The JAPANESE version of RBR for the PS2 had an exclusive ARCADE physics mode! And It's glorious! It's like playing the PC version with a steering wheel.
Tried playing it back in 2004 and reinstalled it several times since then but it always was and still is impossible to drive (with a controller, never tried wheel). Constant sliding off the track unless you want to coast at a boring and unexciting 70km/h or less to actually finish a stage. It's one of the hardest, most difficult rally games ever made. Not to mention that nearly everything is locked until you play the Rally School and the whole Championship. You can never restart any stage either which means you can totally fail a rally by crashing out on the last stage. Nor is there even a proper internal dashboard view either. Better to play any of the Colin McRae Rally games made by 2004 and earlier instead, they have much more interesting and exciting stages without any of these annoyances.
RBR is still the only simulation being able to make you improve your driving of real cars... The road/tarmac behavior is AMAZINGLY REALISTIC... you feel in the steering wheel the whole car ... any slipping wheel, bumps, over/under steering signs... I don’t know how they managed to do it, but no one else succeeded since then. There are tons of mods for it... it is still VERY alive on PC for hardcore drivers (not for gamers at all).
@@faydulaksono I have never tried it with a controller... I would not recommend RBR with anything else than a force feedback wheel, as there are more fun games or better looking.
me and my friends are still plaiyng this. We're screeeaaming from excitement while going through turn. It's HAnds Down THE most exciting racing games I've ever played.
God knows why I didn't play this. Maybe playing Colin McRae to much. I also remember picking up a Rally game from Microsoft for my new PC way back. Cant remember its name.
Great rally game but solid. Never played it with wheel back in the day, but have recently discovered that thanks to mods it’s still popular today with sim racers. I still have my original PS2 copy, need to have another go and hopefully avoid destroying my car in the first rally. Great review!.
God I have some major problem with that game xd First of all xbox port... man... Framerate is poor, cameras all suck (mostly because of poor fov, but also difference in framerate), and game by itself is super hard. Maybe on pc, with decent wheel and some mods to improve fov... but on xbox it's nearly unplayable for me. I know that the biggest part of the issue are my poor skills (even though i tons of realistic racing games), but the technical issues don't help. Xbox port is better than ps2 port, but I think it's a pc game in the first place, it's difficult enough without technical issues :p
I have played it on PC with a wheel and it was easier. I agree that the game is almost unplayable but I think that is because of the frame rate. Mods would make the game a lot better because the car list id tiny. I would have bought the PS2 port but at the time I was trying to get as many games for Xbox as possible because I have an Xbox HDMI cable to make the footage a higher quality, but it doesn't work.
@@MontegoReviews PS2 port wasn't great, from what i remember (but back then my issue was that ps2 controller doesnt have triggers, now I use analog stick for acceleration/breaking even on controllers with triggers). I have original xbox, ps2, ps4, and psp, and i'm not planning to get rid of xbox any time soon because it's such an amazing console! (ps2 still my fav though). So i have absolutely nothing against it, especialy when modded. PSP was probably the best example of wasted potential (many games, almost all shovelware) - horrible nfs games, almost non-existing fps games, overall lack of quality titles. Developers either tried to make very portable and shallow games, or just shovelware, and only some took actual time to work on something worth playing. You should try Gran Turismo PSP because it is such a strange game, mixing ambitions with poor decisions (like advanced physics engine with no way to control level of applied gas/breaks, or lack of classic gt mode).
Hmmm.. Honestly for me RBR is very Fun game, and I loved it when I kicked the backends to myself Drifting in this game even with a Keyboard 😅 It's my personal opinion, i know it's sound arrogant, but yeah I'm being Honest this game can be fun
The controls to this game seem to suffer from what I term the Drama Queen Syndrome that the Gran Turismo and Project Gotham Racing games seem to suffer from, which is that it claims to be realistic in the terms of its handling but, in reality, it is just a super slippery mess that is nowhere near the reality of actual driving and, yes, differences like vehicle size, weight, clearance, brakes, materials, road conditions, and tires CAN and DO make a difference, but I see absolutely none of that happening here in this game.
Have you ever driven super fast on gravel irl? The car floats and it can be a slipppery mess fast lol unless you’re driving formula one or something with tons of downforce/ground effects you’re gonna get slippery the moment you slip out a little. Few cars really keep you glued to the road. Especially when on gravel.

Would it just make the physics better? This game really was so ahead of its time
I think it makes the physics suitable for playing on a normal joystick. Still pretty "simulation" IMO.@@JoEZiii
Complaining about a game being too hard is annoying.
Mastering something, anything is fun.
I enjoy difficult games. I enjoy a challenge.

Another great review bro, keep em coming!
Thanks. Have you got any sixth gen requests for reviews?

how about with controller?is it enjoyable?

RBR is made to play only with steering wheel with force Feedback. You literaly feel every small change in car set up.
@DaNes200581 thanks👍🏻
@@faydulaksono I can enjoy it. I can beat some of the stage records too. It's difficult in the narrow and winding road, but great in gravel.

Can we see in the future a review of Rollcage, Rollcage Stage II and Grip? :3
Thanks. I forgot about rollcage. I used to play that a lot. I'll add it to the list of games to review along with Rollcage Stage 2 and Grip.

Cool review Montego!
Thanks. Have you got any review suggestions?

Cool

Does naming rally games after famous drivers cause them to die? :(
Well richard was diagnosed with cancer prior to this game’s development
@@ronantory , damn, this is a worse track record than the Madden Curse!
I’d bet if they released another(assuming they are allowed to use his name) I’d bet it would still sell as good as most rally games.

I’d imagine you found rallysimfans RBR by now yea? Also known as Hungarian mod. Easy free install tons of stages and cars
