Written during the height of the Vietnam War, this song could be about any war, and that makes it timeless and still relevant today, and into the future. The best video of this song comes from the Paris, France concert from 1970, watch Bill Ward kill his drum set. Oh yeah, and Ozzy, Tony and Geezer too.
Also, the boys in Sabbath were born post WW2 in Birmingham, which was in bad shape after the German bombings. They were born to parents who had survived that terrible war, so the pain and fear that haunted their parents was very real and left an impression I’m sure.
The Paris 1970 version would have been a better video selection.... experiencing that as your 1st Sabbath song would make any reasonable person a fan for life. & yes, Bill Ward should have been arrested for assault immediately upon ending the song

Anti-War song that ushered in the heavy metal era! At the time of release was considered somewhat controversal, but timeless anthem that plays well today and many many years to come! Thanks for plating this!!

Black Sabbath’s first album was my very first album in 1970, given to me by my older sister. Unbelievable how good this music is even half a century later. Clearly the evolution of music was moving very rapidly at that point in the late sixties and early seventies. Imagine music like Black Sabbath’s coming out ten years earlier. It probably would have caused a riot in the U.S. What’s incredible is that the band decided to make their niche in the exploding rock field by transforming horror movie themes into rock, and heavy metal was born. “Reflecting on the strange fact that people would pay good money to be scared by a movie like Black Sabbath [which was playing in a theater across the street from the band’s rehearsal space], the band decided to make music that would scare people.” Which no other rock band had ever focused on as the theme of their music. Ironically their lyrics are often very spiritual. And the music itself is a strange kind of genius.
I forget sometimes how powerful these songs are having always had them around. To be able to go back and hear them again for the first time would be great.
51 years old and still relevant AF. Which is sad AF. Also, how anyone could accuse them of being Satanists or whatever when these lyrics were out there blows my mind.

To give this context, this came out in the early 1970’s and just utterly stunned everyone. There was no sound like this at the time. It blew people mind and even scared the shit out of people enough to label devil worshiping music. This is the biggest peace protest song ever!
Yes, I saw that tour, Eddie freaked all of us as a modern, white Hendrix, we were standing on our seats for Eruption. Great opening set, they were hard as nails and dead serious about showing the planet who Van Halen was. Then Sabbath came out, Ozzy was in good form and they showed who was boss. Fantastic, all time concert I will remember forever...
Food for thought: Tony Iommi, the guitarist in this band, plays left handed, so his right hand is the one fingering the notes while his left picks them. Soon before their first album, he was working at a metal shop and accidentally severed the tips of the middle and ring fingers on his right hand. He plays with leather thimbles on those two fingers, but essentially is playing with half of his fretting hand... BAMF.
Thank You, so much for playing the original version, there are many great live versions on you tube but the original can never be topped. From the same album, Paranoid, Iron Man, Electric Funeral and Fairies Wear Boots are Ikonic, classic songs at the birth of classic Heavy Metal. I was chuckling to myself during the song about the musically savage way these guys attack things. The music is as violent as the subject matter but way easier on the ears somehow. It's magical. Nobody had anything resembling this kind of edge at that time. I always laugh at Sweet Leaf for having one of their most intense riffs and a brutal, mind scrambling musical break/jam section...in a song about weed!
I said this in another reaction to this song, this is a very BIG song with a big message, i appreciate that you did it!! This may very well be the best anti war song ever written!!
As I recall, the long instrumental intro is actually a separate song called ‘Lukes Wall’. The two songs are typically played together. ‘Lukes Wall/War Pigs’. These are the beginnings of metal music as it is known today. A lot of sound engineers had no idea how to record them in the early days
Umm ... no. Lukes Wall is the outro. I have an original vinyl that I bought in 1970 and the label on the record itself lists War Pigs first ... Lukes Wall second.
Sick drums, amazing bass, and incredible solo guitar. Ozzy’s vocals crisp and clear. A real powerful anti war song . This was a cry against the Viet Nam war.
No, although there was clearly some solidarity from UK students, the Vietnam War wasn't as big an issue to us in the UK. The band were from Birmingham, an industrial city in the heart of the UK which was heavily bombed by the Nazis in WW2, their parents lived through that time, and most of the major UK cites had areas that had been flattened by bombing, these sites often becoming 'playgrounds' of rubble for post war kids. Bill and the band were also worried about being called up to do National Service, this peace time Conscription required all healthy males aged 17 to 21 to do 18 months military training as a post war duty, and be part of a reserve army should it be needed again.
Oh yeah one of my favorites among many of their jams. 1970s. In B'ham Al. From their, "Paranoid Album" On of their most Iconic Jams with a strong and historical meaning to it. And that sound. Chicago from their 1st album (Chicago - Prologue August 29 1968) The protesters on that day were chanting "The Whole World's Watching" and that is the lead-in to the song.
Glad you like this song. It’s my favorite Sabbath song And I get to see and hear it live by going to see a Black Sabbath tribute band Bit of Finger which features my son who accurately plays the drums of Bill Ward along with the other members / bass and guitar/ to great accuracy including vocals So their music is still alive!
The songs off all their early albums is crammed full of transitions. Their lyrics are always surprising. Then you have the wonderful rhythm section of Bill Ward (drums) and Geezer Butler (bass), solid as a rock. When one swings it the other plays straight, and then they switch.

