I’d like to see Star Fleet Academy set in the 23rd/24th century. That’s always been my favorite ST era. The starships, equipment and tech look great.
There's always the Starfleet Academy PC game, set in the 23rd.
Who shall play Boothby?
Between Kirk and Picard Era and explore the kitomer accords and aliens from season 1 and 2 of TNG and set on a class and problem solving and ethical questions and debates.
Would be kinda hard with Ray Walston gone for some years.
@@sethmaki1333 Ahh CGI deep fake ai!
Honestly I'd much rather see a Starfleet Academy show set in the Lost Era. The heyday of the Excelsior, Constellation, and Ambassador classes. It allows a familiar backdrop while still having enough room to flesh out stories.
Would be kinda pointless though. In the 32nd century not only do the students need to learn how to be explorers, so do the teachers.
Great idea! Which is why it won't happen.
Thank you 🙏
I'd be down for a 23rd century set of cadets or a 25th century set of cadets. Perhaps the 25th century comes with a bit of bias because of how great season 3 of Picard has been.
"Lost Years" sometime between STVI and TNG would have been my preference.
Agreed!
Like NCIS or Law and Order. One show per century!
We already got the 23rd Century academy. It was an Interplay video game with live action actors including William Shatner, George Takei, and Walter Koenig set between the events of Star Trek V and Star Trek VI.
@@Jayenkai Gee, I love "Law & Order" and "NCIS."
I love the idea of Starfleet Academy, but I'd vastly prefer it set in the 25th century. The 32nd century never connected with me and honestly the time period doesn't feel like it has the weight to carry this concept
Agree. I wanted to love Disco but it constantly disappointed. I would rather they shelved this timeline.
I’d like to see three different generations of cadets, depicted concurrently.
Agreed, Picard's timeline would make the most sense and it could feature O'Brien as an instructor and possibly Riker as the head master. Doubt Patrick Stewart would agree to be in it except for the occasional appearance (assuming of course Picard survives).
I totally agree
your! Idea isn't new. Pretty sure this was floated by fans as far back as the cancelation of Enterprise.
Would have preferred one set in the Picard era .. was hope’n for more Elron - maybe cameos from DS9 / VOY / TNG casts as professors / instructors
Matalas has been talking about doing sequels of those series! So hopefully, if nothing else, there will be more 25 century Star Trek in the future.
Season 3 of Picard has been so satisfying, I'm honestly not excited to be going back to the 32nd century.
I'm interested in this but would love to see a star trek legacy series, with TNG, DS9 and Voyager cast.
Same
@@johncameron4194 they have to do it!
That's Picard.
Yep
Did y'all sign the petition?
I saw a tweet from someone pitching what I thought would be a fantastic bit of casting would be to have Robert Picardo as The Doctor for an instructor at the Starfleet Academy.
This will live or die on the quality of the stories and characters. Personally this is one of the concepts (Section 31 being the other) that I was not too excited about but hopefully they can take some lessons from SNW and S3 Picard.
Same! Where an Academy show feels derivative with subject matter already being tackled by Prodigy, a 31 series just feels like a fundamentally bad idea for the franchise. New Trek loves to conflate Section 31 with Starfleet Intelligence but they are 2 very different animals. 31 is a cancer on the legacy of the Federation and trying to position a series around it will either give us terrible morally repugnant people as the lead heros or compromised morally grey heroes trying to take 31 down. Either way it’s the last thing the franchise needs right now imho.
hopefully they will follow those two shows and not DISCO
I'm a little worried about this one. I can't think of many engaging storylines based on younger people going to school. They are cadets, they can't be out saving the universe every week. So hopefully these folks have a vision on what these characters will do.
Not just first year cadets, but also those who are nearing graduation and have had some space time and action.
I bet they'll find a way for them to be saving the universe on a regular basis, given this is an offshoot of Discovery. I'll check it out, but my expectations are very low.
Clearly you've never seen the brilliance of Beverly Hill 90210, The O.C., My so called Life, One Tree Hill, Grange Hill, Freaks & Geeks The Inbetweeners and Dawsons Creek. Just imagine an episode of Creek where a student disappears after using one of their transporter credits and beaming back home, but they never materialised.
