate you should look through the television series Firefly
It's a space cowboy series set in the far future where everybody speaks combination of Chinese English
I really like your videos and reaction of people that are involved. I watched like 5 of them, because it's basically all the same imo, but this one is quite a fresh idea :P Nice! I'd like to ask You for more "inventions" and maybe (that might be selfish of me) some jokes and pranks of "higher level" xD Like selling something in China with the mask on, people think U are Chineese, then You take it off and scream like mad "greetings from USA" in cantoneese xD Right now suprisingly i am out of ideas, but some "stupid crazy level things" somethimes would add a lot of heat to the channel xD I might be the only one that thinks this way, but here i am, asking for even more xD I am in awe of Your language skills, greetings from Poland Quarantine Land xD
... soooo something stupid and funny and i give a sub xD ha!
I'd imagine standing in the middle of busy Times Square listening over an earbud isn't the best setting for discerning language.
8:15 - Please tell me yall heard that too 😂
You should have done Firefly and Serenity - I've always been curious about what they were saying!
Hell yeah
Firefly would be interesting
they only curse in chinese
John Cena and Black Dynamite have got the best Chinese.
Hi Xiaoma! From philippines here. Can you do taste them some filipino street food there in new york. Thank you and I love your vlogs
He already did. There's like 5 of it.
I'm glad that I wasn't there when he was interviewing people, cause I don't speak or understand any forms of Chinese!
I actually wish you would have included Rob Lowe ordering Chinese food in Cantonese on Wayne’s World, which was probably the seed that eventually led me to learning Mandarin. I know it’s Cantonese, but i always wondered how well he did in that clip, since it was my original inspiration, and I still can’t check for myself since I ended up choosing Mandarin, not Cantonese,
Chinese, Taiwanese, Cantonese, and Singaporeans all have different Mandarin accents it's pretty fascinating itself. kinda like Spanish-speaking countries.
3:13 😂
does anyone have the link to the reverse video of this that he's talking about?
Amy Adams and Bruce Willis LMFAO
1:50 this Chinese guy is your friend. Saw him in your earlier videos
I like your video im from.philippines
Dose anyone can tell me what the final music background is?
JoinWe Joe Song is: nico rengifo- conmigo
You forgot don cheadle’s scene in rush hour 2! Haha
For the people who are searching for the outro song it's conmigo by nico renfigo
What was the song at the end ?
Lmao, I still remember how my classmates in school asked me what is (**insert any curse words here**) in Chinese or show me a Chinese character (e.g. the character for gender/sex). Of all the stuff they can learn for the language, they wanted to learn these instead 😑! Now I know why, the curse words are the easiest to master than any other words in Chinese 🤣.
Now try and get Michael Jai White when he's in NYC next!!
You said you did a video where Americans react to foreigners speaking English, but I can't find that video. Where is it?
Keanu Reeves does have some Chinese blood in him.
What about the guy from Rush Hour 2? The Avenger guy😅
What is the music in the end ?
Chewney ma! Now I can go get my ass kicked. Lol of course I'm spelling that phrase phonetically in english
I can teach you 'wiganese'........
Here are some phrases....
'Izziterzerizziteeze'? = 'is it hers or is it his'?
'Astbinmenbin'? = 'have the bin men been'?
'Eezertizzond' = 'he's hurt his hand'
'Sawreetferthee' = 'it's alright for you'
'Astbrowtitwithee'? = 'have you brought it with you'?
'Aberragerralorravum' = I'd better get a lot of them'
'Eenose nowtarbartit' = 'he knows nothing about it'
'Eezgooinwom' = 'he's going home'
'Ahwerfur clemm't' = 'i was fairly hungry'
'Artawreet'? = 'are you alright'?

What about that scene from Wayne's World where Rob Lowe (supposedly) speaks perfect Cantonese?

I think that it's nice that the actors are at least trying.
yes cena
the black dude spoke mandarin is pretty good。but all of the conversation was dirty words😂👍
I love your videos so much. Tell me how did you learn Chinese?

Rob Lowe speaks Cantonese in Wayne's World. I'd love to know what native speakers think of that performance.
haha 很有趣
What about that lady from...was it Entourage?
How did you study the Chinese language ?
Can you tell me what the sources that helped you to be a master in this language in particular ?
He has some interviews with like matt vs japan and stuff, pretty much you can follow the refold language learning method or (even older) ajatt method. These methods are very similar to what xiaoma did.
What is the name of the Outro song?
When you are speaking are you translating English to Chinese in your head when speaking and back again when listening?
@Atheist Biologist why did this make me laugh tho 😂 but seriously fascinating tho
That's like me watching american movies/tv shows and people start "speaking german". Most of the time I can hardly understand anything :D

Wo de zhong wen!!
Find some Cantonese speakers and ask them to rate Wayne's World the part where they are speaking it. I was watching it with a native speaker and she said she had to read the subtitles too because it was so bad.
Here in Sweden we have a mix of English and Swedish called Swinglish. Here Mark Zuckerberg spoke a mix of Chinese and English. Would that make it Chinglish? 😂🤷♀️
