- On August 22nd, 2015, Norfolk Southern Corporation, in cooperation with the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad, operated the "Lehigh Gorge Special." An all day special steam excursion between Bethlehem and Pittston, Pennsylvania. Powering this excursion was Lima built Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire type #765. The engine put on a fantastic show of steam, as she traveled through the Lehigh Valley. In additon to #765, another steam locomotive was seen operating on this day. Reading Blue Mountain & Northern 4-6-2 light pacific #425 was operating between Jim Thorpe, and Old Penn Haven, hauling excursions for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. In this video, we will see both locomotives hauling passengers through the Lehigh Gorge, as well as a meet with both engines in Jim Thorpe. So sit back and enjoy steam railroading thundering across the mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania!
3:20........I literally have no words! that sound is MESMERIZING!
Thanks for posting this. This is the first time I saw the part where 425 switched to the siding to allow 426 to pull the train out of the station to clear the track for our arrival on Saturday (Aug 22)
It was very well organized to see 425 shuffling to the siding and very close behind 426 was switching to the track. They did that very fast. (425 was low on water as well)
When we were on the train the engineer had the choice between letting us meet 425 at another junction further along the line (like they ended up doing on Sunday) or meeting it in Jim Thorpe, he elected for Jim Thorpe and rightfully so, it was an epic meet up for two of the most impressive steam locos PA has seen.
I am so glad I got to ride that day, I felt like I was part of a historic event!
Thanks again!
One awesome video, I sure wish I had been there to smell the smoke and hear the roar. BRAVO!
Sometimes I wonder why the 425 and the 765 won’t do a double header or even better a triple header with the 113 also
That's a wonderful idea!!!! No doubt about it!
the tripplehead idea is gross
@fred gilmore I agree, I mean the 425 is a 4-6-2 pacific, 765 is a 2-8-4 Berkshire and the 113 is a 0-6-0 switcher, also where is CNJ 113? It’s been several years since that steam locomotive run with 425
@fred gilmore also if I can, there is this idea from me, if NKP 765 did return to RBM&N, it could be a perfect triple header for 765, 425 and reading 2101, but if that’s not a good idea it could be another idea if reading 2100 and 2101 be triple header with 425 but it’s only my idea you can say it’s not a good idea if you want just my opinion
2102 you mean
Winner of the whistle battle....
R&N 425. Yes, I prefer the PRR 3 Chime over the Nathan 6.
Don’t you mean CNJ 3 Chime?
Yeah thats a Central New Jersey Three-Chime!
you’re both wrong thats a crosby
Thought it will never happen again, but well done NS, RBM&N & FWRHS for making this possible!
Super video collection bro ♥️
Nice video, thank you for sharing.
It would be awesome if 765 comes back to the R&N and do a doubleheader with 425 one day.
EXCELENT....
Amazing video
Love this video!
What is it about trains that we love so much.
Very awesome video!
the whistle that the 425 has in this video; is that the same one that she had back when she was black?
11:08
The r&n smiling and saying hi
I was on this exact train, and rode in the St Augustine that day
Strong steam engine, enabled to pull 19 passenger coaches.
The Way They Had A Whistle Battle It Was Wild I’ll Say 425 Wins Better Whistle Sound And Fast as Lightning that’s why I Think 425 Wins
my question who won the battle between 765 and 425 me i think it was a tie i really watching both engines
425 won
actually I think it was 765 that one sounds like it has a more powerful whistle
I’d say 765
765 won
@@Wolfgodmak Well if 425 had her RDG 6 rather than that B&O 3 then maybe she would have had a better chance
Will NS still be in cooperation with the R&N Railroad in the future? With NS taking over the trackage part of the R&N last year, what does that mean then?
💙💙💙💙
Nickel plate road won
No reading and Northern won
SHT! I MISSED THAT
Was that a bad word
Epic video
It’s 765
