There is one question I get asked more than any other and that is what do I recommend for flying while fat. While there are a lot of different airlines that are absolutely wonderful the only one I can personally recommend that has a committed program that’s been in place for 30+ years is Southwest due to their Customer of Size Program.
Flying as a plus size person is scary. I completely understand that. But it doesn’t have to be. Southwest makes it so much easier to avoid that embarrassment and make sure you have the space unique.

The only thing I really don't like is that if 2 people "of size" are traveling together, you either don't get what you pay for or you can't sit together. My wife and I are both large and Southwest has 3 seats on the left and 3 seats on the right. What I would love to be able to do is if the person you are traveling with is "of size" and or there is another "person of size" on the flight, they should give you the option of splitting the cost of the extra seat. One of you sits in the isle seat and the other sits in the window seat and you can both spread out into the middle seat. It really isn't that hard to do.

Really you only need to do it for one person because they’re refunding you the money after the trip. So you could do it for one person and have three seats with your partner.

My wife and I do this all the time....I book one of us with the extra seat and when boarding that person is allowed a travel companion, so we get to share the row

I haven't flown since 2010 when I was a smaller size, but I finally flew in 2023 and was so nervous. But I flew southwest and I was able to get the extra free seat on all 4 of my flights which was great. So my hubby & I were very comfortable

I had no idea about Southwests Customer of Size policy. This makes me more confident to fly.

Most Airlines don't have this policy but expect a plus sized passenger to pay for the extra seat to ensure that the plus sized passenger gets the two seats together and the Airlines aren't out of pocket . This is a reasonable solution for plus sized passenagers and it makes sure that the second seat can't be sold to another passenger .

I usually try to upgrade to business class especially on international flights.
Domestic if it’s not possible I have never had an issue with getting a second seat or having a seat left open next to me on any airline for the most part.

It sounds easy but it’s not!! Care to give some thoughts or tips?

I believe, the extra seat is only refunded it the flight is not full and your extra seat would have gone empty anyway. If the flight is full or over booked, no refund.

    • @JamesDabbagian

That's only for Alaska. Southwest refunds regardless of how many souls are on board.

@@JamesDabbagian I checked Southwest's policy and you are correct. To be honest, it seems wrong to refund the price of that extra seat if it could be filled with a paying (non-refunding) flyer. If anyone is going to be bumped off the flight, it should be the person that is asking to get something for nothing. IMO, if a person needs or wants 2 seats, they should have the option of buying 2 seats and get a refund only if that extra seat would have been unfilled anyway.

So even if someone else wants to buy your extra seat, you will still get your second seat and get a refund and Southwest loses money? Hmm. Southwest.

@@fattestedtravel sitting in a tight area confined to just in front of your seat sucks. Having the ability to sprawl your legs into the other seat regions would be more leg room. Having no neighbor allows this. I travel a lot and I never found it comfortable. I also find it extremely unfair that there's benefits for people who make poor life choices.

@@yankeecanuck4448 There're counless factors that can lead to obesity. Genetics, trauma, mental illness, personality disorders, disability, medications. Poverty, the worst food is given out to kids and people who need it because processed food is cheap. Also, you don't know where someone could be in the process of healing and losing weight. But sure keep blaming others for their "choices". Not the greedy airlines that have been shrinking the seats so they can cram more people on the plane for money. 🙄