@@boydmerriman I mean going by that invitation they are selecting students for the FIRST CLASS in a century. So there really shouldn't be a 'senior class' near graduation to be honest.
We can just cycle around each cast member moping about “being seen” each episode
I was hoping Tilly's episode with the cadets was a soft pilot and looks like that was the case. Although I feel like Prodigy is a great example of a "cadets at the Academy" type show I'm really looking forward to seeing more of the 32nd century trek.
They have done one off episodes with junior officers in many Trek shows. Lower Decks is named after the episode of TNG highlighting a couple of days in the lives of some junior officers. The concept has no staying power.
The Tilly episode was pretty decent. But a whole series of that? Ech.
Looking forward to this. I do think it's a missed opportunity to explore "the lost era". That said, this might be what is needed to breathe life into the 32nd century timeline
I would be down with the idea if it where set in the same time period as Picard. Then we could get cameos of Legacy characters and maybe even an episode of two with cadets on the new enterprise with an exciting adventure with the TNG crew or something like that.
With an overall view of a school setting, you will eventually have characters graduating leaving the academy (and the show) while new characters are coming in as Freshman. Or, are they going to focus on just one class as they enter and then ultimately graduate from the academy, giving it a limited number of seasons? Maybe a little of both? My guess is the latter, so we can focus on character-trajectory, with a few incoming newbies to spice up the plot. I like the premise.
I just hope they don't pull a Harry Kim / Lower Decks and have the cadets just seemingly never graduate
While I never wanted an Academy series, as always, I will give it an optimistic try. I was hoping they would have gone done the route of doing a version set after Prodigy season 2. Those characters could finally go to the Academy and it would allow them to bring in any Trek alums who might not feel comfortable in live action to pop in for voice work as an instructor or special guest. etc.
If you're a bit worried, I would suggest watching these episodes:
TNG S5 E19 The First Duty
DS9 S6 E22 Valiant
The two previous "cadet experiments" of Star Trek are likely what Starfleet Academy will feel like, as more likely than not it will be a cadet crewed ship like the USS Valiant following cadets for most on field training, seeing as there is no more Starfleet Academy on Earth.
@@langm1701 That's actually a pretty good idea. I do really like the Valiant episode.
I wouldn't say I'm worried, but I am a bit unsure how it will feel being set in the far future Discovery timeline. Unless they do holographic stuff, it won't really allow for any classic Trek cast to be involved (not that this is required of course). Still, it certainly provides a unique twist to an Academy show set during the height of Starfleet.
Maybe Nickelodeon will do another kid show.
@@RaspberryLemonade101 I hope they can keep the quality of Prodigy. It's my sleeper favorite of the new series (Picard season 3 full opinion pending)
Prodigy being as wonderful as it is is why this show feels redundant. Minus being animated I think it already brilliantly tackles the subject matter that an Academy series would.
Maybe it'd be a retread, but since my favorite era was the TNG / DS9 / VOY era, would have loved to have seen it set at that time, with a lot of the events of those shows becoming background news (not usually MAJOR maybe except in certain cases) but focusing on the life in and around campus, the students, their families, etc.
I was excited until I read 32nd century.
Still hoping for a Voyager reunion show a la Picard
Agreed
I’m a Star Trek fan. So I will always support. I go back and watch the episodes I really like, and I mostly go back to non serialized episodes… so I am looking forward to this and videos like this help me keep that feeling going
Spoken like a TRUE Star Trek fan.
Hearing this news come from you makes it even better! My Thursdays start with Picard, The Ready Room, rewatch Picard then your recap show to close the day. Now life for my fav, Disco! Thanks my European brother!
I'm not 100% sure about the concept - Harve Bennett pitched this way back in the 80s and he was knocked back multiple times, the studio's argument being it'd be too limited in the storytelling (an argument I don't share so please don't attack me for writing this!).
I'll definitely give it a chance as I love the dynamic of Tilly and Admiral Vance and fingers crossed, it will centre on them.