Oh yeah one of my favorites among many of their jams. 1970s. In B'ham Al. From their, "Paranoid Album" On of their most Iconic Jams with a strong and historical meaning to it. And that sound. I'm a 10th grader in high school in B'ham Al. Me and my homies love this!🔥🔥💯💯✌️.
That Whole Album Is Awesome!😎
Hand of Doom off the same album as War Pigs, its about the dangers of drug addiciton, has a sick beat/bass line almost hip hop sound in the beginning
Black Sabbath Volume 4 is a must listen to.
War pigs is a great song! It's really fun to play on the guitar, & drums too!
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell! With Dio singing. Masterpiece
I can tell BJ was jamming on this one. One of my all time favorite tunes!!
You'd be blown away by the video for this song. Love you guys ur fucking class
Total Banger!!!
Everyone in this group just killing it!!!
This was always a great live song!!!
Watch Black Sabbath in concert back in the early 70s....one of the best concerts!!!
my God,you two are so frikin open minded and willing to adjust to a new mindset from song to song, from genre to genre, allways givin it a fair listen. This anti war heavy symphony is not a beautiful listen, but still so poerful in its dark protest and so masterfully arranged and played, and you guys get that. One day you enjoy The Bee Gees or Earth, wind and fire, and next time something like this, and the respect and musical understanding is allways present with you.Such a joy to see you travel with your musical time-machine!
Sabbath is the grandaddys of metal. The number of great songs they produced over those first 8 albums before Ozzy left was staggering. One of the greatest hard rock bands ever. What metal band since them doesn't honor the great Black Sabbath?
I went to basic training at Ft Benning home of the Infantry and the warfighter and one of my Drill Sgts used this song as a running cadence.
Funny. Had a Drill at Leonardwood that would cadence that song. He was a big black E6 everyone would just be quiet when his platoon would go by.
Gotta watch the video of this song its impactful to understanding the song. Still one of the best Sabbath songs.
One of the best bands ever. From Birmingham here in England 🏴
War Pigs is a timeless CLASSIC. Fantastic guitar and drums,,,,deep lyrics. One of my favorites,,,,glad you like it too. 💥🔥💥🔥💥👍😎
Bill Ward is a very underated drummer.
Saw them live in 1971 awesome concert.
Classic! Our introduction to Ozzy!
Doesn't matter who you are and it doesn't matter what you say this song stands alone as one of if not the best rock/ metal songs ever written!! By the greatest rock/ metal band to ever form.
Chicago from their 1st album (Chicago - Prologue August 29 1968) The protesters on that day were chanting "The Whole World's Watching" and that is the lead-in to the song.
You all hit the nail on the head I believe with your reactions to this song. Sweet leaf would go along with the power of this song.
yes the song is Timeless , love it .Your reaction is killer . for a classic rock band ,, i like dont stop .
Favorite songs FARIES WEAR BOOTS, NIB, THE WIZARD. I’m 52 and have been a Sabbath Fan since I was 9. Fantastic, powerful and way ahead of their time!
One of the Greatest ANTI (VIETNAM) WAR Songs ever written!
Ozzy has said they didn't know about Vietnam.
Black Sabbath the fathers of Heavy Metal!!! This is where it all started!!
The lyrics are this song....the music is Black Sabbath's gift.
The songs off all their early albums is crammed full of transitions. Their lyrics are always surprising. Then you have the wonderful rhythm section of Bill Ward (drums) and Geezer Butler (bass), solid as a rock. When one swings it the other plays straight, and then they switch.
Sabbath and Rammstein in one night. Brilliant. Many thanks. Happy new year to you both.
50 years ago they told us the story .... and here we live it!
Probably should've paid more attention!
The conversation between the guitar and drums at the end is mind blowing.
True message in the lyrics...Sad that the world will never really hear it tho😢
For a song 50 years old, it's still got it.
