    Those valves don’t have the type of “lash” adjustment that you’re thinking about…and those pushrods are not all the same length so make sure you put them back where they came from

      Thank you. I guess that's about the '"valve tuning" he mentioned. I took the rocker arms all the way off. Hopefully I don't have to do anything extra. Wondnering about torque number for the bolt holding intake manifold down. Will try to find that info.

    8.16.14. Matt,on 1996 & up 3100s you do not have to adjust the valve lash. Also these engines are extremely prone to stripped rocker arm bolt hole threads in the aluminum head! The tool you show keeps from stripping the threads in the aluminum head. What happens if you don't have the tool, & you loosen the rocker arm bolt, and the cam is coming up to open the valve, it puts a ton of pressure on the bolt/thread junction. That will cause the bolt to pull the aluminum thread in the head! This is the only way to avoid stripping the aluminum threads! The head gaskets also are a common failure on these engines, due to the Dexcool coolant not being drained/flushed completely. I service the coolant every 30k/2yrs! Long life coolant is a marketing ploy for the auto manufactures. Good video! P.S. Timeserts®️ are the best way to repair stripped threads.

      Bout to do this same job. So will I need the tool to remove the rocker arms? Also is their a torque spec for putting them back on? Also their is a loud knocking noise coming from the top of the engine and I believe it is one of these rocker arms is that possible and if so can I replace just the one or should I replace all... Doing this job for a friend for free to help them save cash (pay it forward people). Thanks in advance for the advice

      ronnie cox 7.13.20. Yes you should have the tool. I believe that the Torque value is 14 or 18 ftlbs. If you have stripped rocker arm bolt hole threads in the aluminum heads, use TimeSerts ®️instead of Helicoils®️

    😂 that motor does not have adjustable valves, just pop the rocker arms off and take the pushrods out and put them back in the same order. Two size pushrods in that motor and the valves will bend if you mix them up.

      4.4.24. While the Lisle 48300 tool is not absolutely necessary, it makes the job a lot easier. Because in order to pull the push rods out, you will have to loosen the rocker arm bolts. But before you loosen those rocker arm bolts, it’s imperative that you turn the crankshaft and make sure that each and every cylinder that you’re working on is at its top dead center on the compression stroke. The reason being is if you do pull the rocker arm bolts with the valves being actuated by the cam, they are loading in tension the rocker arm bolts thread junction in the aluminum heads hole. Thus risking stripped aluminum threads⚠️ RUclips is replete with videos of people not doing either of these two actions and rocker arms are loosened, making a horrible noise.‼️ therefore, it’s much easier to use the Lisle 48300 tool✅

    ***** hey thanks for the response. I am sorry to hear that you still had the problem. The kit that I am going to buy doesn't include that o-ring for the oil-pump-drive-gear. It only includes thermostat seal, thermostat housing pipe o-ring, and coolant bypass o-ring. Oh well I'm just going to leave that one alone. I am also not going to bother taking the rear valve cover off and the alternator because I am going to buy Lisle 48500 push rod tool, just to speed up the process. After all, my car is still a POS. Anyway, thanks for your awesome video.

    This isn't a SBC, you don't have to worry about setting or adjusting the valves. You can just take them off and bolt them right back on. The only way you can mess up is if you put the pushrods in the wrong location.

      No kidding. I was really torquey. My 3800 is several years newer and won't brake the tires loose like that one would. That said both the 3100 and 3800 I've had issues trying to keep from leaking coolant. They ALWAYS seem to leak which is super annoying. As soon as I patch up one leak another surfaces ug.

    Hi great video BTW. Are you saying that there was nothing wrong with the plastic LIM gasket? It was just the RTV in the valley? Because I am experiencing the same problem with my Malibu. I touched that liquid right below the thermostat and it looked like it was oil. -Thanks in advance. Again awesome video

    • @matthewjeschke
      @matthewjeschke  10 лет назад

      Patrick Macalalad yeah I believe it's the RTV sealant. However, if you tear it apart you really should put a new metal gasket. FYI. The gasket was only 1/2 my problem. Upon putting mine back together it still leaked :/ I should have also put RTV sealant on the plug where they use to put distributors. I believe that is also a source of leaking. The little rubber o-ring they give you for that simply isn't enough. I should have RTV'd the surface where it meets the top of the block.

Looked into it recently to find a video to refer somebody to who has a newer vehicle with same architecture engine. By 2009 they might have changed to a better OEM part though, IDK.