Live long and prosper, everyone 🖖
I feel like DS9 proved that you didn't really need a "planet of the week" to do great Trek.
Academy field trips leading to adventures and new planet and anomalies ??
Hope S31 and evil Federation story arcs are minimized
@@Heru3005 - Exactly. Academy could be the Babylon 5 of Startrek - with all the difference races? it could be epic :D
Not necessarily the show I wanted, but hopefully it's good. Definitely will give it a chance.
Way back in 2005 the wife & me had a stay in Las Vegas, and you're darn right we did the Star Trek Experience. We did the behind the scenes tour and one of the guides/actors said that a Starfleet Academy show was in the works; I thought it this was adapted into Star Trek (2009). I look forward was to how this is executed.
I had the 'Starfleet Academy' game for my old MacIntosh. Always thought that would have made an awesome 'single ship' network game. It was way to complex to single player control all the functions... but breaking it out into the various systems it could have made an awesome Starship command simulator.
Hiya Sean! Loving the return of the beard 😊
I think its a great idea. Setting it in the future Discovery time frame allows it the latitude to try new things and not worry about retconning cannon.
Anyone else remember the pc Star Trek Starfleet Academy game? it even had some of the Original series cast reprise their roles. Had Kirk, Chekov, and Sulu in it. Think it came out in 97
It just shows that there is still hope for a Captain Worf series.
I'll give it a go but I just really didn't vibe with Discovery once it went to the future, it felt like I was watching it out of obligation because it was the only Trek and I'd already watched two seasons. Now that there are others, SNW, Lower Decks, hopefully Legacy, I don't need to watch Academy.
But hey, that's a good thing, give people variety to catch different markets and stop people getting oversaturated. Like with Prodigy if it turns out to not be for me, I'll just watch the Ups and Downs to learn the story.
Yeah, I didn't like the jump to the future either. I would have preferred a different timeline for this show.
I'm really excited for Starfleet Academy. The chance of Tilly returning is especially good news IMO. It was kinda sad that she left the Discovery and went on to become an instructor, I missed her cheerfulness in the last season of DSC.
I love Tilly, she has real heart! Hoping she and Adminral Vance return, their dynamic was great 🖖
Tilly is the least compelling character in the history of TV
@@rjScubaSki I can't find a reason to disagree with your view. Having her in it would diminish any smidge of interest I may have in this show to near zero.
@@rjScubaSkihow is she not? She’s saved her crew numerous times. Remember during the finale of season two when she had to make an emergency repair to discovery’s shields (while being fired at from control) so they were able to make it through the wormhole safely? What about when she saved the mycelium network from being destroyed? Don’t forget that she’s also the reason why Dr. Culvert was able to live again after being murdered. I can continue, if you persist on the notion that she is the least compelling character on the show.
@@rjScubaSki that's just blatant media illiteracy, then.
Definitely looking forward to this. Thank you.
One good thing about it being in the 32nd Century is that we avoid the issue where Trek intruduces a time period, then completely f*cks off and never goes back to it (looking at you, Kelvin Timeline)
Excited about this, especially with it being set in the 32nd century. It wasn't until they got there that I thought Disco really picked up and hit its stride.
Also, I don't know if you folks saw it, but I was skimming through Memory Alpha and there's an old press release from when Prodigy first aired that confirmed Paramount ordered a second season.
Yea it's my favorite because it's totally new, they get to write new material and not baby sit the old era again.
GD it. I want more *25th century* Trek 😔
Those of us that played Starfleet Academy on PC (1997) when we were younger will probably be all over this. I'm here for it. Although that game was set in the TOS movie era with monster maroons and all. 32nd century academy should be interesting!
