  • What is really going on with RMC (better known as Rocky Mountain Construction) with respect to the lack of new RMC hybrid coasters?
    Between 2011 and 2019, there were 13 hybrid coasters completed by RMC worldwide. Since 2020, we have only seen two new hybrid coasters from RMC open across the world.

    RMC has done a lot of coasters since 2011. They’ve built 25 coasters now with 14 of them being converted from old wooden coasters. I think the reason why they’re not building as much as before is because maybe we’ll see an RMC T-Rex coming soon. Maybe we’ll see one at Universal Orlando Resort, replacing Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit!

  • @ajhummel9187
    @ajhummel9187 3 месяца назад +1

    Lots of reasons for this going on...
    -The pool of conversion-worthy candidates is dwindling. Worldwide, I can think of 15-20 wood coasters that would probably benefit from the process, but less than half those are at parks that could both afford to do it and would consider it.
    -Conversions aren't as cheap as they used to be. For example, Wicked Cyclone in 2015 and Joker in 2016 were both around $10 million. By comparison, I've heard the similarly sized Wildcat's Revenge in 2023 was $15+ million, which represents a significant price hike.
    -Compounding the above are the Raptor models, which are more economical than a conversion. Even the larger Raptors are cheaper than the smaller conversions and don't require sacrificing an existing coaster to install, which is probably why RMC seems to be selling more of them than IBox rides in recent years.
    -Parks simply aren't buying as many large thill coasters these days, at least domestically. While eight large coasters did open last year, only three were thrill coasters (two of which were RMC projects), with the other five being geared toward a family audience.
    -208 ReTraK has emerged as an option for parks that just want to reduce maintenance on an existing wooden coaster without significantly altering the layout and turning it into a brand new ride experience (along with similar products from other companies).
    -In the US, enough IBoxes have been built that there's diminishing returns to parks buying one over a different type of ride, especially if they or a competitor already have a ride of similar style.
    Is this concerning? Not in the least. RMC is still getting steady business, and with three confirmed Raptors for 2025 there will definitely be more rides from the company coming soon.

    I think it's a side effect of parks focusing on family additions and some residual covid pain. It's gonna be all about family coasters the next couple of years because while parks still want to make investments, the money perhaps isn't there right now and many of these parks haven't had a family coaster for awhile anyway.

  • @brianfoss571
    @brianfoss571 3 месяца назад

    A few points:
    1) RMC's initial popularity was a response to the 2008-2010 recession. It allowed Six Flags to add unique thrill coasters for a fraction of the cost of a B&M hyper. And since X2 bankrupted Arrow Dynamics, Six Flags probably felt some sense of obligation to get RMC off the ground.
    2) 13 years later, RMCs are kind of everywhere in the US. The benefit of adding another one just isn't as big as it was in 2015. Sure, there are a couple of projects in Europe that would be enormously beneficial for those markets. But most wood coasters are in the US, so that's been driving their conversion business. This is actually problematic for Six Flags America. Roar is a very similar layout to Wildcat, so RMC'ing it wouldn't provide a great competitive advantage for the investment. They'd be more likely to get a small Raptor clone instead.
    3) Demographic change. Many of the Millennials who enjoyed RMCs in the early 2010s now have young kids. They're not looking for the most thrilling, ejector-air, adrenaline-inducing experience possible. They're looking for well-themed family areas with lots of great photo-ops. That's why RMC has tried so hard to break into the family coaster market. First with custom layouts, then with the Fire In The Hole conversion, and with the Wild Moose as a cheap, clone-able option.
    4) Non-hybrid alternatives. Gravity Group EPT and GCI Titan Track provide a smoother experience while keeping older woodies wooden. Titan Track is probably going to transform Roar, Boss, and Monstre eventually. Parks at the bottom of the pecking order, where a RMC conversion isn't best for business, will get this treatment instead.
    Best we can probably hope for in the near term is a herd of Wild Moose to pop up across the country. (Until it's Hurler's turn for conversion)

  • @aapee565
    @aapee565 3 месяца назад +2

    A German youtube channel has an interview with the owner/ceo of movie park germany. and they are most likely going to use titan track on it. They would want to keep the ride family friendly, so an RMC conversion is unlikely.
    Also, if you ask me, RMC isn't getting any new orders due to maintenance cost and operational issues. They got into the market with a cheap price tag and the promise of fixing rides. If the rides don't run well, they aren't really fixed. If the maintenace costs are high, it isn't cheap. Therefore, they are losing their market and customers are looking elsewhere.

