They mentioned Taylor Swift as an example of someone who is selling records. But they ignored what Byrne was saying. He said it's hard to break through as an underground artist. Which is still true.

Jason Lee I think he still may feel umcomfortable being interviewed. It takes him awhile sometimes to think of the right words so the interviewers keep pushing their own thoughts ahead. They’re afraid of “dead air” while David is thinking of the right phrase to use. He has mild Asperber’s Syndrome I read somewhere. So, even if he seems calm he may still have some awkward feelings maybe. Just a theory. ??

David Byrne's idea of Talking Heads was as much experimental performance art as anything else. If there must be a guarantee of decent living then they should be accountants. They probably should talk to someone successful and get their opinion on the quality of the work. Anyone can say "I am an artist" but few produce art and even fewer produce interesting worthwhile art.

She's like the Debbie Gibson of the late 80s. Not my cup of tea, no, and there's so much out there that would never have made it past the 'gatekeepers' that existed in the past, now people can self publish if they want to go that far and put it out on free venues - like David said in the interview, the issue is getting people to want to pay for it when its been put out for free; enough people will take their free stuff and won't look to keeping that artist able to put out even more free stuff because they don't understand how paying for something you like keeps it going, but only if enough people do, otherwise people are forced to do other things to live unless they're independently wealthy and that's often not the case with artistic talent, ease often does not create passion, nor does it create experiences that resonate with the general public.

David wants to talk about his musical. You can tell how passionate he gets compared to the rest of the interview and I think he had some interesting and profound ideas about how he wanted to present the narrative, the avenues of conservation you can go down and instead of elaborating on that they just skip right along go back to repeating themselves.
They respond with dead air and you can hear the whole thing deflate.

In the interviewers’ defense, it would be near impossible for ANYONE to pick David Byrne’s brain in 5 minutes, never mind with a director barking in your earpiece half the time. I’d like to see a 20 minute interview with just he and Charlie, with a little more homework having been done beforehand.

You are so articulate explaining how to get people to pay for your work. I have been maimed by people when I first started out taking credit for my ideas and they collecting the salary that they should be sharing. I am finding out now, that what I suspected was right because I have been getting the silent treatment from people who could vouch for me but apparently they do not want to share in the wealth that my work created for them. I have discovered that I have been taken advantage of presently and in the past and wonder what the answer is. When it comes to money, it seems people are so greedy, they just can''t do the right thing. I had this happen way back in the 70's when I first began and now it seems that I have more obstacles than ever preventing me from collecting the money I have rightfully earned. What's the secret? Well known to you, I'm sure, but never been taught to me.

I feel....and even the band felt ....that the "innovative music videos" bolstered BYRNE'S popularity and notoriety ...but it back-lined the band. The first write up I saw in a audio magazine for "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" was 5 times as long as any Talking Heads album review.

I know bands that put out their own CD's and they sell them. You almost have to if you want to travel. Merch and Music sales are the bread and butter of a musician's living. The problem is the music industry is secretive. And the musicians are at fault for just giving their music away. Believe me. I know. I've played music with many people who absolutely refused to deal with the business side of music. Part of making it as a musician are finding the right people to work with and finding the people who can tell you when, where, and how much. If you can't, find someone who can.