As long as there is Trek we will get to see you talk about it, this makes me happy ❤❤
Noooooooo! They’ve promised Starfleet Academy so often during my fannish life, and it’s always been the concept I was most excited about. It’s been on and off the table so often I have permanent whiplash. I always imagined that it would have an exciting new crop of students and the possibility for all sorts of cameos. I love SNW and suffered through the first two seasons of Picard to be rewarded with the third, but I just couldn’t stomach any more Disco. Barely made it to the end of S2. With all the exciting time periods they could have played with, why oh why did it have to be this one? I thought Disco had its day and fans of the series got a good run. I’m devo to find out that Disco will poison the well yet again. I thought we’d turned a corner with Picard S3.
I believe Starfleet Academy can be a good addition for the franchise. Tawny Newsome being involved in this surely is great news, because not only she is fun and passionate, but she is also kind of a trekkie nerd - specially TNG era - so I believe she can bring a lot of fun for the episodes and be respectful with the original material.
Bring it on!
Yeah she's really cool - I'm British so it takes me time to warm up to Americans - too happy, don't they understand that everything is absolutely awful and it's probably going to rain later?
Yes, Looking Forward to Starfleet Academy. It should be awesome.
Its good to know they decided to develop 32nd century era more...instead of jumping dropping it after Disco ends. Now that United Earth has rejoin the Federation, they could have San Francisco again, but I have a feeling they picked this era to finally do Starfleet Academy show because it can be a mobile base or just have cadets crewing a starship like the USS Valiant. This will allow cadets to go on low risk missions that would lead to episodic content.
Good news. Such good news. Tilly was my favorite character from Discovery. When I found out that she was leaving and going off to the academy I was hoping that was because that they were going to be doing a spin-off series with her. This gives me hope that might be whats happening.
I hope they at least have some guest cameos from Tig Notaro please.
Hell yes!
Tilly is the saving grace of Discovery. Rest of the characters are too caught up with therapy sessions and Tilly is the only one who fully in tuned with her own issues and fighting to get past it with a semblance of effort. Everyone else just tell each other "it's ok, it's going to be ok..." Snooozzz
@@1914fallen That's completely up to Tig and her schedule .
Would Say that We Want Startrek Legacy instead Starfleet Academy...
Both
Why not having them both?
I'm way more intrigued than I thought I'd be. Willing to give it a chance.
Calling out some excellent timing in editing. Having the stock footage of all the ships exploding on the understated word "dirth" was brilliant
YESSSS!!!!! I am so happy!!! I hope they bring in some great writers. Its all about the writers. I hope it's also episodic.
Kurtzman is co-showrunner so....yeah, that's not going to happen
Yeah, no.
Remember how Voyager was about a starfleet crew stranded 70,000 light years away from Federation space? I think a new series should do a follow up series about the impact Janeway and her crew had on the delta quadrant, like maybe there’s a kind of Starfleet out there, though it’s called something else and so we could follow the adventures of a ship and crew that explores the Delta Quadrant, but the ship is populated by all the different races of beings that Voyager made first contact with. We can start with Captain Nelix who now has an eye patch and a peg leg and a sentient parrot. Might be kind of cool…
😂😂good jokes
you also have to remember that the Acadamy was at least mentioned and a big part of Kirks plot in 2 eps (that i remember), so, it goes all the way back is, Where No Man Has Gone Before, the 1st episode on air.
I have never been excited about a starfleet Academy show or movie since the Inception of it back in the 90s. they really have their work cut out for them doing it in the future as well. but I will watch it and I wish them the best of luck and I hope they prove me wrong
1:00 I’m excited about a Starfleet Academy show. I’ve always thought that would be a really interesting idea. I wanted to see the show center around Elnor. What are his struggles as the first Romulan cadet? Still, this is also a good era to explore.
Great,a concept nobody asked for,set in a distant future way after the Star Trek universe we all know and love, where a Child throwing a tantrum caused a Galaxy-altering event…thanks Sean.Shill all you want,I think I’ll give it a miss 🖖
okay props to the editor for using the burn ships explodeing as the clip when the word 'dearth' is said
When Starfleet Academy the video game came out years ago, William Shatner did video clips as Captain Kirk. His opening statement to the new class: "Space is boring."