  • @AttractionSpot
    @AttractionSpot 3 месяца назад

    Well there's one reason for that ever since the pandemic things haven't been quite the same. Since the pandemic there has been more incidents at parks , I just think overall places are short-staffed and customer service isn't as good as it used to be, they did have part shortages for a lot of companies and things like that.
    Also inflation has gone up so much that it's costly. There's a lot of parts that have been building family style b&ms and not building large-scale coasters. Besides the Raptor track there really is no small scaled RMC's.
    I do have that new family coaster that they've created which looks pretty cool. And that's probably why they debuted that to show that hey we can build this small scale coaster.
    But honestly some of these old wooden coasters are classic and I'd rather see them be refurbished to keep their classic feel.
    I honestly loved Colossus but I don't like Twisted Colossus.
    I'd rather see brand new ones from the ground up be transformed. The only one that made sense that was better than the original is Gwazi that is my number one coaster now. But that wasn't necessarily like an old coaster beforehand. And also with the humidity it's really hard to upkeep for wooden coasters in Florida.
    Cuz it'd be a real shame that sometime in this world that we never have a wooden coaster anymore and no one ever gets to experience it because they're all gone and transformed over.
    But I like your thoughts!

    I agree with what others have commented, the market for a hyper hybrid is tiny. It's too expensive and the ROI depends wildly on the market of a park. We're still clawing our way out of the massive financial pandemic disruption. Many parks are better off making/remaking a new area with that same money. Smaller hybrid conversions likely have a brighter future. I do wonder if we'll see more non-inverting RMC conversions to cater to the family thrill market. Every rollercoaster manufacturer (look at B&M) is offering smaller options, they have to diversify their portfolio or else the only work they'll end up doing is maintenance. I think Fire in the Hole at Silver Dollar City has a lot riding on it for RMC. If it's successful (reliable) I think they'll drum up more work.

  • @devdevthrills
    @devdevthrills 3 месяца назад +3

    To me it’s just supply and demand. The market for wooden coasters needing major renovations is wayyyyy tiny. They snagged up almost the entire market there right away. Paris not doing RMC are likely happy with how their woodies run/bring in guests. To us it seems obvious there’s a bad coaster somewhere, but it’s quite a stretch for any park to really consider unless the other option is tearing it down in most cases.
    I’d expect to see 1-2 a decade going forward for RMC’ing existing coasters and RMC will continue to do ground-up rides. Also doesn’t help that Titan track exists or just partial steel replacements like Lightning Rod.
    End of the day, majority of parks aren’t investing in new coasters that often, several years inbetween. Market is small, RMC needs to (and I believe they are doing a good job) focus on ground-up and more innovation to drive business.

  • @RockyTopInflatables

    My thoughts come down to two factors. First one is company relationships. Cedar Fair to me is a wait and see, because it’s become somewhat apparent that they didn’t like how Steel Vengeance and Twisted Timbers did the first year at their respective parks. Now I’m not saying the ridership, I’m talking more on the maintenance side. With that in mind I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see any RMC projects take place, unless six flags execs that have positions on the new merged company can convince Cedar Fair otherwise.
    I definitely see opportunities for Seaworld to continue their relationship as Iron Gwazi is really popular, and probably gets the most ridership at Busch Gardens Tampa. I could easily see a ground up hyper hybrid down the road at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, a Raptor at Seaworld Orlando/San Diego, a mid size hybrid for San Antonio (think Arie Force one), and maybe a set of Wild moose coasters for the Sesame place parks if not maybe a RMC family hybrid for the new one that recently opened. Six flags is pretty much dependent on the merger details with Cedar Fair, and how each side evaluates who the new company will work with.
    Universal has possibilities, but I think their options would lie more within a family route as I think they could maybe do something similar to the new fire in the hole at Silver Dollar City. Maybe some Universal properties could get raptors, but I doubt will see any hybrids at Universal properties.
    In terms of Merlin, I see some options if they wanna get creative particularly at Alton towers with Project Horizon if it’s an indoor coaster. Be cool to see a more thrill level indoor coaster, essentially taking the Fire in the Hole concept and turning it up a notch since Alton’s last thrill coaster was the Smiler. I also could see Thorpe Park, Heide Park, and Gardaland having potential for thrill level hybrids. However, I think if Chessington or Legoland parks get ones they’ll be more on the family side which would likely point to a wildmoose, Family Hybrid, or indoor family coaster.
    My other factor is candidates. I know there isn’t a lack of candidates for conversions. However, briefly revisiting the relationships I discussed there are only so many chains that have candidates, and unfortunately cedar fair provides the meat of the list aside from maybe six flags. Six flags I think potentially will eventually RMC Roar, Boss, and I could even see something like American Eagle or at some point predator (yes I said Predator) getting the treatment down the road. I know some will argue Predator will never get rid of its Titan Track, but to me if they want a quick solution to that park’s coaster drought a hybrid conversion would be a cheap option, since I know six flags don’t put a ton into the park because they only operate it, they don’t own it. Amongst other candidates over seas, I at best see maybe 15-20 more conversions over the next 10 or so years. I think in the long run ground up hybrids and family models will be their best shot at selling products to parks. Raptors I see eventually dying down a bit, since some of the bigger models aren’t as good as the compact ones. Sorry for the long comment, I just had a lot of thoughts.