Loved season 4 of DIS , I’m hoping species 10c becomes an ally of the federation and we see more of them. Maybe catch up with the Voth see how they’re doing in this time period. We’ll be able to see this new first generation of cadets help to rebuild the federation further, beyond what Michael and her crew did. Let’s goooo 🎉 🥂
I really have high hopes for this new Trek, lets hope its not just following one person through it over years but more of a group cast show
Love the idea! The future timeline works bc there’s so much history to draw upon. The cadets could be taught in their time by great events of the past, and there could be all sorts of time travel involved, also.
It could be like Gray’s Anatomy with character arcs and training or a present alien crisis drawing upon cadets suddenly commissioned bc they are up-to-date on the latest technological upgrades.
Lots of possibilities!
Tawny's involvement gives me hope. Being set in the timeframe doesn't thrill me but I will definitely give it a chance.
Oh, God. Not a Discovery extension, PLEASE GOD NO!!
I didn't really like the 32nd century jump in Discovery, so I'm not really interested. (I still hope it's good and people enjoy it!)
Yeah Discovery was such garbage that i don't even want to see that era anymore at all
When the 5th and final season of Discovery was announced in the trades last year, they stated the series wrap up would be cut back to 10 episodes instead of the customary 13. It made sense in light of all the major streamers having gone into cost cutting modes for their original content.
Love you, Seán. Thank you!
Don’t care what era any Star Trek is set. The stories are always decent, I’ve watched it all my life an hope it continues for another 40 years
Looking forward to it. Hope Tilly has a big role. I've missed her.
As I try to be with any announcements I'm cautiously optimistic. But really just have to wait and see how it will even be set up.
I remember them being thrown around many years ago. At one point the plot was supposed to center around a young Kirk in Starfleet Academy.
yay.. I like the Idea but not the setting. I dont know a previous Ensign as a Instructor? Sounds a bit strange. and after Disco I am really not intrested in seeing more of this future. Would be way more intrested if it would be set in the same Era as strange New worlds or Picard.
They better have a short term and long term plan, based on the quality of the writing..and not have Kurtzman involved. (Later) Ok. Oh dear. PS Assume it’s on P+ so at least I won’t have access to it
Ok, what is everyone's problem with Kurtzman? Didn't ANYONE here see that he worked on Transformers Prime? Widely considered to be one of the greated transformers shows ever?
@@jeremydale4548 it’s because he makes really shitty Star Trek
@@jeremydale4548 His Star Trek shows have been garbage, namely Discovery and the first two seasons of Picard. Matalas is doing a great job with the third season. Kurtzman is determined to destroy Star Trek and Paramount is letting him do it.
I've loved the idea of Starfleet Academy since Bennet first pitched it.
I wonder if certain actors who reprise their roles as holograms?
Like a certain MCPO who is arguable the best person in the history of Starfleet.
Sean in Star Fleet Academy, Absolutely! And yes, Tilly needs to be on the show. And I think having Star Trek for a younger audience is a good idea and opens things up for new-comer actors. And some excellent story-telling opportunities present themselves with a show like Starfleet Academy too. Setting it in the 32nd Century also means some really cool ships and gadgets can show up and voyages to places where No One Has Gone Before and maybe a few "Field Trips" to the past. Let's Go!!
Was really hoping the end of discovery would end the 32nd century and have it so the future isnt set. Not a fan of prequels and this show in 32nd century setting essentially makes all other trek shows a prequel.
I mean, I get why they're placing it in this century, yet I have absolutely zero interest in following up on the events of the recent Discovery seasons. Especially if it follows the same aesthetics. We're just getting Disco hallways everywhere aren't we?
I’ve wanted an Academy show forever, so this makes me happy. New seasons of Strange New Worlds/Lower Decks/Prodigy makes me happy. All we need now is that fourth Kelvin movie and I’ll be over the moon.
Sean as Boothby? I'm here for that.
I'm not as anti disco as some but tbh I was looking forward to saying goodbye to that whole situation
AAAAAAAAA NEW SHOW!!!!!