    I don't think this is any sort of anomaly, for one, RMC is getting the nod to work on many roller coasters that are not Hybrids, such as the new Fire in the Hole, and making a few more raptors. And also, there is just a more limited range of coasters to to get the Iron Horse treatment. Edit: Parks are also in some debt and are focusing on smaller additions.

    I can sum up this subject with 2 letters Brandon, GG. Gravity Group!! Dude, there's been more maintenance on the Coasters that was Destroyed by Ruin My Coaster,( RMC) There's been more downtime on Steel Vengeance for example, when it was still Mean Streak. Of course Mean Streak had downtime for maintenance on some occasions. But not with the actual structure, and more stress. This is the main reason why Cedar Fair has cut ties with Ruin My Coaster. Gravity Group could have restored Mean Streak if Cedar Fair had waited, and it would have been an Outstanding Rollercoaster with the vertically stacked Pre-Cut Wood. Gravity Group would have most likely made the 1st drop steeper on Mean Streak, creating some good Airtime, and making the turns Steeper after the 1st drop for glass smooth transitions on The Trains, and they probably would have done some Major Changes to the 2nd half of The Coaster making it more like Steel Vengeance, of course not having inversions, giving Mean Streak a more exciting finish. Gravity Group has done some Very Awesome Work on Wooden Rollercoasters. Like on The Racer at Kings Island, and on sections of The Beast. Fire in The Hole is a Ground Up Built RMC Coaster, and that's the only time I don't refer the company as Ruin My Coaster. They can build Rollercoasters from the Ground Up all they want to. It's time to stop destroying The Traditional Wooden Rollercoasters. PERIOD!! And the Wooden Rollercoasters that you mentioned that should get Destroyed by Ruin My Coaster?? NEWS FLASH!! GRAVITY GROUP To the Rescue!! BTW I used to Absolutely Love The Once Mighty Colossus at Six Flags Magic Mountain after it was Reprofiled in 1979 by Bill Cobb Associates, and The Single Buzzer Lap Bar PTC Trains were added, AKA Screemy Meemy Version in National Lampoon's Vacation. It was Pure Airtime Nirvana!!! Magic Mountain should have Preserved that version of The Coaster instead of saying that it was out of date after just 36yrs of operation?? That was Absolutely BULLSHIT!! Tell Kennywood that their Wooden Rollercoasters are out of date. They'll Laugh in Your Face!! They know how to Maintain Wooden Rollercoasters, and keep them running like Fine Tuned Swiss Watches!! BTW. That's why Hurler at Carowinds is Remaining a Traditional Wooden Rollercoaster and Glad of it. Cedar Fair probably wished they had kept Hurler at Kings Dominion as a Wooden Rollercoaster, instead of having it Destroyed by Ruin My Coaster!! Oh Yes, Run My Coaster is more focused on their Marty Moose Rollercoaster, that's pretty much a knockoff of The Zamoerla Wildmouse Rollercoaster. In Holiday World's Rollercoaster Bible, The verse is, Thou Shalt Not Steel,(RMC)!!

    Wild Waves Theme and Water park in Washington State is my home park (unfortunately). Wild Waves has gone downhill over the past couple years. We have one wooden coaster there: Timberhawk Ride of Prey. It used to be a great coaster. Now…not so much. If RMC could turn it into a hybrid, more people might actually go to the park. That’s assuming the park even has enough money to do that and fix up the rest of the dilapidated park. It makes me so sad to see Wild Waves how it is now 🥺

    I think when a park makes a huge investment, they need to pull visitors from a larger area to make it worthwhile. And with RMC hybrids scattered throughout so many parks now, that ability to draw people from farther distances becomes diminished, decreasing the potential for parks to get a solid return on their investment in one.

    Here are a few reason why RMC is not as hot post covid. 1. Parks are still holding their purse strings tightly since covid. 2> With the merger between Six Flags and Cedar fair, they are probably waiting for the merger to go through before they really invest in coasters. 3. Most parks post coaster wars are realizing families, rather than enthusiasts are driving their business, and are investing in coasters that are appropriate to this demographic.4. Until they really improve their reliability, parks will also be skittish. Just the issues between Lightening Rod, Steel Vengeance, and Iron Gwazi, is enough to make anyone be put off. 5.Also, Area Force One, although great, the airtime has been deemed too much and the people complaining about thigh pain and bruises are probably going to turn it into an I305 situation...