Discovery is my favourite trek and having a show in that timeline will be frigging awesome, can't wait
Still want a Titan spinoff with Shaw, the LaForge sisters, Seven, and Jack Crusher and maybe Data as the computer AI
Star Trek needs to forget Discovery continuity and continue DS9/Voyager/Next Gen timeline
Couldn’t agree more…
Was anybody really asking for a Starfleet Academy show set in the 32nd century starring Tilly? Sounds like this is just a sneaky way to bring Discovery back without having to give the cast new contracts. A cost cutting measure essentially.
They should open each episode with:
To Harve Bennett,
With love,
The Star Trek Family
It would be awesome to see a 32 century Boothby descendent. One that was down on his luck, tries and fails at the Academy but wants to still serve, so opts to be the new grounds keeper in honor of his ancestor.
I’m sooo excited 😆
It's DOA if Kurtzman is involved. Matalas is the only one who can save us.
News flash, Kurtzman is still involved in Picard season 3.
@@moviemaniacdjp He was? In which way?
@OrbinHD still credited as a creator and executive producer.
@@moviemaniacdjp Yes, because he was the creator and executive producer of the series. In S1 & S2. He wasn't involved in S3
@@OrbinHD nope, credited for all 30 episodes
Not that interested in this, still not bothered with Disco S4 and I have had Paramount+ since SNW, Give me more Titan based stuff, Season 3 of Picard is great
Would love a series set in 10 forward in a Cheers style
👍🏻👍🏻🖖🏼waiting for,Starfleet Academy
The 32nd century is ugly. The characters aren’t compelling. Imagine how good a starfleet academy show post Picard with guest stars like Riker, LaForge, Janeway, and a multitude of TNG/DS9/voyager cast and aliens we didn’t get in season 3 of Picard. This is a misstep.
No, it's not a brilliant idea. It's a terrible idea. It's the Flipping 32nd Century. No one gives a shit. If you want cameos, then the 25th Century is the obvious choice. But instead we're getting that really awkward one from Discovery who, like Barcley, I'm amazed graduated from Starfleet Academy. Ever since I saw Starfleet headquarters in DS9's Homefront/Paradise Lost and read the (granted, better than I expected) book Best and the Brightest, I have wanted to see a Starfleet Academy show. And they fudge it by setting it in la la land.
I wonder how much of the old Starfleet Academy video game will be included, I still have mine on a spare PC and play about with it once a year or so.
I am looking forward to it.
discovery was not my bag for startrek
Please, the LAST thing we need is a lame Young Adult series.🤦
What you need, is to let others enjoy whatever they want and stop auto hating ...
I'm with you on that one, Mike.
@@nekogami87 I don't give a shit if anyone enjoys it, I just know I won't.
@@nekogami87 stop auto defend mediocre shit.
@@MikefromTexas1 So it's the last thing _you_ need, not _we._ There's undoubtedly a lot of people out there who would find their way into the ST universe through a young adult series. If that's how it works out, watch the other series on offer.
Seàn, you're not a groundskeeper, you're Assistant Chief Engineer and don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Oh joy, more sitting around talking about our feelings for 2/3s of the episode.
The whole Discovery/ 32nd century setting is lame.
So? Why not let them try to make it not lame?
Its in the Discovery timeline :(
Truly, the worst timeline
TRASH
I think with the amount of Trek we get, a unique setting can work just fine. Not every show can (or should) go for the same formula at the same time. People were concerned about DS9’s setting and yet a lot of people love it now.
Can’t wait for the academy, been waiting for a while now😄 it has been “out there” for some time.
Great news can’t wait!
👎 boo... Paramount just needs to keep investing in strange new worlds, do a spin-off of Picard with seven of nine and a few other cast members, maybe the section 31 spin-off in the strange New world's timeline and invest in an amazing script for the next Kelvin verse movie and call it good.
Bad idea. I don't want that show.
Then dont watch it once it comes out and let other enjoy it
I am so absolutely hooked on Picard and so sad that it is coming to an end!!! It is so fantastic I dont know if anything else can hold up to it now!
urgh why do it in the nonsense fantasy Discovery future?
Just do it in old-school post-TNG time, there's more room for the characters that actually have character.