We all know everything has its lifespan. But for those revolutionary life-changing thrill machines to abruptly hit the brake run and go from 1000 to 0 is in fact "concerning." By now every (major) park should have one yet many of them don't. Your Carowinds and my Great Adventure are just two prime examples. It's early 2024 right now. Anything that was only concept or proposal in early 2020 got postponed or cancelled outright I would imagine, 2021 probably didn't see a lot of new projects get off the ground either (at least until the back half of the year). 2022-23 saw the disastrous management shift at Six Flags that resulted in the attendance numbers completely tank at their parks while everybody else was going gang busters. The merger with Cedar Flags happened during the back half of 2023 so it won't surprise me if major projects don't get moving until the back half of this year. The only big coasters SF has opened since 2020 were already contracted for before Covid and the new CEO came onboard. Everything else announce or built has been family sized at best.

    I kind of wonder what the marketability of a ground up I-box hybrid is for a park that wants to keep its current woodies intact. If a park has an old classic woodie that they wouldn't dream of RMCing, would a ground up I-box coaster like Zadra (though not necessarily on that scale) be viewed as a shiny new attraction or would the general public see it as yet another woodie? I mean any new model B&M like a dive coaster or wing coaster immediately looks new and eye catching. But an I-box coaster (especially with a wooden structure) might not immediately turn heads.
    Obviously, the on ride experience would be excellent since RMC only makes great rides. But coaster manufacturers aren't really household names so you need something visual about the coaster to turn heads.
    I guess what I'm saying is that it may be that RMC coasters don't look as cool as they are so maybe they don't draw in the crowds. Or at least they don't draw in the kind of crowds that result in a boost in ticket sales. Sure, an RMC might have a long line but that might be local guests who have a season pass and already know the ride is good, as well as enthusiasts who know that RMCs rule. But when a family sees a billboard for a new dive coaster, 4D coaster, flying coaster, indoor coaster or record breaking giant coaster they might decide to visit the park when they otherwise wouldn't have. But if they see what to the eye appears to be a wooden coaster they might like that but it doesn't strike them as "I HAVE to ride that thing."

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 3 месяца назад

      You're basically talking about something like ArieForce One and given how much cheaper it is than a traditional steel coaster I'd say it's a very viable concept. I mean you could build it with wooden supports if you want by why would you?

    • @zacg_
      @zacg_ 3 месяца назад

      @@ashleighelizabeth5916 actually, I'm not really talking about ArieForce One but I can see why that comes to mind. This video is about how there have been fewer conversions of wooden coasters to steel coasters with the RMC I-box track. The usual talking point to explain that is that the industry is running out of coasters to convert which at least sort of make sense since more modern woodies are less likely to be converted and way older ones might be considered classics so they're deemed untouchable. But obviously there are still plenty in that sweet spot that could be converted.
      But since there are fewer at least obvious woodies to convert, the alternative would be to build more ground up hybrids. So my question was really pondering why we haven't seen that concept take off. ArieForce One is distinctly not a hybrid, much like Storm Chaser (though that was at least a rough I-Box conversion of one side of Twisted Twins.) I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing more ground up pure steel I-box coasters like ArieForce One since they generally do appear different even to the untrained eye (though the lattice structure might still confuse people.) And in the case of ArieForce One, it wasn't built in a park that already had a big wooden coaster so it might not even tell us much. But I think we aren't seeing a boom of ground up wood/steel hybrid coasters by RMC because they simply don't look unique. They look like wooden coasters. And if a park has a wooden coaster and doesn't want it converted for whatever reason, the ground up hybrid by RMC elsewhere in the park just isn't enough to catch the eye of the general public enough to boost ticket sales.
      Or at least that's my theory regarding why ground up hybrids haven't caught on. But I could be wrong and maybe that'll happen in a few years.

    • @ashleighelizabeth5916
      @ashleighelizabeth5916 3 месяца назад

      @@zacg_ personally I think the concept is a dead one because wood requires more maintenance than steel. Why bother building the support structure out of wood when it's been shown that a similar ride experience can come from an all steel structure at basically the same build cost?
      I don't think the GP could tell you the difference between the structure of Arieforce One and a Hybrid and I definitely don't think they care. As an example my mom LOVES roller coasters and always has and is still riding them even at 70 years old. But explaining to her why Iron Gwazi isn't like Invadr at BGW in any way from a ride quality standpoint was like trying to explain nuclear physics to a layman. She's not dumb or anything it's just not something that she spend a lot of time thinking about.
